Dube has so many defensive brain farts a game I can’t believe how many Flame fans willingly ignore it. He’s developing, and in no way has earned consistent top 6 ice time. That doesn’t mean Sutter doesn’t like him… he’ll be a solid Flame for a while.

I think Dube and Valimaki could be moved in "win now" trades but I don't see either moved for picks

I want the Flames to hang onto Dube, and I think they will. He’s young and learning. But he’s also got a very nice skillset, and he works extremely hard alongside Valimaki and Mangiapane. I can’t remember the number of times someone on the Fan960 said Dube, Valimaki and Mangiapane had stayed out late at practice for extra work, but it was a lot.

I think both Dube and Valimaki are of the personality where they take Sutter's message and become better players for it. I don't believe either would pout.
Also, you would think Valimaki's value hasn't increased and dube's isn't massive, so a trade now would be selling low. We probably value them more than anywhere else in the league.

If Darryl Sutter was the GM then yes I could see one or both moved but Brad Treliving is still the GM and these are his guys so I don't think either is going to be moved especially Valimaki who the organization has been very high on.

The Flames can't afford to move any youth. Seriously, they don't have the cap space, they don't have the prospects in development, and they don't have the picks. They need the young players on cheap contracts to keep the team afloat. What you see is what you have. Until they start peeling off the big salaries, nothing changes.

Win now? Yikes! Maybe scratch and win if we buy enough tickets.
This team needs a heart transplant before we can honestly expect them to contend for anything. This is a project team, not a few tweaks team.

Meaning currently proven nhl players, and not for scratch tickets (picks)

How do you get better players in exchange for the ones we have? By sweetening them with our almost non existent picks and prospects?
There is no win now strategy with this team unless 'the answer is in the dressing room' and Sutter can magically rehabilitate these guys at training camp.
Plus we probably lose one of our best defensemen and captain to Seattle, that we will not replace by using the cap space to get a FA. A younger Gio if such a beast were available would cost more than his current cap hit.

All the post you quoted is saying is: they don’t see those two being traded for picks over NHL players. That’s it.

They have 9 picks over the first 3 rounds the next 2 years.

Which are needed after squandering picks away from 2017-2019. Playing catch-up.
No 2nd/3rd in 2017
No 1st/2nd/3rd in 2018
No 2nd round in 2019
We need to keep these picks to restock the cupboard.

The Flames did not hire Darryl Sutter to rebuild, so I think they will make win now moves in the offseason
Note I am not saying what I would do, rather predicting what they will do.

It said that Tube and Valimaki could be used for win now trades.
Neither guy traded gets you a better player than what you have. Neither guy added as a sweetener in a bigger deal gets you substantially better players.
My main point is that a win now strategy for this team is crazy and probably unachievable.
It's a big rebuild project that should have started last year. Win now thinking just delays the inevitable.

Athletic and Hailey Salvian have Gaudreau as one of the summer blockbuster trades.
Along with Eichel, Jones, Kuznetsov, and Ekman-Larsson.
https://theathletic.com/2690216/2021...uld-be-traded/
"Treliving can’t simply roll the dice again... "
"...serious internal discussion about moving on from at least one core piece..."
"...shown little ability to elevate his game in critical moments — is that he has a limited no-trade ..."
"...flipping one of your steadiest point-producers just so you can say you’ve overhauled your core makes little sense"
Suggested Destinations: Islanders, Ducks, Devils, Flyers
Returns:
- Cap space and futures and add in Saad or Hoffman
- Konecny
- Gostisbehere
Burnside thinks that the Ducks most likely to trade for Gaudreau but thinks that the Flames are most likely to trade Monahan
Salvian thinks that Gaudreau is resigned and agrees that the Flames looking most likely to move Monahan. Dependent upon Gaudreau signing an extension before the MNTC.

And they need about double that to restock one of the worst development systems in the league. Having an extra pick and a half per draft is nothing to crow about, not when you look at our system and see massive holes everywhere. We need every one of those picks, and a lot more, to rebuild the system. Treliving considers trading any of those without getting equitable youth back, he should be shown the door.

Yup, you are exactly right - and he said he wants to finish what he left unfinished with this team.
Tweaks to the roster won't cut it. And Flames are too low on talent to add by subtraction.
The only way win now happens is Sutter coaching magic in the off season and training camp. But I am not sure that works anymore on these modern players.
Losing Gio to Seattle is a good catalyst for a rebuild. But I think BT should have got picks for him last year.
I want to see Flames active in the trade market and start addressing the systemic problems with this roster.

Who is "crowing" about anything?
You said they didnt have picks to make moves....they do.
Not that I expect them to do so, but if there is a deal that needs to be sealed with a pick this year or next, they do have ability without going pickless in any round.
Not the worst position to be in is all.

But they don't have picks to make moves, they simply just have picks like every other team. They are given those picks like every team and unlike the Flames most teams use those to keep building their system. The Flames have picks and they simply shouldn't trade them or the bleak future will look ever worse. If they had 6-7 extra picks over the next year or two they would have a surplus of picks to make moves...they don't. The way the team is trending, they will more likely trade picks and young players in "win now" moves.
Not the worst position to be in...but has to be in the bottom 5. Teams who are close to being serious contenders can afford to move picks because they have a young enough team and still have prospects. The Flames don't have a surplus of picks, are nowhere near being considered contenders and have a weak prospect pool. Trading picks and young players to win now would be a horrible move.

Was looking at Boston who could have a hole in the center spot as a potential trade partner.
What do the Flames need to add to the following deal?
Monahan + ? For Debrusk + Ritchie
I thought 2 for 1 could make sense but it looks like Ritchie finally started to put things together last year. 2 big body (albeit left shooting) wingers to play on the second or third line.
I know likely more changes come but the top 3 lines could be
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Backlund-Debrusk
Lucic-Dube-Ritchie
Outside of Gaudreau and Mangiapane the Flames would be big on the wings
