Monahan is coming back from surgery and has minimal goodwill left from his play prior to 2019-20
A top line of Mangiapane Backlund and Lindholm is not that bad.
Somehow the pieces as they leave have to be turned into guys that play hard and fast and GAF

Monahan you can't deal. Giordano is gone.
The team and most media are shooting down the Tkachuk stuff, so maybe that goes quiet. Have to think they know what he's thinking contract wise when this one is up or they'll deal him.
The really interesting one now is Gaudreau.
Without Giordano the team isn't as good. They have cap space, but maybe they see it as a step back year and moving Gaudreau prior to his NTC makes more sense.
Either way they have to get the expansion draft out of the way, and then things get interesting this weekend.

I agree with you, and I am not saying the Flames can go spend $12M on a player. I said that it gives the team options. Those options were lacking over the last couple off-seasons. For example you had to sign Mangiapane to a bridge deal, even though both player and team preferred a longer term deal *. I am hoping that with some savvy trades/signings we might get an exciting team this season. I gave up on rebuilding since that doesn't seem likely.
*That is my take because in one interview I remember Mangiapane saying they couldn't do a longer term because of the cap.

Thanks for your work here Gio but it's time to move on.
Just a quick question. I know that these are extenuating circumstances, but am I wrong in thinking that I've never seen a GM lose so many players for nothing?
Hamonic, Brodey, now Gio. Have their been other lost Assets that we could have gotten something for, or am I just biased?

I will stop supporting the Flames if we sign/trade for him.

Yes, I wasn't aware of that. I try to stay out of the players personal lives because I find player images to be a product of PR teams. As for him being racist, that's not something I can excuse. Here's where I hope that it only comes from a lack of education. I don't know the story, but people deserve second chances. I don't know if he had second chances, but again I don't really follow the players outside of hockey. Anyways, if you're certain there's no redemption for the guy, then I don't want him here either.

At the deadline Hamonic was injured and then had a low dollar contract as a UFA in the following off-season. I don't understand why many Flames universally seem to think that he was ineffective while also thinking there was a missed opportunity to recoup value (again particularly since he was injured)
Brodie is a different situation. One could argue they should have traded him but they were in the playoffs and that wasn't going to happen.
This team has been terrible managing it's asset base overall - trading players too late or not at all and not getting enough value out of them. But it also comes down to the strategy central to it all - to compete.
Teams lose good players. They key is having a pipeline coming along to replace them. And then using the cap space gained effectively.

I never thought we’d see Gio in Calgary again after he went to Russia.
Happy I was wrong.
The man should have two Norrises, has one, and a Muhammed Ali humanitarian award.
We were lucky to have him his whole career.

This is the pit you fall into when constantly chasing the fantasy of "just get in and anything can happen." Hardly anything new for this franchise.
Management falls in love with their own players and holds onto them for way, WAY too long. The cycle of mediocrity continues, the team shows up on more and more NTCs around the league, stars force their way out, and you're eventually painted into a corner of having no valuable assets left and forced to rebuild anyway. It just takes way longer and you're starting with far less to work with.

Still think Treliving buckles and sends a 3rd to Seattle for them to pick Kylington.

It’s not that unusual to see players play out their contracts. When they’ve been totally out of it, Treliving has gotten something for expiring contracts. Even his supporters on here though aren’t promoting his great asset management. This team is always chasing it seems so can’t afford to give up presnt assets for future benefit.

It sounds to me like Seattle is asking for way more than that (1st+). Eventually I expect the price to come down to something like one or two second rounders. And the scary thing is that I could see Treliving buckling anyway. Asset management is not his strong suit.

I would view that as pretty good value and be more than fine with it.
If anything that would be Seattle blinking to me.
I'll go further and predict it's a 3rd+Matthew Phillips for them to pick Kylington.

Why would a 3rd change Seattle's mind?
Would you trade Giordano for another team's "Kylington" and a third?

If he can get it done for only a third, I agree. Will Seattle drop their price that low?

Not likely as he has more value to the Kraken with his leadership, play, as well as the fact they will probably be able to fetch a better return for him at the trade deadline if they want to go that route.

Depends how they value the cap space and if not taking Gio allows them to take someone else they otherwise wouldn't.
For instance if they take Price does that lower the chance they take Gio?
I admit it's a long shot though. I would peg the chances he goes to Seattle at 80%+ at this stage

I feel like if that's all it took it would be done by now.
Sounds like Seattle wants a 1st and you can't blame them. Gio is very good and could likely be flipped for a 1st+ at the deadline.

Asking and getting are two very different things. I really don't see them taking a 38 year old with a $6.75M contract hit and then hoping he plays well enough to extract a draft pick out of him at the TDL. That is very risky given the player's age, not just from a talent drop off perspective, but also considering injuries and wear and tear on the body. Take the third, take the young player, and call it a win because you can spend that money elsewhere. Seriously, if you can take that $6M advantage and turn that into a Dougie Hamilton or a Gabriel Landeskog, AND you got a prospect and a pick for doing so, you're better off. I think Francis is a smart guy and will go this route. He's bluffing the Flames to get a pick out of them just like he is with Montreal and Price.

Not saying that it should have happened, but to be fair, other GMs trade for ineffective players all the time. Sometimes they're blinded by a player's rep and sometimes they think a change of scenery will do well, and sometimes they even think the player is actually effective in the right situations.
