I'd prefer Backlund as captain personally compared to the alternatives

hmmm interesting choice, and actually a pretty good one.
All the players respect Lucic and he definitely plays with some GAF even though he's not the player he was in Boston... and I think Sutter and him have a great relationship

I think it'll be Lucic as well.
He's already the defacto leader in the room, teammates look up to him and has the respect of coaches.

One of the only Flames who elevated his play this year in games where there was a setback, instead of crumbling.
Frankly Chuckie seems to let the opposition into his head too much to be captain.
BTW, while I would not give him the C right now, “no show” Monahan is .7 PPG in the POs. Tkachuk is .333. Johnny is .6333. Lindholm is .5333. Mangiapane is .4 (but his role was more limited at the time). Dube is .5.

An added dig to the Oilers fans (as Neal is bought out this summer)

The only one I really see who displays captain like qualities is Tanev, but his tenure with the Flames being so short I don’t imagine he gets the selection, but he would be my choice.

Give the captaincy to Gaudreau. Force the refs to have to talk to him whenever they're not going to call all the slashing and hooking he takes and watch him go to 100 points.

I don't think it's clear at all what the Kraken will or won't do. Obviously an argument could be made that Gio would be an asset, a stable, able veteran on a brand new team. But if they feel that role is filled by other players, then I can also see Gio being a hard pass for the Kraken, a aging rental is no way to build a team foundation.
My gut is that Gio is a Flame next year.
We'll see.

I think it would be Lindholm. I think Sutter is a huge fan of his and he plays the game the right way.

I think you may be on to something. I said a while ago that the only two roster players I would be reluctant to trade are Lindholm and Tanev, because they do all the little things right and would be great role models for a bunch of new players coming in.

In terms of leadership and the captaincy, no player comes to the defense of his teammates more than Tkachuk and no player has as little support from his teammates as Tkachuk. Take that for what you will.
As for Tkachuk in the playoffs, his first taste was against a big tough Ducks team. Rookie season, I'll give him a pass.
3 points in 5 games against Colorado is not bad. He was also very physical in that series and involved.
2 points in 6 games last playoffs but hard to say he wasn't impactful before his injury. His physical play led to Schiefle's injury and as we've seen, that Jets team can't win in the playoffs without Schiefle. Flames maybe don't beat the Jets without that series of events.
He might not have put up points, but Tkachuk is very impactful and engaged in the playoffs. It's still a very small sample size for him.

Except we don't know...media also said Hamilton was an outcast because he went to museums...turned out to be a lie
"not really" when asked if he liked museums

Can't the assistants do that as well? I remember him going on a tear with the A.

I’m obviously in the minority, but I’m pretty disappointed that the Flames left Gio exposed as losing him does not make the Flames better. Although he could still be a Flame depending on what Tre and Francis work out. But I also understand the cost was insanely prohibitive. I mean giving up the 12th overall pick + a 3rd rounder just to have one more season of Gio at $6.75M? Just an unfathomable price tag. If the Flames can’t find a way to keep Gio, I do hope at the very least, the Flames can find a way to re-sign Gio for cheap next season. He moved his family to Calgary and has fully established himself within the community.
I won’t lie though, seeing Ryan Suter’s name added on to the UFA market has piqued my interest. Theoretically, without Gio’s contract, the Flames will have now freed up almost $7M and can use a portion of that to lure a top defenseman. A top 4 of Tanev-Hanifin & Suter-Andersson could actually be very formidable top 4.
A question i do have in all of this though is, did Treliving even attempt to trade Gio himself to gain any assets just to give a big F U to Ron Francis? I mean, if Francis just ends up flipping Gio to a contender anyway, why couldn’t the Flames do that themselves? Unless Treliving already canvassed the entire league and realized that there wasn’t much interest in a soon to be 38 year old defenseman. So maybe it would be in the best interest for Ron Francis to just take a couple of mediocre draft picks and take Kylington rather than selecting Gio and finding out for himself that the rest of the league isn’t all that interested in Gio. Very interesting circumstances these GMs are finding themselves in, should be a dramatic couple of weeks here.

I could certainly see them going with all "A"s until Tkachuk (or someone else) is deemed ready to wear the "C".
If they do name a captain for next season, I think it will be either Backlund or Lucic.
If they go with all "A"s, I could see the group being Backlund, Lucic, Monahan, Tkachuk, and Tanev (assuming they're all back next season).

This sucks, but it is the best decision that could have been made out of a bunch of crappy options.
I just hope it doesn't mean they made a side deal with Seattle to not select him. I am still not convinced 100% that they would select him, but it seems like most people are convinced they will, so it's likely I'm wrong.
If he does get picked, Backlund will be name captain IMO. Sutter has always been a big fan of his. Short of signing Landeskog, which is a pipe dream.
