Spector on Sportsnet:

"My sources tell me that he still has game".

LOL. 'My sources', yeah Mark, you're so plugged in. How about this - did you watch him play? Because everyone else did.

Jason Gregor. The same "insider" who denied the Neal/Lucic swap was happening on the day it occurred.

A tradition like no other. 2 weeks to the day this comes out as a rumor and trial balloon to the Oilers fans and media, it gets done. Like so many other "big moves" the Oilers do, it has to be stretched out like a trailer for an expensively produced bad movie to get maximum exposure in the media.

Like coaches from Renney to Eakins and the McLellan, GMs from Tambelleni to Chia, players all the way back to Comrie and Smith, Lowe mobilizes his local media minions a fortnight in advance to get the mouth breathing fans firmly against said players so that by the time the move happens.

Same with positive news. The 10 day media love affair with Keith Gretzky last year, never heard from again. The lead up to Holland and before that Nicholson, was espouted 2 weeks in advance. Nugent Hopkins was rumored long before he signed. Now Keith. The few and far between UFAs are courted by the organization and the media branch to get the support behind them and played up about fans being excited for them.

Lowe just had to make sure that the league insiders in the media know he is active in cases like this, and can't keep his mouth shut when a deal is imminent, and more, gets his media arm to blanket the public as they did two weeks ago. Sure, it likely erodes his position on trades but he doesn't care, he will text whoever he needs to in the media to drop tidbits to keep those guys close to get some positive PR with schlubs like Dreger and other guys in the mud...and he can't resist any opportunity to puff his chest out to somehow validate himself as a GM.

That sort of salesmanship amongst the assembled media did pay off, and it was likely part of his method all along: getting him somehow inexplicably voted into the HHOF 26 years after retirement.

He was instructed to sign Keith from his boss.

Just like his boss wanted some cheap PR by hurriedly signing Kassian to an extension, with the timing coming between the two BOA games last year after the Tkachuk incident, with Kassian being portrayed a martyr and defender of the hockey "code".

When the Keith thing goes sideways, as with all the decisions that previous GMs and coaches had no input in but carried out on orders, the fans will naturally turn against said GM or coach, Lowe will get a nod to the media to start the final smear campaign, and they'll be out.

So argumentative and defensive. Seems he was pressured from above to get this deal done at all costs even though everyone around him was telling him it was a bad deal. Now he has to defend it as his own.

Holland also says it’s almost a zero percent chance Klefbom plays next year. Talks with Larsson since February and now looks to be going to FA. Who’s going to be their D unit? Nurse, Keith, Bear, Russell, Bouchard 21 NHL games, Broberg 0 NHL games? Lol.

Nurse Bear
Boberg Keith
Russell Bouchard.

Wow, that is likely the worst blueline in the league by a large stretch.

I expect that sales of this guy scored T-Shirts and video cassettes to go through the roof.

I knew Chicago players hate western Canadian teams and will do everything to destroy those teams. But I didn't know they will sacrifice themselves taking one last suicide mission.

Would a buyout result in EDM getting cap credit for a year, and CHI a penalty, followed by a year where EDM has a buyout of something like $500k?
It’s retire. If Keith retires after next year Chicago is on the hook for 5.5 mil in cap and Edmonton actually gets 3.4 negative cap.

Holland from today's presser.
Quote:
“Did you want me to get him for free?” he said. “It’s hard to squeeze people in this league.

“The deal has to work for both teams. You can sit on the sidelines and analyze the deal. I’ve got to make a deal. I got to try to do something to make our team better. I believe I made our team better today because we’ve got a legitimate, top-four defenceman.”
