Moving up a salary grid is still a raise. Just because the salary grid doesn't change in a year doesn't mean you don't get a raise.

Are you telling me a City Engineer (who can't be unionized) hasn't got a raise in 4 years?

The article I linked states 14,000 people got raises...

If you get promoted, you should get a raise to compensate for the increase in responsibility, seniority, etc. If your salary is frozen, it means you do not get in-role / in-band salary increases. Moving up a salary band (we use 'levels') means increased expectations, contributions, responsibilities, etc., so that increase in remuneration is to compensate for that.

If you get promoted and it doesn't come with some sort of compensation increase... you didn't get promoted, you just got more work. Until early 2020, I used to work somewhere that such a thing happened on the regular, and rightfully every single one of them quit in short order, and found much better roles somewhere else.

I'm not talking about moving up on the salary grid. I'm talking about getting a promotion and changing job titles, for example an individual contributor being promoted to a leadership role or a manager being promoted to director.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm telling you. My wife is a non-unionized City employee. Her salary has remained 100% unchanged since January 1, 2017. It's the same story for every other non-union employee at the City unless they changed job titles to a more senior position during that time.

So 14,000 people got promotions last year? I know exactly 1 person who works at the city and they are not unionized and they have gotten multiple raises in that time. Are they getting slight change in titles with no change in job? Because their job hasn't changed significantly from what I have been informed.

There are about 16,000 employees at the city of Calgary and CPS according to my quick googling and 14,000 of those got raises last year...

Edit: Sorry should have been knew 1 person, he just moved last week after 4 years out east.

Of those 14,000, the vast majority were unionized staff who got a 1.5% increase in 2020 following 0% increases in 2018 and 2019. The only non-union staff who received any changed in salary whatsoever were those who were promoted to more senior roles. Every other non-unionized employee at the City has seen their salaries remain frozen to the same level it was at on January 1, 2017.

I highly doubt that.

Can't speak for the City, but more broadly exempt staff in public sector roles - anything from management, to a lot of analysts, to some work areas (it, hr, etc) - have been frozen for ever (I don't know the exact number of years off hand - let's go with at least 5, although I think its more). No grid movement, no salary increase, no inflation adjustment, no "you've worked here 5 years so you get more for seniority", etc.

I’m in a non-union role at the City - I haven’t gotten a raise since 2016, and no one I work with has either. Anyone that tells you different is full of it.

I know i am late to this conversation, just catching up, but living in Edgemont, I have talked with a number of my neighbours about this. Not a single one thinks this is a good idea. From what I can tell, the only benefit is to the people turning westbound onto JLB from 19th, Charleswood, and Brisebois. There has to be a better solution to this than installing three sets of lights along a free-flowing E-W corridor???

100% terrible move!

I'm not sure that lights on John Laurie will be the calamity that some fear. They'll be timed to be heavily in favour of traffic on JLB, with the occasional stop to let cars from 19th, Charleswood, and Brisebois out.

I like a nice free flowing road as much as the next guy, but I think that 95% of the time you'll cruise right through anyway.

I would also be in favour of the complete opposite approach: permanent right-in, right-out only. Take the t-bone possibility right out of the equation because, as we know, many drivers have poor timing and judgment.

John Laurie can be a bit of a race track at times. Adding lights allows the opportunity to add speed on green cameras.

John Laurie Blvd should be a prime candidate for overpasses in that area and eliminating level crossings, not lights and cameras.

There is nowhere near enough traffic on the collectors to justify hundreds of millions on overpasses. While I think it's fine as is, and wish people could learn how to turn left safely, traffic lights will be a fraction of the cost of overpasses and add no more than a few seconds to the average trip across that section.

If they are going to do it, they could at least pilot one intersecting and see how it works. It's not like there is cost savings to do all 3 at once.

To confirm, there are currently no plans to install lights at any of the intersections, let alone all 3. This was referenced in Erick's original post but it might be worth noting again:

https://www.calgary.ca/transportatio...storation.html

Quote:
- Are traffic signals being installed as part of this project?

This project does not include the installation of traffic signals.

Underground infrastructure for potential future traffic signals is being pre-installed at the Brisebois Drive, Charleswood Drive and 19 Street N.W. intersections to reduce future costs and impacts to the traveling public.

Traffic signals will be installed when warranted in the future after a detailed analysis is completed.

Not sure if this really belongs here, but George Chahal is running in the upcoming federal election in Calgary-Skyview and will be withdrawing his nomination papers in Ward 5.

Huge win for Justin Trudeau here as this will be one a very close race, and I'd expect Chahal to win. He's a rock star candidate and although the current Conservative MP won in 2019 by 24.2% in 2019, disgraced former Liberal MP Darshan Kang won it in 2015 by six points.

Huge ramifications for city council. It leaves Carra as the only left-wing incumbent running for re-election.

No! I loved him as my councillor. And the guy who will likely win in ward 5 now just seems shady to me.

Shoot, now I actually need to research who I’m voting for.

Ugh, after briefly looking at their websites, I don't like any of them. Maybe now that Chahal has withdrawn, someone better will step forward.

Edit to add: And Tariq Khan is listed as running in Ward 5, but his website is called "Elect Tariq Khan for Ward 3."

I voted for Tudor Dinca last time, and may again. I don’t know if he has the financial backing to really make a run. I haven’t looked at his platform this time around either, probably shoujd check for any crazy that’s popped up since last time.

Khan has registered for Ward 5 not long ago:
