I just wonder if the Leafs are having those discussions right now with Seattle and Price. They need a goalie badly and you can’t do better than Price.
This is the type of move that would add so much to the history of the Leafs-Habs rivalry.

4 players with cap hits over 10 million? Pretty unlikely

I don’t know.
From the perspective of having a big name to market the team to Seattle and be a community ambassador is there a better player than Price for Seattle?
Grew up in the Pacific Northwest, played his Junior hockey in Washington, his wife’s from the area, and he’s still regarded as one of the best goalies in the NHL (even if the regular season numbers don’t back it up).
Plus goalies are weird. People thought Fleury wasn’t worth $5.75M anymore when Vegas took him, but he bounced back and actually earned a raise on his next contract. I’m not sold Price isn’t still elite.
Seattle can keep their cap flexibility in other ways. I’d take Price and he instantly becomes the franchise player and somebody the Kraken can easily make the face of the franchise.
Francis might not want to take him, but I can see Seattle ownership wanting to.

Either the difference between those numbers is a lot more than $3 million, or I've forgotten how to math.
And there is something to be said for building a team that doesn't need to be carried on anyone's back.
|
I was referring to Fleury's current $7M cap hit, which has been totally worth it. And during the last expansion draft, Fleury was considered a cap dump. Have we learned nothing?
Based on the players rumored to be exposed, the Kraken look like they'll be able to build a solid roster in front of Price if they're willing to spend to the cap. But they'll need to do that to make a Price acquisition worth the cap hit. But in my view this is the best strategy to build a fanbase, again pointing to the Golden Knights' success.

From my posts I’ve said Seattle would retain on the salary to get something good from the Leafs. Maybe retain a couple million and get Nic Robertson and a pick and take Kerfoot in the draft. Many creative things to make the money work.
Also it’s not tampering if the Leafs ask Seattle to speak to Price. Seattle is free to talk to these players who are available I believe.
Leafs need to acquire a top goalie. Might as well get the best.

Fleury's current cap hit today had nothing to do with the expansion draft in 2017. And during that expansion draft, Fleury was not considered a cap dump, but merely the older of two championship-winning goalies on the Pittsburgh Penguins' roster. They could not protect both, and based on the information available at the time, keeping the 22-year-old Matt Murray was a no-brainer.

Seattle doesn’t even get the protection lists until tomorrow. They’re not allowed to give the Leafs permission to talk to Price until he’d be their property upon selecting him on Wednesday.

I could see Kraken taking a flyer on an Eastern player with a big cap hit, like Price. But I’d be shocked if they let any western team off the hook on a big contract unless they are absolutely convinced the player will perform up to their contract.
Why would the Kraken want to let a division or conference rival free up much needed cap space? Their rival gets more options to get better and the Kraken likely get an underperforming player on a bad contract.

Man everyone is just “no you can’t do this can’t do that”.
It’s like you have to spell everything out.
Toronto can talk to Seattle and ask them to ask Price if he’d be interested.
Seattle can talk to Price and ask him “hey, would you be opposed to us trading you to Toronto?”

No it was a cap dump as well. They also sent a second rounder to pick him.

No they can't.
He is under contract to the Canadiens.
Montreal would have to give that permission and that's highly unlikely.
So Seattle would have to select Price before asking him about trading him.

Fleury was 32 when he was picked in the ED. Price is only 33 and imo has a better history than fleury even. It would be absolutely foolish of Seattle not to take price with the example of fleury so fresh in memory and the recent evidence of price in the playoffs. A fully motivated Price could probably lug them to the playoffs on his own.

Beginning at 10am ET tomorrow they will have an interview period with unprotected UFA/RFA players.
Doesn’t mean they can pass permission to another team to talk to a player.

This has the makings of a "the Habs fans will run the GM out of town" types of moves.
Maybe it's ownership pushing this?

Well that’s stupid, I’m going to make a $52 million investment and I can’t soeak to the player.
Doesn’t seem right to me.

They can ask Montreal to allow them to, but it’s not Montreal’s problem or responsibility to make things easy for Seattle to take their player.
