I do not know if I see it that way. A third has a very low probability of amounting to anything.

I agree. I’m sure there will be a couple but nowhere near the haul Vegas got.

I don't have current data handy, but Michael Schuckers's analysis of draft pick values suggests that the average 3rd-round pick plays about 140 NHL games. That's more than you're going to get out of Giordano in the last year of his contract, though admittedly the quality of Giordano's play will probably be higher than the average third-rounder's.

Add in the fact that you are losing another player anyway, and that price may not be the no-brainer than some people think.

Agreed - would easily give up a third rd pick to keep Gio for a year. First and third is too much though. Hopefully Treliving stands his ground.

I’d be fine with it.

Now I don’t pretend to know how NHL GM’s work with each other, but asking for a 1st and third and settling on a third might not be a good way to negotiate. Going to be real hard for people to take you seriously in the future.

I assume that Seattle is real interested in having Gio play for them.

BTW thoughts on where the rumor of 1st and third is coming from? Flames, Seattle or Gio’s agent who may be in the loop as a courtesy.

There is some risk to Seattle too.

Gio could injure himself during the season and become untradable at the deadline and become a lost asset for them. I’m sure this is what would happen if the Flames kept Gio.

The safest pick is Kylington.

Jeff Marek first reported it and was corroborated by Friedman.

It’s almost like Marek and Friedman spend lots of time together or something.

Drunk Uncle’s analysis shows that a third rounder has a >95% chance of not being a top 6 forward of top 4 D

Just wondering which organization is their source. We do seem to hear a lot about the Flames potential moves.

It would actually be hilarious to see Brodano 2.0 in Toronto...

GMBT "Are you taking Tarasenko from the Blues?"
GMRF "Possibly"
GMBT "Would you be looking to flip him if you do?"
GMRF "Possibly"
GMBT "What kind of offers are you getting in that scenario?"
GMRF "We've talked to a couple teams about that, there are concerns about his injuries but we've been offered X, Y, Z"
GMBT "Well, we'd be interested in him, if you agree to leave Gio we would beat those other offers substantially"

I wonder if a scenario like that could play out? Not that I'd want to overpay for Tarasenko, or to keep Gio, but if they want to keep Gio maybe that type of scenario could be a way to do it and add another piece up front that might help the "win now" mantra they most certainly have in place with the hiring of Sutter.

They would have either made a trade like COL-NJD, or simply exposed Gio and Tanev instead of Valimaki.

Yes. But one of five 3rd rd picks have a decent chance of panning out. You might even find a Norris winner or back-to-back Conn Smythe runner-up. At some point you have to stop pissing those picks away (or better yet just don't start pissing until you're a contender).

Flames trade Monahan and a 3rd to Seattle for Eberle and the agreement they will select Kylington in the expansion draft.

That is someone the type of deal I could see the Flames making that protects Gio. Not a straight up futures trade but a hockey deal that has a condition that Gio is protected.

Toronto is one team that Gio would want to go to.

Please no!!

If they trade monahan and the best asset coming back is a 38 year old dman I will puke. Don’t care if that guy is Gio.
