I suspect the Oilers know what Barrie's intentions are, and they are to get out of Edmonton for as big a contract as he can get.

We just saw a SC final where the 167 playoff games of Corey Perry showed the value of playoff experience. Keith has 135 Playoff games all as a #1 d-man and most as the best D-man on the ice for either team.
In the playoffs Keith >>>>>> Barrie and will be for as long as he plays
The closest comparison to Keith would be Lidstrom who was very good as a 41 year old.

you are so full of #### your eyes are brown...if the Flames did this deal you would be losing it
always the contrarian

McDavid’s agent telling Holland he needs to surround his client with winners if he wants McDavid to stick around. Holland grasping at Keith’s availability like a guy on a losing streak buying $500 more in chips to win back his losses. I can totally see it.

I think Keith at his peak is maybe being undervalued here a little.
But of course that's not what the Oilers are getting here. I haven't watched a blackhawks game in quite awhile. Well since the bubble last year.
Is Keith really that bad now? What are Chicago fans saying about this? Just happy to clear up the cap space?

Pretty sure Gio's NTC would have taken care of that.

Hard to see this as anything but a massive overpay by the Oilers, at least if you go by Keith's advanced age, 1st-pairing d-man salary & major drop in point scoring production.
That said, I haven't watched Keith closely and don't trust iffy stats analysis where he shows poorly.
|
Not sure what iffy fancy stats would even matter or whether the staples eye test would suffice. Are “iffy fancy stats” age, cap hit, and point production? ‘Cause those are already negative without additional “iffy fancy stats”.

I can't remember the exact conditions, for example if EDM pays Keith for a year and then buys him out. Theoretically, then EDM would have a higher caphit than salary during his stay with the team. Would a buyout result in EDM getting cap credit for a year, and CHI a penalty, followed by a year where EDM has a buyout of something like $500k?
|
If Jeff Carter retires this year, the Pens get a small negative caphit. It's probably similar for EDM if he retires after 1 year...not sure about a buyout.

What makes me really happy about this deal is that if Jones never plays a single game for the hawks and the draft pick busts completely, Chicago still wins this trade because they got out of paying 5+ mil for drunken Duncan.

Yeah, you're probably right, and that's probably retirement related... my mistake. I remember, VAN being on the hook for Loungo's cap recapture, and NSH being afraid of Weber retiring at the end of his career, so you're probably right.
That said, if Keith retires after 1 year it might benefit EDM a little. I don't know how much though. Otherwise, it just seems like a bad deal.

I really love this deal for the Oilers. I can't believe Chicago gave up Keith. Seriously? When is Chicago going to start turning it around? Horribly run organization. Edmonton got a LOT better this year!
Ok, ok... there is no way to say this with a straight face. I KNOW even Ricardow is laughing at his own troll posts of Keith = Lidstrom.
This is beyond stupid. Oilers give Chicago cap space AND a pick? Why? Keith may have worn an A, but from what I know, that leadership they had in their cup winning seasons was Toews, Seabrook and Sharp, IIRC. Nobody was talking about what a great leader Keith was. I am sure he will provide some strong veteran presence, so I guess that's a legitimate plus I would bet.
That's all I have though. Veteran presence. That's it.
Oh Edmonton, my hat comes off and I bow to you. I have never seen any other entity, be it person, nation or corporation, be so determined to suck as much as the Oilers do.

He was every bit as much their #1 guy as Gio was to the Flames.
With no Toews, Seabrook (17 M in cap space) Kirby Dach limited to 19 games and playing with a mid-level AHL goalie making 800k /yr in his league debut 2 years from playing in the ECHL the Hawks got 55 pts same as the Flames in a significantly tougher division.
I just can't see him having a bad year last year as an important player on a team that should have been clearly the worst team in the league...

But he did have a bad year. Sorry. The Hawks were outscored 48-37 at 5-on-5 with him on the ice.

I was a big fan of Keith's play back in their glory days - I like the way he plays (played) the game. But he is not that guy any more.

What might be the funniest thing of all about this trade is that Keith is arguably the Oilers' 2nd best defeneman right now.
