Go ahead, show me what makes the North Division the worst. So far, all you've got is ‘Because I say so’. I call BS.

Although I agree that the North division was probably the worst division last year I also understand your point there was no way to quantify or prove that narrative. End of day the only recent objective data we can draw on is that Montreal beat Las Vegas in the Conference Finals.

I am suggesting the division was not weak based on those teams' winning percentage in their regular divisions in 2019-20.
Are we all clear now?

Oh, your point was that the Canadian teams were average 2 years ago? Okay carry on. I thought we were talking about last year.

Oilers aren’t in Cap jail. Stalock or shore or Russell would be perfect to be taken.

21.2M in pure crap on the roster (Keith, Kassian, Neal, Kostkinen, Sekera/Lucic dead cap). Over 1/4 of the cap tied up in crap that will likely be a backup goalie, third pair D and bottom 6 winger. Neal will be a healthy scratch type.
Oilers likely buyout 2 of those players and keep the dead cap going.
If they buyout Neal+Kostkinen that will be $5.6M in pure dead cap for the next 2 years (Sekera and Lucic dead money also factored in)

They have some cap room but a whole lot of holes on that roster to fill. Also they, like the Flames, have no contributors on ELC's they can count on.

Fully expect Benson and McLeod to be on the team if they don’t get taken, and JP making just over 1 mil is like an elc
Edit: Also Bouchard will be on the 3rd pair, and Holloway will be pushing at some point this year.

Expose Gio
If he's taken (and I still think it's a big IF), then sign someone to a big 1 yr deal like BUF did for Hall, even if it's above FMV.
Suter 1x5M
Edler 1x4M
Krejci 1x6M (or Getzlaf, though he's unlikely)
Then keep or trade at TDL. Easy peesy.

I think he is recommending replacing Gio with ONE of those old boys who are all younger than Gio

Can add Ben Bishop to that list:

When is the deadline for teams to submit the protection list? And when can the public see them?
And I guess when will be the expansion draft and we find out who Seattle takes?

July 17: By 5 p.m., teams must submit protection lists for the Expansion Draft to the league.
July 18: The NHL must approve and distribute the protection lists to all NHL teams by 10 a.m. They will likely be made public at about that time.
July 21: Seattle must submit their Expansion Draft choices to the NHL by 10 a.m.

With the Ritchie signing, the Flames list almost-certainly will look like this...
PROTECTED: - Tkachuk
- Gaudreau
- Monahan
- Backlund
- Lindholm
- Mangiapane
- Dube
- Hanifin
- Andersson
- Tanev
- Markstrom (NMC)
EXPOSED VETERANS AS REQUIRED: - Lucic (NMC - Waived)
- Ritchie
- Giordano
- Parsons

I found it weird that Craig Button had Gawdin protected over Backlund. Made no sense to me unless it is a move to keep Seattle away from Gio. If that is the case let’s make a deal with a team who is looking to move a forward instead of protecting Glen Gawdin

I believe this is why Ritchie was just signed. To give the Flames enough NHL vet forwards to expose so they can now protect Backlund.
