the big issue, imo, for the Kings and Anaheim to give up young potential stars is the alignment of their competitive window.
Paying Eichel max money now doesn't make a ton of sense if they don't have a competitive roster...If Bynam and Zegras are what most think they are, it would make more sense for them to stand pat and allow their development to scale up with their roster...
Eichel, seems like a guy for teams in the middle third to jump up into the top third of the standings.
I guess we'll have to find out where he lands

He's a little young for that.

If LA got Eichel, they would have 3 players over 10 million. Not an ideal way to distribute 81 million

This is my take too.
NRD on twitter has the players rumoured from the NYR and BUF as:
Wild: Rossi, Dumba, Kahkonen
NYR: Kravtsov, Chytil, Buchnevich, Schneider
He didn't say that it would includ all of those players, but those are the players being discussed as part of the package.
Personally I think Tkachuk would be a better starting point than any of those pieces. Makes me think either Buffalo isn't interested in his contract, or the Flames never offered him up.

If you want Johnny to go to UFA, make that offer to him. And duck.

Well that strategy isn't really working for Dubas since the Leafs have won exactly zero playoff rounds since signing all of those deals.

Yep playing against Matthews/Marner, Point/Kucherov/Stamkos, Barkov, Bergeron/Marchand and getting shut down by Danault just not enough of a challenge to get worked up about.
He would get the same challenge with Seattle or Vegas with a better chance of success.
This makes me think back to the idea a few years ago that top notch players wanted to play in Calgary because they might get some ice time with Iginla. Now they want a chance to play against McDavid.

The high ppg that he and Monahan have put together over the last 7 years has not translated to the Flames being a good to great team as it has for basically every other player in the top 30 with those kind of individual stats.
1 finish in the top 2 of their division and 1 playoff series win over 7 seasons is not the kind of results that you would expect from a top 10 player in the league.
----
On Philly, his most likely landing spot, Giroux, Couturier, Voracek, Hayes and JVR along with Provorov moves Gaudreau into a far more comfortable support position taking Konecny's spot as small skilled forward.
Philly's window is closing as Giroux, Voracek and JVR age out and take up too much cap space for their contribution.

Just Eichel
Unsatisfied just playing best on best vs any team on any given night, rather obsessed with avenging the draft snub where the guy who has 200 more points than him was picked first. Despite having the last laugh as that player was banished to NHL Siberia, Eichel is so obsessed he would follow him to the ends of the earth, and is seeking a posting in the nearest outpost

I am not sure how Gaudreau will age...my instinct would be...not well. I love what he can bring for the next 4 years...not sure thereafter. If we lose him...it will be bad for the team as he is an unparalleled player in terms of skill and point production on the team. If we keep him...it will be bad for the team because right when we would come out of a reload we will likely have Johnny as a PP specialist and not much else.
It sucks...I want to re-sign 24 year old Gaudreau now to 7 years...

probably for the better that it didn't happen in the end, but I was really pissed when we missed out on him. Liked him a lot as a player and would have loved to see him with Iggy.

I see Gaudreau being capable of maintaining his level of play (70 pts per season) for the next 5-6 years. It's not like he plays a physical game that will wear him down. A lot of game is his play making skills and that doesn't really deteriorate with age.
I'm not saying we sign him at any cost, but if you can sign to $8-8.5 for 7 or 8 years they probably should do it. The alternative is to trade him, but I don't think his trade value with one year left on his contract will be anything special.

I never really thought of McDavid as Eichel’s white whale.

Dreger on the Jay Onrait show last night was talking about how Treliving is one of the most active and creative GM’s out there.
If I take anything out of that I really think he is trying to work a 3 way trade where Tkachuk is sent to another team and futures from the flames and that other team are sent to Buffalo

I’d love to see a summer where we extend Johnny and acquire Eichel. Eichel-Lindholm as your 1-2 punch down the middle? That’d be somethin’.
