Is Landeskog really expected to go to free agency?
I've just assumed he was like Ovechkin and they have the paperwork on an extension completed and they're just waiting until after the expansion draft to file it.

If we give up Tkachuk and Dube, and then go 4 and 4, that means we can only protect:
Eichel
Gaudreau
Lindholm and
Monahan
leaving Mangiapane and Backlund exposed.
So then Eichel costs us Tkachuk, Dube and Mangiapane, leaving us with one actual line. Or as I like to call it, we'd be Oiler-deep.

I can't imagine a trade for Eichel before the expansion draft.

I'm a fan of Landeskog's, and I would love to have a shot at him, but I think this is pretty close to the truth, and they will retain him one way or another.

To some degree that is true. But it’s a matter of degrees.
Toews goes from 71 to 68.
Kane’s from 87 to 75.
Bolland from 39 to 49, there’s a huge exception.
Hossa from 67 to 62.
Brown from 49 to 47.
Sharp from 60 to 53.
Kopitar from 73 to 69.
Carter from 57 to 54.
Richards from 56 to 54.
The morale being, if you want to win the Stanley Cup, you need players who produce close to their regular season averages, which means that even with the closer checking and lesser PP, those players elevate their level of playing and still produce quite well.
Chicago and LA had those type of players. That’s why they won cups.

Seems like a no-brainer for the Avs given their current cap situation but they do seem to operate a little differently than a lot of teams. I think he's a good player that has leadership intangibles but I don't know if he's prolific enough of a scorer to sign into his mid-30's. Seems like a guy that could have his game nosedive in his 30's if not surrounded by elite talent.

The contract for virtually every UFA will look bad in the final years. That’s just a given. Any team with a policy of never signing a UFA contract that overpays in the final years will have to pretty much forego UFA deals for quality players altogether, and replace all their 29 year old stars internally with elite young prospects. Tough to do.
I’m sure the Avs recognize this is a cyclical league, and they need to make a push now while their core is in its prime, knowing it will mean some long-term pain in cap hits.

Yikes, I am really not liking what Salim Valji has for free agent names for the Flames:
Quote:
If the goal is to alter the team’s culture, add experience, and contend for the playoffs next season, Nate Thompson, Luke Glendening, Darren Helm, and Trevor Lewis would fit as defensively reliable veterans.
On the back end, the Flames may target the likes of Brendan Smith, Mark Pysyk, or Erik Gudbranson to slot in on the third pair to help Juuso Valimaki, who had an inconsistent first full NHL season.
Should Giordano get taken by Seattle, would Treliving ante up for winger Nick Foligno as both a top-nine forward and to fill the ensuing leadership void?

I hate to be rude but I'm not a fan of that guy (Edit - Yes, Salim Valji of TSN). Stopped following him on Twitter too. Just bad takes and a surprising lack of knowledge about the players across the NHL for a TSN hockey analyst

If you are talking about Salim Valji, not a fan either. Comes off as an Oilers' homer to me, but it might just be me.

The Flames' needs: offense from the back end, depth scoring, backup goalie
What Salim Valji thinks the Flames need: old depth veterans who can't score, old defensemen who can't score, and no mention of any potential backup goalies.

If Treliving spends the off-season chasing intangibles to change the culture of the team then he is completely hopeless.
The reality of this team is that they lose because they are not talented enough. Full stop.
There's no Troy Brouwer/James Neal/Mike Smith level of "intangibles" that will help turn a under-skilled poorly constructed roster into a championship quality team.

The trades come first. Will have to see how that shakes out and then identify some FAs.
Someone like Marcus Johansson maybe. Or Marcus Sorenson. Mikael Granlund sticks out also.

Even with the injuries, I would rather pay the extra million+ to sign someone like Jaden Schwartz over Nick Foligno. Or someone like Mikael Granlund.
Don't sign anyone born before 1992 unless he's a backup goalie or a near-league minimum depth player.
Sutter is the coach. Intangibles will come. But scoring won't unless their is proper personnel.

Lots of options at Back up goalie level. I wasn't aware Ullmark was a UFA and not an RFA. He'd definitely be one to target.

Salim has been v disappointing IMO. I dont get the sense he's passionate about Hockey either.
IMO TSN is getting what they're willing to pay for in the alberta market though. No slight to Valji but this was clearly a promotion for him so likely he was less expensive than other options.
