This is similar to the Flames bringing in Bouwer in that the GM felt he needed to overpay for veteran leadership. It didn't work out for the Flames nor do I expect this to work out for the Oilers. If he had only one more year left on his contract I could maybe see the risk but will they even be able to put him on the ice in the 2022/23 season? Also I don't understand why they would throw in a 3rd round pick when the Hawks aren't retaining salary. Seems like the Oilers really wanted him badly.
Except Brouwer was 31. It was reasonable to expect him to not be such a turd.
So they spend about 4.7 of their remaining 16 million in cap space. It feels pretty clear that both Larsson and Barries agents told the Oilers to bug off.
They need a starting goalie, and Yamamoto is probably going to want a big raise though he wasn't all that good last year.
So if Klefbom comes back they're replacing Larsson and Barrie with Keith and Klefbom, that's just awful.
And they'll probably resign smith for 4 or 5.
Holland was brutal in his later years in Detroit. Now he's hit full Grandpa is insane mode with Edmonton.

I will trust those that actually watched Keith and the fancy stats crowd that shows him sucking hard for the last few years. Too bad, as he was a great player.
But, suck it oilers. Were they worried they might lose Jones to expansion? Does it make sense to throw in a third so that doesn't happen? To acquire a washed up Keith?
The answer is No. No good.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
