I really hope they look at moving players instead of letting them walk away for nothing.
I'd take the cap space over Strome. People don't even want Monahan on this team but you'd take a crappier version of him and expose another forward?

Neat (?) factoid: if Gio stays with the Kraken and is named captain, that would be both expansion teams (Vegas and now Seattle) naming former Calgary Flames players as their franchise's first captain.

EDIT: As noted below, Engelland was never named captain for Vegas. He only welcomed every single damn player onto the team and gave a moving speech prior to their first game following the Vegas shooting. **** Vegas.

Engelland was never named captain, Stone is their first.

I have a feeling after this year we will be wishing we protected Gio and had Tanev's contract off the books going forward.

Just a gut feel. Hope I am wrong.

Why? Tanev had his best season ever last year and is another year old.

Played his first full season/not injured in a while.

Physical D rarely age well.

Having neither Tanev or Gio under contract after next year would be huge for flexibilty.

But as always Dino - A quality fly by

Also another year older - Gio. Also a physical D: Gio. And Gio had a decline the last two years.

Also a better offensive D - Gio
Also healthly for the last 5 years Gio
Also doesn't have 3 more years on their deal - Gio

I hope I am wrong, but I am fully prepard for the 43 game Tanev season followed by two more years as our #4/5 making 4.5 million.

Tanev is one of the best defensive Dmen I’ve seen. He’s not paid to be the offensive Dman. And he’s not overly physical - he played a position D. $4.5M for 3 more years? Good contract. Tell me how many years you would have signed him for.

BTW, Gio missed 10 games last year, 14% of the season.

I’ll play the what’s more likely game - That Tanev , after 5 season shortened by injuries , and being let walk by the Canucks discovered how to be a top 15 defensive D man in the league and stays healthy starting at age 31

Or - Tanev at 31 had a career year and returns to his normal 10 year career baseline which is solid 3/4 D and regresses as he hits his age 33 and 34 seasons after a career of injuries

I REALLY hope we get a similar Tanev as this past season for the next 3 years . It would be one of the biggest FA steals in the past few years if so.

However , i think there’s a big risk he’s more of a 3/4/5 D for the duration of his contract then a 1/2 defensive star

Some player quotes by Ryan Leslie on Twitter

Quote:
Take away his Norris. His points. For me it’s his work. Undrafted. Not sure he gets enough appreciation. People forget what it took for him to get to this point.
-Lucic

Quote:
His importance is never underestimated. Recalls never been in a quiet room after a win when he tore his biceps in NJ. rallied around him to make playoffs. Knew how hard it was for him
-Stajan

Quote:
Treated me like a teammate for 10+ years. Kid from college. Great guy to me. You look up to him. He’s serious in The weight room. Making guys laugh.Does it the right way. So much respect.
-Gaudreau

Quote:
Coming to cgy I hadn’t had one guy to look up to. Leads. Hardest worker I’ve ever seen. Learned so much. Losing him stings. Grateful to play with him. Wouldn’t be the same player without having him as my captain. Biggest beauty. Just a legend.
-Hanifin

Quote:
Watched him become a leader. Gonna Miss a good friend. One of the best people in the game. Ultimate pro. Like a brother. Ups. Downs. Tough days. 1000 game almost.
-Mark DePasquale - Flames Equipment Manage on Gio

Quote:
One my best friends. Seeing him today at the gym. Weird. Played with him for 8 years. Dinner every road trip. See him every day in summer and season. Hard to replace. Gonna miss him. One of the best D man in the league. He’s our captain. He does it all
-Monahan

I just woke up. Two years ago, Gio and Brodie was the top pairing in the whole league.

Did Treliving managed to lose both for nothing?

He sure did.

He’s a bottom tier GM. Listening to him on the Fan right now, I just have no time for him anymore. Blundering buffoon of a GM, and the year to year results and poor outlook of the team going forward speaks to that.

“Our plan is to move forward”…yeah, sure chief.
