I think that Johnny Gaudreau should be given consideration for Captain if the Flames lose Mark Giordano.
He should be given an A at least especially if the Flames re-sign him, he is one of the top scorers on the team.
I actually thought he matured quite a bit last year, seemed leaner and a bit quicker and stronger.
I would think the A's should have an element of who the best player is on the ice and even fan favorite and not just who the best guys are in the room.
Theo was Captain and he was a smaller player, a bit different but still.

If Tkachuk got the C though, could that possibly help to be a catalyst and elevate his game?
He is well spoken and appears to be motivated by opportunity. I know the tough year will deter many, but he's had his share of adversity and challenges, and maybe it would give him the sense of pride he needs to go out there with maximum swagger and do his thing.

Zero concept of development.
Your captain isn't necessarily supposed to be your best player either. Looch has those leadership intangibles in spades and has won before, and has been probably a top 3 performer in the playoffs for us, despite being over the hump.
I wouldn't mind him, Backlund (though ideally a couple years ago), Tanev or maybe Lindholm.
Mangiapane or Dube in a few years will be excellent candidates though I think.
|
I could see Lindholm.
"Captain Zebulon" has a nice ring to it.

This is true. However, the “tone it down” statement was never a verbatim quote either. It is, however, probably an honest take from some players who didn’t want to be in a big after whistle scrum every single time Tkachuk decided to be a dick to the goalie or felt some perceived slight by another player.
ETA: I don’t even think tone it down is that bad - it’s akin to “pick your spots” - cause a commotion when it makes sense, not every time.

I agree. He's the type of player that they Flames should build around plus hes signed for 3 more years too.
Lindholm (C) - Lucic (A) - Backlund (A) - Tanev (A) - Tkachuk (A) is the leadership group I'd like to see.

3 years is the perfect stop gap to a Mangiapane/Dube captaincy.

That's funny. Dube isn't that good. Bottom six at best.

Dube is also in the toddler stage of his NHL career.
His ceiling will become much more clear after this season. Weird year for him last year with the Sutter dynamic, but he had flashes of awesome tenacity and skill.

The Valimaki injury really... "helped?" It's rose-coloured glasses for sure but I think if he was available Seattle would take him without a second thought. Fells bad to say a guy suffering from a horrible year-long injury "helps" our team though heh

Dube could be anywhere from a good top 6 player or not.
He’s certainly an NHL player.
My bet is he takes a decent step this year.

I think Dube is a classic "middle 6" and tops out in that area.

I could see a Backlund-esque career out of him. 2nd line guy, constant arguments about whether he’s actually a 3rd line guy.
I think he’ll be solid.

The thing about Dube that sticks out is his drive. Kid drives the net (and with finish) like your classic middle six player won't often do. He appears to have an extra gear that could be exploited under the right coaches/leadership.
Labelling him this early as ordinary might be short sighted. I have a feeling about him.

Call me old school, but I think the captain status should be earned.
You shouldn't get it to motivate you, that is not the quality of a captain I want. Needing the C for the extra motivation Doesn't scream "give it up for the team"
Lucic should be a run away.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but this is how I feel about Mangiapane as well. Classic Mason Raymond type player where he can pitch hit on the second line if needed, and might even put up some okay numbers here and there while doing so, but if he’s a regular in your top 6 you’ve got a weak team.

Dube may be middle 6, which is also within the top six. But he’s also worn a C wherever he’s played except the AHL.
Also middle 6: Peplinski, when Calgary won.

That was a rookie establishing himself and Doughty sold that so badly. He didn’t miss any time and didn't even get a concussion. It was a dive worthy of a Canuck.
You want to talk about antics, Doughty is no choir boy.
