I think the strongest rumors are Jones to Philly over the last week or so. And I also don't think Jones is a good fit in CGY given his FA status and desire to test UFA market.

Defensively 5v5 the Flames may as well deploy the pk unit on the ice, at least they're built to defend 4v5.
He's a cherry picking liability defensively. Always too high to do anything and rarely blow the facoff dots waiting for the outlet.
Problem with that is, the rest of the line loses possession when down a line mate.

There are no objective metrics to back any of this up.

I dont care about what the stats say. They're wrong. I watched every game and save for maybe 4 or 5. It was always the same. Use your eyes and not other peoples numbers.

I've also watched every game for the last 5 years. I see differently.
Why is your conjecture or obviously obtuse statements like he's "always too high to do anything" any more valid when you can't back it up?

Gaudreau has good positioning and is excellent at getting the puck out of the zone when he gets it. That's half the battle of being good defensively for a winger. He's also quite good at intercepting and deflecting passes.
Like ya, he's not going to win much puck battles in the corner but you're just being ridiculous with these comments.

Don't need to back it up. It's all there for anybody to see. How people choose to see it varies.
Anyways. The idea that Gaudreau plays defense is funny.

Keep in mind, he's still under contract for one more season, so there's no huge rush to get this done before this year's free agency period.
If he does get traded this summer, I'd expect it to be to a team that he'd be willing to sign with long-term (and likely will before the season begins).

Thanks, I missed that he was still under contract for another season which makes it basically a nothing story.
I thought it was a similar situation with Dougie Hamilton were they are talking about trading him before the free agency deadline.
Are the players like Dougie not free agents as soon as the season ends?
I guess there is a sign and trade option.

Is he testing UFA market next summer because he doesn't like the direction his team is going? Will he test UFA market no matter where he goes? Perhaps he goes to a team that has a solid chance of competing for a couple of years, will he forego testing the market?

He’s probably trying to force the Blue Jackets hand by openly telling them he’s headed to UFA. A nicer way of asking to be dealt. I’m sure if a team trades for him and he likes the fit, he’d probably have no problem signing with that team.

I think that Jones just doesn't want to be on a rebuilding team and wants to have the option of an 8-year deal
It's also possible that Columbus is leaking this out there to start a bidding war for Jones

But your narrative goes to far in terms of Gaudreau - he indeed DOES go into the defensive zone, and you must have forgotten how he actually directly saved some goals.
Nobody is going to say that Monahan and Gaudreau are difficult to play against defensively. Nobody. They both need a lot of work. I think a huge reason for that is terrible coaching year-to-year. I am not sure if either one of them will be here next season, but I am betting that they both do better defensively next season under Sutter.
We, however, don't need to exaggerate on how bad they are defensively. But they are not McDavid levels of non-existent.

He’s probably the flames hardest backchecker.
Guy gets you a point a game as well. Unless you put him with a center that can’t skate and an AHL plug on RW.
Think you need to sniff around elsewhere for the flames biggest problem.

I am usually surprised by how much Gaudreau backchecks, but I'd definitely have Backlund and Lindholm ahead of him as hardest backchecker. Maybe Tkachuk and Mangiapane as well

Johnny tries hard is what I’m getting at and he is a good backchecker.
There are obvious things he can’t do because of his size. But he’s on the team to put up points. Not crash and bang.

I get it, Monahan disappointed this season.
He’s also the third all time GWG scorer at the tender age of 26. As well as the 7th all time goal scorer.
So let’s trade him for peanuts because one season proves more than his previous 7 right? There’s no way this, or last season for that matter, is the anomaly and once he laces up for his new team he’s back to being a 30g scorer. He’s done. Not even an NHL player. C’mon.
|
I believe he has more GWG than anyone in the league since 2013.

Back-checking is just one part of playing D. Johnny works hard to get the puck back when he doesn't have it. It's the rest of his defensive game that is lacking.

If there isn’t a good return for Monahan, I say keep him and put him on the wing. I think his game suits it much better.
