Backlund is exposed on the CF simulator because they still protect Lucic based on his NMC (which he has waived).

Yeah, I figured that as well. But to be consistent I used the rules of the simulator to limit the whining (obviously a mistake) and made the selections as they fell. It wouldn't have mattered if Backlund or Lucic or Giordano were available, with the selections made at those positions I felt I filled out the roster as needed and had the appropriate bodies that would provide minor league depth.

With the buyout of Parise and Suter that has me thinking: I wonder if there is an avenue to buyout Gio and re-sign him after the expansion draft to a lesser AAV contract that pays him more total money overall than his current contract.
That way, we essentially give up zero assets to protect him and we force the Kraken into taking Ryan or Kylington and lose nothing of true value.

Barring any kind of trade, The Calgary selection will come down to 3 players...
Giordano
Backlund
Kyllington
As for the Kraken, they wont be able to get to Vegas level first year as teams will learn from mistakes. There will be some good 2nd/3rd Liners to be had in the mold of:
Stanford (STL)
Laughton (PHI)
Tyler Johnson (TB)
D.Towes (COL)
Mayfeild (NYI)
Dermott (TOR)
Then the possibility of some older vets on the back 9 of their career:
Quick?
Krejci?
Johannson or Duchene?
Sprinkle in some up and coming prospects:
Steel (ANA)
Gauthier (NYR)
Honka (DAL)
Bean (CAR)
rounds out a pretty successful draft IMO. I could also see something being worked out with Vegas to acquire MAF as well. I look forward to seeing the final protected lists. from there i'll draft a team.

Gio's buyout 2.25 x 2 years ($4.5), so you'd have to sign him for something equalling $2.25M or more. Let's say you sign him for $2.5. The cap hit on the buyout is $2.25 (for 2 years), so you'd save $2M off of your cap hit next year.
Of course as a UFA Gio could go somewhere else.

Eric Johnson just waived for Colorado so they no longer need to protect him instead of Toews. Looks like Graves will be the odd man out there now.

SIAP but has Calgary considered trading Gio before the expansion draft?
I get that you aren't going to get value out of him, but getting something rather than losing him for nothing is more appealing to me...Certainly would not be in favor of paying Seattle an asset not to take him...
just wondering.

It would have to be to a team that has an open protected D slot, which is not very many.

Exactly. Calgary saves cap and doesn't lose Gio to expansion. Gio gets more money overall.
Like you said: it only works if Gio wants to stay in Calgary but, if he does, this is a win-win situation for the Flames and Gio.
Heck if it was a 3 x $2.5M deal, it's still a win for the Flames even if Gio continues to regress.
I certainly like this idea a whole lot more than paying assets to protect Gio or losing him for nothing.

Would a team trading for him provide more value than 6.75M in cap space?

The fact that the Hawks could unload Duncan !@#$ing Keith, makes me think that Treliving could have found a home for Giordano.
...unless he isn't going to be exposing him.

Maybe his only option was the team that just stupidly traded for Keith?
I rather Gio be a member of the Kraken than the Oil

How is Backlund in this mix without a trade happening to make our 7 protected forwards more complicated?
Lucic waived.

The Timeline
The Expansion Draft is actually on July 21, but the process begins early and moves through stages designed to allow teams to assemble their protection lists and for Seattle to make their choices.
July 13: Deadline for asking players to waive their no-move clause for the Expansion Draft. If the player agrees, the team is not required to protect the player in the draft.
July 16: Last day to put a player on waivers prior to the Expansion Draft, and the deadline for players to agree to waive their no-move clauses. Waivers are required prior to a buyout, and teams may wish to buy out players prior to the draft, so they would need to do it by this date. The buyout window opens 24 hrs after the Stanley Cup Final.
July 17: At 3 p.m. the Expansion Draft trade and waiver freeze begins. No NHL SPCs can be signed in this period except by Seattle in relation to the draft. All other teams must live with their roster as it exists during the freeze. Seattle is able to sign pending UFAs and RFAs to SPCs (see below) and also to make trades with teams that will be finalized by the league when the freeze is lifted. But two other teams cannot make side deals, nor can they re-sign their own UFAs or RFAs during this period.
July 17: By 5 p.m., teams must submit protection lists for the Expansion Draft to the league.
July 18: The NHL must approve and distribute the protection lists to all NHL teams by 10 a.m. They will likely be made public at about that time. At that time Seattle may begin interviewing UFAs and RFAs who are available for selection (on the exposure list), and they may sign them to contracts if they reach agreement. That signing counts as their selection from that team.
For example: if Seattle were to sign Frederik Andersen to a contract in this period, he would become their selection from the Toronto Maple Leafs. They may only speak to players who are exposed, not anyone on a protection list. And by default, they can only sign one player per team.
July 21: Seattle must submit their Expansion Draft choices to the NHL by 10 a.m. They must also submit any SPCs for signed players, and the distribution of the list of choices to the public will take place by 8 p.m. No details have been provided yet as to what form this will take.
July 22: The trade and waiver freeze and signing moratorium are lifted at 1 p.m.
