So true. That one has been bugging me for quite some time and it's screwed up so often that I honestly thought it was some new internet slang like "pwned" or "teh".

My personal favourite- seeing a sign in a store saying "We do not except Interact."

I've probably done that before...

My question is, how did you do the "not equal" sign in the post title?

No, Blanket! That's IG-norant!

I have a lot of pet peeves when it comes to grammar and correctness. "differant" for "different"--or using words that are not words, like "irregardless." I also can't stand "allot" for "a lot."

When I correct people, they sometimes ask "what are you, an English teacher?"

I usually say "Yes."

I am far from perfect, but I do get pissed off at how common some spelling and grammar mistakes are made.

Case in point: http://how-to-spell-ridiculous.com

My new peeve is "then vs than".

I worked with a 50 year old woman who would take chicken out to "unthaw" for dinner. I asked her why she'd want frozen chicken for dinner. All I got was a vacant stare.

I will admit I am a culprit of this

I am an awful speller just terrible, I am in my second year at college and I think spell somewhere in the grade 4-6 range, because of this I have to type out all my posts in word its amazing just how red I see before spell check if I don’t proof read my posts they never make any sense

I recall one time when I opted just type out my post regularly and I got a tore new for the poor grammar…it was 5 or 6 words long and I think spelled everyone wrong

Oh, I forgot about that one. It's amazing how often we see "rediculous" around here!

Wasn't there a thread about grammar pet peeves a while back? Started, if I remember right, by our local grammar jack-boot Firefly?

If you use IE: http://www.iespell.com/

Or, just get Firefox 2.0. Spell checking built in.

If it makes you feel any better, spelling isn't linked to any other ability--i.e., being a good speller doesn't make you any better at anything else.

I say this as someone who has always been a good speller. I keep hoping that will start bringing home the bacon.

Seeing as how it has turned into a pet peeve type thread, this is my pet peeve. It's becoming more and more common for people to say, "I could care les" when they really mean "I could NOT (couldn't) care less".

My girlfriend used to use ignorant in place of rude or arrogant when I first met her. I let it slide for the first bit, but it's just one of those things that bugs me, so I defined it for her and asked her to use it correctly. Her entire family uses it that way, so I see where she got it from, but I don't understand how they could be interchangeable.

Another thing that annoys me is when people use 'purpose' instead of 'propose'.

Really? Wow. File that under the "learn something new every day" category.

Just a piece of advice--correcting the gf's family isn't a good way to make friends and influence people.

My wife's family pronounces "Salsa" like "Saltsa"; they call Italians "Eye-talians"; they say "Expresso" instead of "Espresso."

I'm married to their daughter, so I grin and bear it.

Hey now; I don't recall starting a grammar thread. I'm not 100% certain, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't me. Lately, it's only when people spell the same word incorrectly repeatedly that it bothers me. Like oppinion... WTF is that?

Firefox has a built in spell-checker (as does the google toolbar). It comes in handy (when I remember to use it).

In another thread, I was just quoted and the person used "your" when it should be "you're". I don't know if they did it on purpose (because of this thread) or whether it was a mistake.

Hmm. Bad memory, I guess. I must have just assumed it was you.

I'm surprised you weren't mad that I called you a "grammar jack-boot."

("oppinion" drives me nuts too!)
