Second best manager in history? Had one of the best benches in any tournament in history and decided for some reason not to use it. Terrible mismanagement today, he cost them the victory.

I’m kind of glad Southgate’s negative tactics didn’t get rewarded in the end. England had incredible attacking talent in terms of both high-end talent and depth, and yet most of them sat on the bench all tournament.
I still think the England bench could have beat the staring 11.

Southgate did a good job in getting England to the finals but a manager needs to know when to push the chips in.
When England attacked they were giving Italy problems. Problem is they were set up to play negative so they didn’t attack enough.
And then in extra time that’s when a manager needs to read the pulse of that team. Italy was tired, their bench was a bit short due to injuries, and England could have went on the attack.
Instead they played for penalties and in the end they got what they deserved. Plus the PK selections were horrible, when I saw him subbing in guys who hadn’t taken a kick all tournament to take the penalties in that atmosphere I was ecstatic as an Italian fan. Talk about throwing guys to the wolves.

Yeah. Really questionable coaching and tactics all tournament long.
England has the horses to play attacking style against anyone, so it was disappointing to see them play cautious the whole time. Flat out dumb decisions in extra time and penalties for England. If Southgate changes his approach, or they get a better manager, there will be trophies in England’s future.
I think Italy is going to be dominant a la Spain circa 2008-2012. So many great young players, not least of which is a 22 year old Donnarumma. He’s scary good, and that deadpan after the championship save shows you he’s cut out for the biggest of matches. Good time to be an Italy fan. Congrats Azzuri and their supporters.
Social media on fire with memes now, mostly revolving around pineapple pizza.

He also got a sweetheart draw.

Keane alluded to this in the post match discussion, that you would have a 19 year old taking the 5th penalty.
Called out the more experienced players, the likes of Sterling and Grealish for not stepping up and having Saka take the penalty instead of them.
And then you have the likes of big ego Henderson who's willing to snatch the ball off Calvert-Lewin in meaningless friendlies to take penalties in order to be the man but when it came to the big stage and pressure won't put his name forward.

Yeah I was surprised both Sterling and Grealish didn’t shoot, they don’t seem like guys afraid of the moment.
Also not sure why you sub off Henderson who has taken penalties before and instead leave Stones on the pitch if you are subbing at 120 minute anyways.

Because it didnt matter.
Southgate was doing everything but waving a White Flag.
Bringing on Subs cold to take Pens? Subbing subs for Pens? He may think he's the smartest guy in the room but he just got a big reality check.

Well you already had one CB who never takes penalties offer to step up to take one ahead of him so it's not out there that the other one would too.
He obviously let Southgate know he wasn't interested in taking on the responsibility hence getting subbed at 120. He wasn't even putting himself forward at all let alone top 5.
We just have to wait until the next friendly before he wants to be the man again.
Can't wait until he's asked why he didn't step up. A 19 yr old kid with more guts.

Southgate said he picked the PKers. Watching the game and he had his list right when ET ended. I don’t think he asked who wanted to take the kicks.
And considering he made 2 subs with PKs in mind my guess is he had his 5 coming into the game.
Quote:
“That is my responsibility,” said Southgate. “I chose the guys to take the kicks. I told the players that nobody is on their own in that situation. We win and lose together as a team. They have been tight throughout and that’s how it needs to stay.
“It is my decision to give [Saka] that penalty. That is totally my responsibility. It is not him or Marcus or Jadon. We worked through them in training. That is the order we came to.
|
I’m sure Sterling would have stepped up. He looked really frustrated at not taking a kick and seems like the guy who wouldn’t be afraid of the moment. Same with Grealish.
I’m not sure where This narrative about players “stepping up” is coming from. To me it looks pretty clear that these were Southgate’s calls.

Hes always going to say that, but it looked like in the overhead shots of the team in a circle before pens he asked sancho and sancho nodded

I am 100% sure that at some stage around camp a conversation would have been had with all players regarding how they felt about taking a kick.

Regardless of who chose the kickers it is hilarious that four of the misses in the shootout came from guys doing that stupid stutter step run up. Just do what Kane does, pick your spot and just blast it in.

Unbelievable! Awesome game and a well deserved Euro championship!!!
Shame on the English players taking off their medals or refusing to put them on. They played well and shouldn’t be ashamed.

I was basically a neutral today and just wanted a good, entertaining game. Watching the run-up to the game though, the hooligans and fools did push me toward Italy. I feel like this was a good England team and they played pretty well. Sure, maybe they had an easy road, but you can only beat the teams in front of you.
I do wonder what Southgate is thinking in a lot of cases. To me, players like Foden, Sancho, Grealish and Saka should’ve played a lot more than they did. He just had the team setup awfully negatively through out. Today I think that there was really no service forward which meant Kane had to drop deep and try to make that link work.

I'm so torn on him as manager at this point, on one hand he clearly is an excellent man manager, the spirit in the team is the best I can ever remember for an england squad, and in an ambassadorial role hes made the england job matter again.
His style of play though doesnt fit with the talent we have. Jack graelish and Jadon sancho would start for likely every team in the tournament. Saka is a great player, and the fact he was willing to step up at his age shows everything about the man, but he shouldn't be playing ahead of those two.
The worry going forward is that most of this group is going to get better but there is also a window of only the next 2 tournaments with a world class striker, and no one right now looking likely to take over. If this is how he played it this tournament, why should anyone think hes going to be willing to play on the front foot next year with graelish and sancho starting, or play Bellingham who is probably going to be the best CM we have by next year.

Sterling looked frustrated every time a light breeze kicked up. I've never seen someone spend that much time bitching at work, let alone while engaged in an alleged leisure activity.

Southgate is a good coach and bad manager.
Why you saved all of that energy for the 119th minute is beyond me. I think everyone after (and before) the game knew he was a poor game manager, and this just confirmed it. Shame because this was a very talented England squad that just needed to be pushed a bit harder to be offensive and make some better subs at better times and they'd have won.

He has finished 4th and 2nd in consecutive tournaments . Some of you guys need to get over yourselves. Yeah they had an easier draw, but they still got through and only gave up 2 goals. The fact that Kane has been largely useless makes it even more impressive.
