There was plenty of talk last year that Laine's "addiction" isn't so much an addiction anymore. I think people are hung up on old news. Also, Torts was just a terrible coach overall this year and CBJ is evidently a disaster to play for as an org (evidenced by the long line out.) Laine's play this season should be discounted, and no need to concern with any attitude question out of CBJ given the apparent state of the club.

I dont think there was an excuse. He recognized that in Winnipeg he was gaming too much in interviews, but I dont think he's ever said why. but we're talking about a 20-22 year old kid moving to a different continent to play pro hockey, largely alone, and evidently with some personality conflicts with the roster he was on and team leadership (posted a link to that story earlier.) This is the same organization that had notable issues with Evander Kane too (say what you will about the player and person, but there was obviously some red flags about the org in this situation too.)
IMO it is pretty obvious why he turned to gaming. He was looking for connection that he wasn't feeling to people in Winnipeg. The same thing happened to countryman Puljujarvi in Edmonton, and he actually needed to go back to finland to reset from it.
It's interesting too, many finnish and Russian players don't come over to the league right after they're drafted. It's probably because there is a larger culture/language shock to moving to NA along with the lack of ability to move a support network from home here easily.
Laine is 23... Lots of time to grow up and learn as an adult and professional. What you can't teach or learn is Laine's size and innate talent for hammering a puck.

I'm typically on the "stay away from Laine" train but man...imagine him peaking as a Flame and actually not being a complete disaster defensively....drool

Calgary also has an abundance of Scandinavians right now. Perhaps Laine would feel more comfortable here and get back on the development train rather than languishing.

It's hard to trade for elite talent that doesn't have some question marks attached to it.

If Columbus asked for 12th OA (and maybe another minor plus) for Laine do you do it? There will be warts regardless of either acquiring him or making the pick.

I see LA paying the 8th pick if that is all it cost. I would do that trade from the Flames standpoint for sure

Laine has held back everyone line he's been on the last couple years. All he is now is a trigger man. It's probably unreasonable to expect him to turn it around at this point.
I don't think will is the question anymore. It's ability. All he has is his shot.
I wouldn't trade our 12th pick for him.

Laine is interesting. He's one of the best goal scorers in the last 5 years, but his assists are pretty dismal for a guy with his goal production. He's one-note, but it's also the most important note in the game.
His closest comparable is Mike Hoffman over that span of time.
He's 23, so I would think his peak is yet to come. Though he feels very much like a Phil Kessel type with more goal scoring and less assists. I'm not sure he's a first liner on a contender, but closer to a second liner and first line PP specialist.
I don't think he has that star quality in him. But still worth having on your team, for sure, so long as you have a couple guys to set him up and cover some of his defensive responsibilities.

That’s actually a good question. My head says that you do that trade. But I would still be nervous about who that pick becomes. I think the team would have to have access to speak to Laine to have a frank discussion with him before the trade. If there is any doubt from him about how much he wants to play in Calgary or play for Sutter, then I think you pass. I feel like with the right team and city, laine will be back on pace to being a superstar. If he keeps playing on teams and in places that he didn’t like, he’ll never reach that potential. I think he needs a team in Florida or LA.

I'm pretty convinced the Flames are going to go hard after Seth Jones. They have resigned themselves to losing Giordano because they have a plan B. And Treliving's biggest moves have always been for D-men

Jones has not been good recently.
Instead, we'll go after somebody who has not been good for a while: OEL.

Jones has been quoted or it is heavily rumored he doesn’t want to play in Canada and if the Flames are replacing a top 4 it would make more sense to see them go after a left shot with Tanev and Andersson in the top 4 on the right

Yeah, my bet is OEL by trade or Edler via free agency for a top 4 LHD replacement if Gio is taken.
I worry about the Flames O from the D next year. It was a huge weakness last season and losing Gio isn't going to help that. Need Hanifin, Andersson and Valimaki to step up big time if an adequate offensive D isn't added.
I still hope for a Martinez signing, maybe he loved playing for Sutter, but there is also the possibility he did not like Sutter lol

Anybody who doesn’t see this as an absolute no brainer is now on my list of untrustworthy hockey opinions.

Well, I'd think Columbus would want someone to replace Jones, so it could be Andersson going back for Jones

No sense trading for Jones if he only has a year left on his deal and reportedly doesn't want to play in Canada.

An unsigned RFA with two years left until he's UFA and a 7.5M qualifying offer? For a player not particular known for his leadership or effort, and played at a sub 40 point pace for half a season with Columbus most recently.
I do it, but I can see why people wouldn't want to.

The last thing this team needs is another one-dimensional star forward.
