I do wonder if there is some strategy to taking a goalie in the first round in a draft year that is relatively weak, and that has a lot of question marks due to COVID.
Maybe Wallstedt ends up being the Vasilevskiy of the 2021 draft.
And it's less risky using the 1st on a goalie this year, than say in a draft like 2015 where you have Barzals and Boesers still available into the middle of the first round.

I guess that means he was less of a reach but he still wasn't a name that could be found in most of that year's publicly available draft guides. The point being that a team's list could be wildly different from anything regarded as consensus or conventional, and still get it right.

Bergeron was 28th in central scouting rankings and was always projected in the middle of the 2nd round to middle of the 3rd round.

This might be the most fun draft ever. Rankings are all over the place. It’s going to be fascinating to look back in 6 years.

Listened to the Firestarter podcast today. They did a full bit with Tod Button.
My takes from what said are this:
Big Swedish crop this year.
Over scouted USHL/NCAA personally because he's a dual citizen, has a normal non covid era read on those players in those leagues.
OHL will be really under represented in the 1st round. 2nd round picks are going to be extremely valuable. He intimated that they have a pretty exciting list beyond round 1.
He sees the ledges as top 8. Then 9 to 16. Also said it's going to be wide open after the top 6 though.
Wallstedt is on the radar.
A lot of WHL candidates are being ranked on two years ago and using this shortened season to fill in some progression data.
Tod got suuuper sick of watching video.
He pointed out their Euro scouts as doing a ton of great work this year.
A bunch more but I got busy.
No big take aways but I think with their data set they're looking at swedes and Americans.

On the OHL . Tod said they've been tracking guys for a few years and they have a good read on most of them and where'd they be. Which led to the 2nd round being pretty valuable .
In my mind he is talking about Pinelli. Just a guess though.
Oh and the podcast guys kind of tried to bring up not taking a dman and Tod said they're pretty happy with what they got and they'll take BPA on their list. At 12
A d man could drop to them or they reach for Lambos or Ceulmans. He didn't say that, I'm just speculating.
He also said trading down was a thing to be prepared for too.
They prodded him on Sillinger. Made some interesting points about comparing WHL competition to USHL competition. Seems like a complicated balancing act trying to read his performance.

Did he specify Lambos and Ceulmans?
I would be thrilled with Pinelli in the 2nd round.

No, that was my 2 cents. I dont think he's looking at d men at all honestly.

I think stillman is a gem. Really hoping he'd be there by our third still but he's been climbing. Same with Aleksi heimosalmi.

Interesting to here them so high on euros/swedes this draft. Our European drafting (junior scouting) has been abysmal of late.

To be fair, outside of Ilya Nikolaev in round 3 in 2019, the last time they took a European(playing overseas) in the top 3 round was Granlund in 2011. Any late round pick that hits is the exception not the rule.
It is still possible our European scouting is bad but I don't think we know enough to say it is for sure.
Edit: forgot Oliver Kylington. Still some hope there but end of second round picks probably don't turn into much and it was a good gamble. I just don't think we have enough data to confirm if the scouts were bad or we just don't pick them enough/high enough to get a read on it.

Craig Button's final rankings are out. If you are of the mind it might reveal some insight into what his brother is thinking:
https://www.tsn.ca/craig-button-list...raft-1.1666944
He has Fedor Svechkov ranked 6 (which I believe is the highest I have seen him ranked). Pronman also has Svechkov linked to the Flames. So hmmmmmm.
