This would be the smart move.

This will not be the move.

I just think this team is in such a stupid position.

They want to win. They just hired a short-term coach (apparently) to maximize their short-term ability to win (...while being a non-playoff team), and hey they're about to lose their best defenceman.

What a stupid position to be in.

Being a sentimental fan ended for me the day Jarome Iginla was traded. If the Flames can rid themselves of the most popular player in franchise history then I’m okay with letting Gio go. No doubt he’s done great things for the organization and should be recognized when the time is right. However, this is not the time. The Flames need to be focussed on asset management and as a GM you need to be able to separate the business and loyalty aspect. I hope management does the right thing even if it’s the hard thing.

I actually don't hate this idea. If Gio was willing to make a deal with the team to take a buyout then re-sign with the Flames after the expansion draft on a 1 or 2 year deal at less AAV, it could work for everyone. Gio (depending on the dollar amount) wouldn't be out any actual money, and in fact may come out ahead. The Flames would potentially gain cap space and with Gio becoming a UFA my understanding is he wouldn't be subject to the expansion draft. Maybe it's naive and of course it's easy for me to suggest while playing with someone else's money, but if Gio really wants to be in Calgary and the Flames really want to stay, it could be the sort of 'out of the box" solution that just might fit.

While I would be fine with the Flames using a 3rd-7th round pick to retain Giordano, I doubt that’ll be enough based on Friedman’s reporting of how high Francis has set the prices. In that case, I think the Flames ought to expose Gio and let him be selected or trade Gio for a reduced price if they can.

Don’t know about you guys but I have enough of Gio. We certainly lose something if they take him but it’s no big loss to me. This franchise needs a major surgery. Of course it won’t happen with these people running the team

I am hoping it's this.

He helps you next year maybe, but the flexibility of his 6.75 probably serves the team better longer term. It's time to prepare for the next chapter.

Do we even have to protect anyone? I would expose the entire team. Not a single player I would even care to protect and keep. As far as I’m concerned, everyone is up for grabs.

Please don’t waste any assets. We do not have enough assets as it is.

I am not even convinced that Seattle would select Gio if he is exposed.

Love the player, and I respect everything he has done for this team, and for this city. But we will be losing an asset to Seattle. If that asset is 38 years old, it is not the worst case scenario.

Haha.
On a day of emotionally overwrought takes here, yours is the best so far.

I'm surprised no one has thought to respond to this.

This seems like a really simple solution. If I was in Giordano's shoes and I truly only wanted to play for the Flames, I would absolutely make a statement about retirement if selected by Seattle. I had a very similar question written up, but I thought I would first see if it's already been discussed and found your lone, unanswered question.

Here it is: If Gio really wants to stay a Flame for his entire career, couldn't he simply say that he'll retire if Seattle picks him in the expansion draft? He is at the perfect age for people to not legitimately question a statement like that.

This seems like a simple way to "protect" 7-4 instead of 7-3 and if Tampa can get away with icing a team like that in the playoffs I'm not sure anyone would bat an eye at the Flames.
Maybe I'm unaware of some kind of rule that's in place to prevent this?

I think the league would force the flames to protect him and expose someone else. Not sure it would work the same as Perry in this situation.

Um, yes.

The half a dozen or so players that still possess value in a trade scenario are worth not exposing only to be snatched up for free.

Just cause we had a frustrating season and the community isn't teeming with hope doesn't mean you neglect the business and asset management side of maintaining your roster.

He shouldn't even be in the position to make the decision to keep or not keep Giordano at this point but since our ownership is MIA, here we are.

Trading partner critera:
- Gio has to agree to be traded there
- They have to have cap room
- They have to be in a position to be able to benefit from a rental
- They have to have be able to protect him from the expansion draft
- They have to have something we would accept in return

Even with all that, the number one priority should be to trade him, so we don't have to worry about protecting him or giving something else up to be able to keep him.

Default LeBrun: Flames are looking at every single scenario to try and keep Giordano

The closer we get, the more I think a side deal will be made with Seattle. Everyone says the cost is ridiculously high right now so I’m assuming they are asking for 1st round picks to be persuaded not to draft certain players. If that’s their asking price, I assume the flames are countering with offering a 3rd round pick. If Seattle isn’t too stubborn I’m assuming it ends up being a conditional 2nd round pick. If the flames make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs with giordano playing X amount of games, it becomes a first round pick. If not, it remains a 2nd round pick. A price I’m sure most on this board will not be happy about but that’s where I see it ending up.

He has been working on this part of his game (to the determent of his offensive game) for the last three years. He is not worse than Valimaki has shown last year, and is actually about average.

The advantage that Kylington has is that he can speed back and cover any gaffs that he makes. Hanifin is fast, but Kylington is another level. If he is given a little confidence and regains his offensive form, he could be a steal for Seattle. I'm sure that Francis knows this, and if he can get (say) a second round pick (to save Gio) and Kylington, I think that he would be thrilled.

Couldn't Gio threaten retirement and take a coaching role with the flames for a year?

Based on the way Murray Edwards runs his other businesses I have a hard time believing he is MIA on this decision. He will make this call like he made the call to sign Neal/Brouwer, trade Iginla, etc.
