Gio's NTC was relatively weak. Had to list 19 teams he can be traded to - so over half the league would have been in play. I doubt NYR is ever on such a list.

Because it was on the table that the Rangers or any other team would have wanted to use a protection slot on Gio or make a side deal so that Seattle wouldn't take Gio?

If they would have traded him last week, the Rangers would have needed to expose one of these guys (unless they left Gio exposed).

Why? Unless the deal is all futures, pre-expansion draft any decent player coming back would either have to be exposed or would bump a current player into exposure.

And the same applies to NYR - they'd have to expose a D.

The Rangers used one of their defenceman protection slots on Libor Hajek, a 23-year-old tweener who hasn't come close to living up to expectations.

I think they could've protected Giordano.
