It really sounds from the Kraken like Gio isn't going anywhere. Good for them and good for him. All I know for sure is because he was the highest paid player the Kraken took Calgary does get a real benefit. Looking at Cap Friendly is kinda fun with all that cap space sloshing around.
If you budget 3-4.5 for the 4-6 bottom players you have to add you still have 15 mill or so to spend. Remember guys like Gaudreau already make 6 plus so resigning him for 7.5 -8 only costs another 1 -1.5 and they still have the rare ability to offer cap savings to teams in trouble on trades.
I'll miss Gio like everyone else but this could be a fun summer.

You certainly don't do it in the next few days just to get in ahead of his limited NTC.
If you do have to trade Gaudreau, history shows you can improve the return by shopping his expiring contract to contenders at the deadline. He's very unlikely to say, ‘Oh, I don't want to give up three or four whole months of my life playing for a team that has a good chance to win the Stanley Cup.’ The NTC is a non-factor at that point.
Are you familiar with the term ‘guddling’? It means catching fish out of a stream with your bare hands. People sometimes do it out of true desperation, if they're hungry enough and can't get their hands on a line or a fish hook. But it's a lot more effective to use a rod and reel and wait for the fish to bite, especially if you're in a hurry. It just requires patience, as scarce as that seems to be around here these days.
Some people think the Flames have a desperate need to get rid of Gaudreau before his NTC kicks in, and can't waste time waiting for a bite on the line. They want the team to guddle for a trade partner, no matter how bad the trade turns out to be. There's always a chance that the fish won't bite and you lose Gaudreau for nothing, but your expected return gets a lot worse if you just grab with both hands at a bad offer now.

Sorry but don’t agree with this. Saying Johnny’s nmc is a non factor at the deadline is false. I highly doubt he is going to agree to go to any of the 16 teams that make the playoffs . He might expand his list by a couple of teams but that’s probably about it. Johnny won’t care if flames are offered a better return from “team b” rather than “team a” . If he wants to go to “ team a” he can easily invoke his clause to make it happen. Plus if flames are in a playoff position and continue the “win now” mode , would they trade him? Flames can’t put themselves in a position to lose Johnny for nothing. For me it should be he re-signs by July 28th or he is traded. They can take longer when it comes to Tkachuk considering they still have him for next year , albeit at a high cap hit.

You highly doubt he would accept a trade to take a run at a SC before going UFA and playing wherever he wants? Why?

100 players have left teams to "play for a contender" and 98% of them still don't win anything. 32 teams and only 1 gets to win. Good luck leaving your team and picking the winner before the seasons out. Iggy picked Boston or Pittsburgh. How'd that work out?

This is irrelevant to the ridiculously confident take that Johnny will refuse to go to a playoff team… nonsense. Just guessing and nonsense for the sake of spewing nonsense.

If he hasnt agreed to an extension?
Yes you do.
I mean let's look at it pragmatically.
31 teams to negotiate with or maybe 9 or 10 who are both able to add at the deadline AND are looking for a LW...
Which scenario do you think will produce a bigger return?
People are hammering BT for asset management in every thread on this board virtually, and you think it's a better option to minimize the ability to extract assets from a trade partner instead of maximizing them? Why?
Everyone and their dog knows the core of this club needed a change and we saw that start yesterday, it has to go deeper than one defenseman though.
So either Monahan or Tkachuk or Lindholm or Backlund (all imo) have to follow to really see that change happen. It would be foolish to not start with the guy on the expiring deal (again unless the extension is agreed upon) as well as a guy that should garner the, arguably, biggest return.

Oops I kind of wrote it wrong. What I was trying to say that he will accept a trade but to think that he won’t invoke his nmc like jay random was insinuating is not correct. Johnny at deadline, if flames are not in playoffs , will be sought after by many many teams making playoffs . I’m sure a top contender would want him. But if they are offering less than say a bubble team that’s not Johnny’s problem. The NMC will be a factor. Jay random was saying it won’t be a factor

From Seravalli:

The question is: What’s next for Edmonton after Hyman? They have a hole to fill on the right side of their defense in the wake of Adam Larsson’s departure to Seattle. It’s certainly possible that Tyson Barrie returns to the Y-E-G after leading all defensemen in scoring last season.
But I’m wondering if the Oilers are a sneaky dark horse candidate for Dougie Hamilton. He makes so much sense. Not only can he produce similar to Barrie on the power play, but he would bring an even-strength dynamic to Edmonton’s blue line that the Oilers do not have.
If there is a will, there is a way to make it work cap-wise. The Oilers will almost surely be buying out the contract of James Neal in short order. There are rumblings of interest in Zack Kassian that could further increase cap space. Not entirely sold that Ethan Bear will be in Edmonton for the long haul. Further goaltending clarity, with Mike Smith closing in on a new two-year, $4 million deal, would help. The Oilers could also buyout Mikko Koskinen for $3 million in cap savings this season, going with an inexpensive Smith and Alex Stalock tandem for a total of $4.285 million (including Koskinen’s dead cap space hit).

It is 1 minute past the roster freeze ending. Why haven't they announced a plethora of trades? Get with the act, NHL!

I'm gonna need an inconsequential swap of AHL players to get me through the hour!

Do it!
Everyone hates us anyways.
Let's be the team that just wants to watch the NHL burn.

I've always been iffy on them targeting Eichel because of the cost to acquire him and that contract but man, this team needs a legit elite player. I wanna see Eichel battle McDavid in a BoA...

He’d help Carolina (and for all the whining about Gio leaving for no return, Carolina is probably regretting not making a deadline deal even though they won a round).

Kahun and Khaira won't get qualified by the Oilers per Holland.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1418259466382979077
Lose Larsson, go after after two defencemen who don't play defence. Makes total sense.
Holland also says they won't be big game hunting on the back-end. With that, millions of Oilers fans voices cried out in terror. No Hamilton for them.

Would Trelving be willing to move #12 for Buchnevich and Georgiev? Two pretty good pieces that could help right now. Provides some LW depth that if one was to be traded for other assets we aren't taking a major hit.

Wow, I would take Jar Jar in the middle on the bottom line if the price was right. He's always been on of very few Oilers I've always liked. Would be hilarious to see Pitlick and Jar Jar on the wrong side of the BOA.

I hope the plan for the 4th line centre spot is Adam Ruzicka or Glen Gawdin. Let them battle it out.
