Honestly it would be nice if people could read other peoples’ opinions and discussion without trotting out the ‘overreaction’ and ‘outrage’ nonsense. It definitely doesn’t make anything better

This line of thinking completely blows my mind.
Naw we won’t take the BPA from the Flames who is a proven top pairing Dman even at 38 who has no obligation after this season and instead we will take a UFA we can sign for free in Derek Ryan?
Other teams are likely trying to send players with multiple years on their deal back. Gio doesn’t come with an obligation after this season so his cap hit is hardly the problem you are trying to make it out to be.
Kylington is worth nothing as is Ryan. Gio has value league wide and could easily be flipped by Seattle. Send Gio 50% retained to another team next Wednesday. Vegas did it with Methot in Ottawa

I think Francis has a bit of pressure in that he knows his work will be compared to the Knights. Highly doubtful he takes waiver wire players or pending UFA's as accumulating assets via this draft is all about getting players that normally wouldn't be available for free. They will have a plan for every player they take whether it be to be part of the future or an asset to trade.

Honestly it would be nice if people just didn't massively over react. Lining up to fire someone for something that hasn't even happened doesn't do a whole lot to the discussion of whether or not something should happen.

Calgary does not plan to entice Seattle with assets to select Giordano. However, if Giordano is chosen, that would free up $6.75 million in cap flexibility for the Flames, who are ready to make a significant change.

Sounds good to me. I’m happy with taking the cap space. Just as long as we don’t trade a 1st, 2nd or valuable young piece like Dube or Valimaki, great.

I know it sounds like Hall wants to remain in Boston but I would still be happy with the Flames adding him as I think he can work well with Monahan. If the Flames lose Gio and sign Hall+Edler I like the look of the top 6/top 4
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Hall-Monahan-Mangiapane
Lucic-Backlund-Dube
Hanifin-Tanev
Edler-Andersson
Valimaki-Mackey
4th line can be a cheap vet and a couple of kids. Hopefully Valimaki or Mackey can take the step into the second pair during the season

VGK showed how potents assets + cap space can be.
Stage 1 of their success was extorting assets out of teams, including 1st round picks to take on bad contracts. That gave them a better than expected lineup and lots of assets.
Stage 2 was trading those assets (Suzuki, Brannstrom) for established NHL stars in deals that were only possible because Vegas could take in big cap hits.
Cap space is so valuable. Especially with the flat cap.

I wonder what the Venn diagram looks like of the people that get incensed that BT is "in" on almost all trade talk, and yet almost never lands the trade, and those that are incensed that BT is "in" on any move to try and protect Gio, and yet may not actually land anything.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

As much as I'd love to see this, given the history with this GM, I fear it'll be the same lineup with some new 4th line scrubs for good measure with some of Gio's money going to Johnny's new inflated salary. Pat and the panel was talking about it on 960 yesterday. It was a consensus (for what that's worth) that they are going to roll with a similar lineup with the top line of Johnny, Lindholm and Tkachuk being given the full year to see what they have... wash, rinse, repeat.

So IF Gio gets claimed, does that mean we have $21M in cap space??

Depends what the cost to keep him is and what the Flames plan to do at the deadline. If it costs a second round pick to keep him and they are prepared to move him at the deadline for assets then I am on board.

Zach Hyman and Keith Yandle.
They'll be our Hudler and Wideman signings.

We could only hope signing Hyman and Yandle turn out like Hudler and Wideman.
And that's a low bar.

haha no this is happening. we are absolutely going to trade for OEL

There are good LD options available
Oleksiak and Martinez will cost a bit. McCabe could come cheap due to his injury. Edler if the Canucks don’t want him probably wants to stay close on a 1 year deal
Going to make the super bold decision that one of those 4 is a Flame next season

2. Purposely expose Backlund knowing that is who Francis prefers. Obviously this would be discussed in advance but sacrificing Backlund to protect Gio is something I can get behind. The long term cap relief helps the team especially with 3 pretty huge deals up next year (Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane)
3. Making a hockey deal where the team sends a protected asset but also gets an asset back from Seattle via another team. Trading Backlund or Monahan for a piece and part of that deal also ensures Seattle takes another Flame not named Gio in expansion.
|
Seattle is not picking Lucic to get a second and third round pick. That’s absurd. That’s more in line with the cost of not picking Gio and going with Kylington.
