Imagine how many people would be jumping down a posters throat if they tried to peddle Backlund for a sub 25 all-star? That is basically what you are doing with Schenn
Imagine trading a 23 year old who was out leading scorer at 22 and scored 34 goals and 77pts as a 21 year old for a 30 year old who scored more than 58pts once in his 10 year career and had 7 years with 6.5M per left.

You’re ignoring Kyrou.

Kyrou and the 2nd don’t make up the difference.
Is the deal Kyrou for Tkachuk straight up and the 2nd so we take on the boat anchor contract that is Schenn?
What we need to do is start pumping up a Backlund, Dube, 2nd package and start chasing 25 or younger superstars.

Schenn = Backlund

Blues 2nd = Calgary 2nd
That Calgary equivalent isn't enough to get a player like Tkachuk IMO. Blues need to kick in something substantial IMO. Another prospect (Neighbors) and then up the pick to this year's first.
Schenn, Kyrou, Neighbors, and 2021 1st rounder (16th over all) for Tkachuk and Calgary's 3rd rounder in this draft.

If you trade Tkachuk it needs to be for a similar aged core piece coming back, or a collection of younger pieces that have high end potential to become a core piece. More like the Hamilton deal than the Phaneuf deal.
Flames should not be getting significantly older in any deal including Tkachuk but feels like every proposal on here has the Flames taking back an older piece as the centerpiece of the deal.

Was literally just thinking the same thing. We need substance, not a bunch of magic beans.

Young star for young star deals are exceptionally rare. There has been maybe two in the last eight years. And as much as you, me, and a lot of fans on here want it to be true, it doesn’t look like this franchise is interested in retooling or rebuilding. I expected any deals over the summer to be made with the goal of improving the team over the next 2-3 seasons. After that Sutter and Treliving are likely gone.
If you asked me what deals I would try to make if I were the GM, you would get different proposals. What I’m offering is deals I think this management team, with its priorities and strategy, will likely make.

That's the reason I didn't immediately discount the deal. I think the basis is there for a good deal for both teams. They just need to massage it a bit. I think the Flames taking on Schenn is not a bad move. I think he could be the John Tonelli or Doug Risebrough that helps this team grow. I think he could be an exceptional leader for now and in the future. He also really solidifies the middle and allows the Flames to move Monahan without feeling a pinch. Most importantly, the Flames could grab some great young assets to really generate some critical mass in the near future. Kyrou fits in with the now group, while Neighbors and the 16th would fit in with the Zary, Pelletier, Kuznetsov, 2021 pick group. Frees up moving Monahan and/or Backlund in a secondary deal.

Brayden Schenn is one of the more toxic contracts in the league with where it likely goes in the next 7 years. Lucic bad
Tkachuk for Schenn + some decent meh is far worse than the Gaudreau for Voracek+ meh that was being promoted by a few last summer.
Rather lose Tkachuk for nothing in free agency than being stuck with Schenn

What about Tarasenko + 2nd for Monahan + 4th?

Isn't this discussion kind of moot? Tkachuk is going to walk away as a UFA.

After signing a qualifying offer in Calgary and playing another 2 seasons with the Flames?

He doesn't want to sign and the Flames will over value him resulting in no trade.

I’d take schenn over monahan and schenn is already resigned for what monahan currently makes. He’s signed until he’s 36 so it has some risks but to say it’s an anchor contract is a bit extreme. Your suggesting it’s lucic Neal bad of a deal.
Switch the 2nd to a first and it’s not bad. Some people need to realize Tkachuk contract is a bad one as well.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Wouldn't any team that wishes to acquire Tkachuk be scared off knowing he only wants to play for St. Louis? Does that mess with any possible return?
Also, because I enjoy chaos, its time to remind everyone that Treliving had talks with the Blues in 2018 when they were looking to deal Hamilton & Ferland and the return included Schenn & Parayko.

If there's one thing that's for sure, Tkachuk will maximize his salary after. He will likely sign the 1 year $9 mill QO, then go UFA at 25. This is the primary perk that he bargained for in his last.
The Tkachuk's are geniuses when it comes to getting the highest income possible. I can't say I blame them for it.
He's basically a UFA in two years, and he'll very likely demand a lot of money.
However, since he'll only be 25, there's not much reason to be afraid of term.

What leads you to believe that the Flames do not already know Tkachuk's wishes/desires in this regard?

Not the way he played last year. He won’t get 10M long term contract with that

|
Well Tarasenko’s injury history is the same injury over and over and it’s his shoulder which is a tough one for goal scorers.
I don’t know why we keep talking about this. No way in hell Tre trades for an oft injured highly priced soon to be 30yo left shot winger unless we are dumping Lucic on them and he comes cheap.
