This is the discussion though. Treliving is a bad GM who has consistently incorrectly assessed his team to the detriment of the team’s present and future.

So they gain 6.75 mill in cap space, let’s see how that is used before worrying about what they would have gotten from New York for Gio… which likely isn’t the same because then NYR would have had to protect him

I mentioned this previously but it seems more appropriate now since it might come to fruition soon, but it's my opinion that if Bennett was kept and exposed in the expansion draft, he would have certainly been Seattle's choice, thereby protecting Giordano from being picked. Feel free to disagree of course.
Having said that, if the trade return from the Rangers is more than 2nd rounder and mid-tier prospect, then the asset management here needs to be reviewed.
Again, that assumes Seattle would have picked Bennett, and there is no way to prove that, but I believe is certainly would have happened.

Can't quote ComixZone but for me it comes down to the Flames weren't going to throw in the towel and be big sellers at the deadline when they were still in the playoff picture. It is pretty clear that the owners aren't into as rebuild. I'm not even a huge Tre booster but I am not expecting a rebuild, so hoping for a retool.

Keep in mind if we traded Gio at the deadline, that's possibly another asset we have to worry about protecting in the expansion draft

Exactly, I have a feeling this could be setting up a big trade or acquisition come draft day or free agency.

Or it could be the harbinger of an extinction level event for the GM.

Were any posters here advocating for a Gio move last deadline?
For all we know ownership told Treliving he needed to push for the playoffs?
Francis may have told Treliving back then he wasn’t interested in Gio or the price to protect him was less. Gio has a pretty nice bounce back after Sutter comes on board and that could change things?
Your assumption could be right and he has no idea what he is doing but I feel like he is facing several roadblocks we are not privy to.
Treliving is on his final straw with me and how he navigates the next 2 weeks will put me firmly in one camp or the other.
If anything the rebuild crowd should be very excited the team did not spend futures to keep their best Dman today or protect Gio over guys who are younger but worse today.

I think most deadline returns are either picks or exempt players

As someone in camp rebuild, it’s a good sign. With all due respect to Gio, the Flames best Dman title is and was Hanifin IMO.

This pretty much solidifies Hanifin and Tanev getting a LOT more ice time. I think that is the only way we’re going to really see if Hanifin has what it takes to become the #1D he has the potential to be.

Both are division rivals.
What I would have liked to have seen was Treliving manage proactively for once and not have had it get to this spot. We lost (arguably) the best player in the expansion draft and we’re not even a playoff team. That’s just bad management, and it should get called out. It’s why this team has had zero success.
|
But isn't his non protection due to a free agent signing that turned out better than even the most positive fan on this site would have imagined?
Isn't that adding a good asset?
If Tanev wasn't signed, or didn't play well, the 38 year old captain would have been protected.
Is that a better universe?
