The term is fantastic, remember this guy is stellar and he's only 21.
So you're buying his prime years.
They must be banking on the Cap going up and him being their cornerstone for the best part of the next decade.
Not too much to complain about here.

Would make me happy if the Flames offered the exact same contract to both Johnny and Tkachuk. Put it on the table for a limited time though.

I'm probably as big of a fan of both players as any poster on here, but I don't think the Flames should do that, especially for Gaudreau.

He is on the same level as Makar, IMO.
A franchise D.

The RFA model where teams had control of the player until 27 so they used that when negotiating to keep the salaries reasonable, yeah that one.

Arguably better than Makar all around, though less flashy. And Makar is going to get paid a bit more than this if he signs long term... maybe 9. Hughes gets a little less, maybe 7.7.

Great term and AAV for the Stars. He is in the same conversation as Makar and will be a star for a decade.

I watched him a lot this past season and totally missed any “slump”.
He is an absolute stud D....21 years old, actually 22 tomorrow.

They still have control of the player until 27 (or 7 years' service, which in this case brings Heiskanen to 26).
Paying $8.4 million for a young #1 defenceman, when you're buying four UFA years as part of the deal, actually is reasonable. What's your beef?

He really is an amazing defenceman no doubt but I just shudder whenever I see an 8 year deal no matter who it is.
Like my goodness. 8 years is a long long long time for a player to be that dominant for those types of dollars. But this is the market I guess.

He'll still only be 30 at the end of it. I'm not a fan of 8-year deals myself, but this is about as close to low-risk as they get.

Agreed.
In the new reality where a couple of GMs unnecessarily broke the RFA model, paying RFAs like UFAs, and neutering the advantage of the team in negotiations, this is a good contract.
More risk to the teams of having to pay a guy like Tkachuk based on a career year
Kind of a shame, but it is what it is
Edit: it makes it *incredibly* challenging though, as a rising tide lifts all boats. When RFA guys like Heiskenen get 8.4, that expands the range of RFA salaries, and then you have guys like Rasmus who get 4.5. Is that a good contract? Dunno. So much maturation and development / plateau happens during the first few years of a player’s career.

I'd just be stoked to lock a player like this up until he's 30.
Top 3 young defenceman in the league, would trade our whole team for a player like this.

Have you watched him? You sign him to that contract the second he agrees.

Shot now? I feel like this is a post from the mid 2000's. This is the way it's been for over a decade, dude. All that happened is salaries shifted from rewarding players for past performance to banking on what they've shown so far.

Keep in mind that the salary cap has gone up so much since the days you're referring to when everything was more reasonable. Iginla's $7mil AAV from the mid 2000's is the equivalent of like a $14mil AAV today.
And this is an incredible, young star defensman that is on track to be one of the best in the league....at $8.45mil. Thats a good deal.

This falls into the RFA compensation range where the price is a first, a second and a third round draft pick. Was there a credible threat that another team might pay that, as well as their cap space, to offer him this deal? I'd say there could have been, that this deal is reasonably close to his market value accounting for compensation, and therefore not evidence that the RFA model is "broken", but rather a case where it is working as intended.
