With guys like Tarasenko, Duchene and Domi being exposed they have to be careful. I imagine they’ll want to talk to players like Hamilton and Landeskog during UFA

Duh!
Winning is the result of many things including managing your cap well.

If it’s valuable to one team it’s valuable to all teams.
Therefore, it needs to be treated as a commodity and spent wisely.

I guess what I’m saying is you can do the wrong thing too by not using cap space properly either, if that wasn’t obvious enough in my post. I think specifically Francis could have made out like a prospect bandit here by taking on salary and acquiring a pile of picks and higher end prospects- like Vegas did, which propelled them to turn said prospects into star players and become one of the best teams in the NHL.
But as Jayrandom said recently, we don’t know that they haven’t done that yet I guess. We’ll see. But getting greedy and digging in- not making trades so you can say you have cap space to go likely blow on a (probable) ####ty UFA deal? Dumb, not the play I would have made, and I wonder if that’s coming.

I don’t think as many GMs are caught with their pants down like at the Vegas expansion. Going through the lists, I can’t put together a team anywhere near as good as Vegas did.

Maybe not the same depth but more top/high end talent.

If you look at the actual Vegas picks, the team was not that good.
It was from all the side deals they did.

Like? Aside from UFAs, is Duchene the best forward under contract they can get and I’m not even sure he ends up exposed yet?

That’s also part of what I mean. I don’t see too many teams with much worry about losing a really good player, needing to make those side deals with an even better player like Minnesota and Florida stupidly did.

Voracek Duchene Tarasenko
Giordano
Price
Vegas top guy they took was James Neal. Other players stepped up and turned into good players, as well as all the assets and picks they received allowed them to go out and trade for players, but those names I’d say are bigger than James Neal.

They were able to draft Fleury, Karlsson, Marchessault, Perron, McNabb, Schmidt and Haula. They were gifted Tuch to take Haula, Reilly to take Marchessault, Theodore to take Stoner, NYI 1st to take Berube, WPG 1st to take Thorburn, and Gusev. They made out like bandits. I don’t see similar happening this time based on the protection lists I can put together.
Aging Voracek, passed around Duchene, rebuilt Tarasenko, aging 1 year Giordano and a potentially post apex goalie is fine but not great. All of those have significant cap hits too.

If it’s a fantasy, then it’s one shared by most NHL GMs and coaches. The deals that brought in Coleman and Goodrow are widely credited with pushing the Lightning over the top. Teams routinely look for players in that mould at the trade deadline. Thomas Tatar is easily one of the top six most skilled forwards on the Habs roster, and he was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs. Intensity level and a willingness to fight through physical intimidation is highly valued in this league.

Toronto going 4-4-1, TB going 4-4-1 and Max Domi could help give them better forwards if Seattle’s not getting side deals. Also, they could pick UFA Landeskog and then negotiate.

I think they take Gio and sign Hamilton and take Price. They'll take the best possible players and try to compete and if it does t work they can sell sell sell and start building with more assets.

The career stats for most of those guys before they joined Vegas were unimpressive. Karlsson’s career high was 25 pts. Haula’s career high was 32 pts and he was coming off a 28 pt season. Schmidt had a career high of 17 pts. Smith had a career high of 50 pts, but he was coming off a 37 pt season. Tuch was a highly regarded prospect, but hardly a blue-chipper. Perron was an aging and oft-injured reclamation project who had only put up more than 22 pts once in the previous 5 seasons.
Go back and read the media and fan responses to their draft. Other than some appreciative comments about Marchessault, the consensus was that forward group wasn’t impressive at all and would struggle mightily to score goals.
The remarkable thing about the Knights wasn’t that they were able to draft a powerhouse roster. But that a collection of 3rd line players exploded to blow past previous production once given more opportunity.

I wonder what the chances of Phillips being claimed are. He probably has the highest ceiling out of anyone the Flames are exposing.
And Gio does have his trade control, age, and cap hit.
I think Matthew Phillips just straight up has more value than Kylington at this point.

No, the remarkable thing was how they managed to get 2 or 3 assets from 10 teams, when everyone only owed them 1.
