Let’s trade at all time low.

Just let him rebound, I think he’ll surprise his doubters next season.

Monahan probably isn't a first line centre, but he's way better than he was last season. I think if there were Vegas odds on such a thing, they'd be in favour of him rebounding. He's touched elite levels for periods of times too; I don't think you're finding much better value at his age for the skill level he brings consistently and has the potential to bring from time to time at a really high level for $6M a year. I'm pretty confident that he will be much better next year and for most seasons remaining in his career (no matter who he plays for) than he was last season.

He certainly hasn’t been consistently good the last few years, albeit due to health issues.

Monny will only be as good as his health allows him to be.

I don’t think we really know how this will play out.

I blame to coaching staffs more than anything for continuing to play him on the top line when injured, it totally stifled the top line, Sutter was the only coach to drop him down the lineup

Agreed. It actually showed, likely, that Johnny's dropped production was due to Monny. As soon as Monny was moved off his line, Johnny went largely back to normal.

Right, let’s trade all players for magic beans because…. We want change?

I get it, Monahan disappointed this season.

He’s also the third all time GWG scorer at the tender age of 26. As well as the 7th all time goal scorer.

So let’s trade him for peanuts because one season proves more than his previous 7 right? There’s no way this, or last season for that matter, is the anomaly and once he laces up for his new team he’s back to being a 30g scorer. He’s done. Not even an NHL player. C’mon.

I agree with everyone who says the Flames should retain Monahan if other teams won’t offer a fair return. Monahan’s value is low, but I think the Flames should be able to pull some real value from Carolina’s prospect system. Otherwise, it’s not worth doing.

The problem with Monahan is even when he’s playing well he’s was a one-dimensional player who doesn’t do most of the things expected of an NHL centre. He’s slow, poor defensively, does not distribute the puck well, does not come back deep to support the D, and does not even try to gain entry with possession.

NHL GMs do more than look at goal totals when evaluating a player, and even a healthy, bounce-back Monahan has a very limited toolset. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if his next team plays him at wing and treats him as a PP specialist.

Monahan may be slow but he’s not poor defensively - Sutter has commented on this. He plays position quite well. And when he doesn’t defer to Gaudreau, he passes the puck well.

Let’s just put this to bed:

Monahan isn’t poor defensively, he’s a trainwreck.... and it’s too large of a sample size to be caused by injuries.

Now do the rest of the team so we actually can see what those numbers are supposed to mean. Maybe while you're at it, do some other players. I'd be interested to see what McDavid and Draisaitl's numbers look like, seeing as they are obviously strong two way players.

I have no clue what that stat even is. And Monahan consistently played on a line with Gaudreau, who is a defensive liability and guys like Hudler, Ferland, Neal, Bennett, etc who were not great. The only good defensive forward to play with Monahan is Lindholm. Let's see his chart.

Who said anything about career highs? A return for several players to even career average production would make for a monumental improvement.

Why do you even bother? If the team makes you this miserable, perhaps you should quit and find new hobbies? This much constant cynicism cannot be healthy.

As a concept yes, how it actually measures, no. WAR is pretty much useless in hockey, and any comparison of player versus player shows this. You can look at well known defensive nightmares like McDrai and see this.

So you are telling me that Johnny Gaudreau is a better defensive player than Monahan. Which is why Sutter puts Gaudreau on PK all the time right?

Can't quote Neo.. but my takeaway is this:

Boy Monahan has sucked under terrible coaches.

Under Bob, he was a young and improving player. Every coach since and up until Sutter hasn't helped Monahan develop. Finally get a good coach again, and you see the uptick in Monahan's 2-way game.

I, for one, am really curious what Monahan's stats - his full stats, not just his offensive numbers - after this upcoming season. I bet it will look a lot better all-around.
