When he was hired, I joked that Holland was only there to make playing for the Oilers so undesirable that McDavid would demand a trade. Then, Holland would make a deal to send McDavid to Detroit, wait a respectable period of time and then quit and rejoin the Wings.
After today, I'm starting to think that may not be a joke.

Which is hilarious.
As you say, Perry was league-minimum. And he plays on the 4th line, where he can bring intangibles without effing up the lineup.
Keith will play top 4 minutes, get tons of PP time, will be their 2nd best defenseman (lol), costs $5.5M, and they gave up 2 assets to get him.

1. Every time I see an update to this trade it gets better. The pick is upgraded to a cond. 2nd and the oilers have to use up a contract spot on another useless plug lol. So remarkably inept.

I’m seeing some ‘Well Keith isn’t terrible’ sprinkled throughout this thread and while I do agree with that, there is no doubt Keith is able to play a top 4 role in the NHL as of last season his respective team missing the playoffs not withstanding. With all of that said there is an inherent gamble you take with players who are as old as Keith is and has become the gamble being that with each passing season could come that dreaded cliff all players dive off and the gamble is now Edmonton’s for the player in question… which brings me to a much larger question. Why? Why did Edmonton trade for a gamble that is as big as Keith is and at no savings (retention) while dealing from an area they have no business dealing from right now in a young 24 YO 93 NHL games Dman and a mid pick.
Why Edmonton?? Because Mcdavid? Because Lowe? Because Edmonton????? What ever it is I actually ask you to not reveal the secret… you do you Edmonton! And we, well we will continue to overeat popcorn while near dying of laughter.
Edmonton is no good. I’d be absolutely furious right now if I was an Edmonton fan yet there is mercy in this world.

Would you pay 5 million bucks for a bottom pairing 39 year old defensemen. Because clearly he can't play on a first pair, he's horrible against good opposition. Do you want a 39 year old playing second pair minutes? Probably not over an 82 game season. So third pairing is his likely destination. And you have him for 2 years.
I expect a few things. The oilers will look worse next year, they're going to lose Barrie who drove their PP, they're likely going to lose Larsson who's younger and better then Keith. They might get Klefbom back which would suck for their cap, then pray that nobody sneezes around them.
They're probably going to resign a ancient starting goalie because Koskinen will never be starter material, and they have nothing good on the farm.
They need to upgrade their top 6 and bottom 6, but with next years situation they really can't afford a big dollar long term contract.
Sniff - This move reeks of desperation (maybe to appease the Connor), stupidity and the slight hint of onion flavored cheesies.
There is only one reaction to this deal from this non Oiler fan

What’s funny is that the oilers are in a desperate “must win something right now mode.” All the draft picks and prospects they get starting now and over the next 4 years are most likely useless to the McDavid-Draisaitl era. So if they really want to make something of their “window”, they may need to make use of these draft picks as currency in trades. They are blowing this currency acquiring guys like Anthanasiou and Keith and in the trade for Neil (giving Calgary the 3rd round pick). These picks could have been used for players that could actually help them win something for once. E=NG
