RHD Jake Martin,6'0"190lbs (USNTDP Juniors): 20gp/2g/4a/6pts. Defenseman who specializes in his defensive play, and in transition. Well developed defensive awareness, and highly polished positioning. "Martin shines in the defensive end of the ice, and is particularly adept at keeping play from the zone entirely with potent defending through the middle-third"-EPRinkside. High-level defending, snuffs out the opposing team's play, and turns defense into offense, or sends them back to square-one. His prowess in this area is top-5 in the draft, and his defensive tracking is the best in the USNTDP. He shows how vital good defense is to puck-possession, and therefore offense.

Many times, Martin will break up the rush in transition before it even enters the zone, but failing that, he will angle attackers to the boards, before sealing them off at the half-wall. Great gap control, and an active stick to consistently break up plays, and steal possession. Limits time and space, and is adept at denying entries, and breaking up the cycle. Applies suffocating pressure, active in front of his net, and boxes attackers out to low-danger. He's confident and poised under pressure, always making the right play with the puck. Minimizes the time spent defending, and facilitates more time on offense for his team-his advanced stats in this regard are sterling. He has many ways of separating man from puck-he battles hard in 1-on-1s, and fights for the puck along the boards, and in the corners. Fantastic PKer as well. Transition is the other main pillar of his game-he is efficient and accurate in his breakout passes, while still exhibiting poise and patience in evading forecheckers, and maintaining control for his team. Martin is one of the best in the draft at affecting controlled breakouts, but he also creates entries with his vision and passes-or by himself with his feet and puck control. He holds the line well, and keeps pucks alive. Even when playing in the offensive zone, he is still keeping track of his defensive responsibilties-he doesn't stray too far into the zone, and is always ready for when and if the puck comes back the other way. He reads the play very well in all three zones, and has the innate ability to know where the puck is going. His passing, shooting, and stickhandling are all above-average-perhaps indicating that he's got much more to give offensively.

Martin has fluid mobility, with good agility and edges, but he needs to add an extra gear or two to win more footraces to pucks. His basic mechanics need polishing, but he'll be a lot faster as he gets stronger. It is believed that as his mobility improves, so will his offensive game, as he already has a solid base of skills. He has a pretty high floor, as he could conceivably grow into a bottom-pairing, shutdown defender-but if developed properly, he could add enough of a dimension to his game to be a top-4 puck-mover. 3rd/4th round.

RW/LW Ilya Fedotov,6'1"176lbs (Chaika Nizhny Novgorod,MHL): 54gp/18g/20a/38pts,28PIM, 4th in MHL scoring for players under 18. Offensive-minded, top-flight talent with the potential to amaze and delight every time he has the puck on his stick. Bit more of a scorer than playmaker, but pretty balanced.

Fedotov has one of the best shooting arsenals in the draft-both his wrister and slapper have power, and accuracy. His scoring ability is second to none. He will go the net, either making plays in tight, or setting up for high-danger passes, rebounds, or tip-ins. He also anticipates the play very nicely, and is still quite creative, with good playmaking sense, and crisp, accurate passing. He has high-end offensive instincts, with good work-ethic, and a high motor to go with it. Unlike many of his young Russian counterparts, he still affects the play without the puck on his stick, and is always looking to find open space to make himself an option. He looks pretty useful on the backcheck-he battles for possession along the boards, and in the corners, working to break up rushes, and snuff out the cycle. Exhibits good positioning to box out attackers, and recover turnovers-he has no problem rubbing out an opponent along the wall either. He has a good stick to break up lanes, and pick off passes-and once he does, he's fully capable of dishing a nice breakout pass. Fedotov has a physical side when he needs to separate an opponent from the puck, or when he's confronted-he competes well in the dirty areas, and in front of the net. He displays good puck control in these areas, as well as when he's slashing through traffic. High compete.

I've noticed, in regards to his skating, that he has a nice top-speed in situations where there's a loose puck, a scoring chance, or an opportunity to beat a defenceman wide. In those instances, his legs extend further, his stride gets longer and more powerful, and posture gets lower to maximize energy-all generating a very good top speed, and the ability to slash through traffic. Many times during a game, he's coasting while waiting for the play to develop, which can happen on the bigger ice-but then he has a second gear that's short and choppy with an upright torso, and not much power. All in all, I think he needs better lower-body strength to develop better first-step quickness, and more overall explosiveness, but he's a good skater, albeit inconsistent. Needs work on his upper-body strength as well, and his conditioning. Fedotov may have increased his allure, had he been able to crack any of Russia's National Teams in the last few years, but he's come a long way-though scouts will consider that to be a huge negative. Fedotov is a prime breakout candidate for the team willing to spend a pick on him, as he could develop into a dominant force-he's got the toolkit to be a top-6 winger in the NHL. He's ranked 69th by MacKenzie.

Interesting. I appreciate all the data. Assuming the data is correct because my opinion is worthless, Cole Sillinger doesn’t seem to help his teams regain or possess the puck or with playmaking. However, Sillinger still has a lot of skill. Otherwise, he couldn’t score so much, and I think you can teach an intelligent player with a lot of skill to help the team in the other 2/3rds of the ice. So, I'm okay with the Flames taking Sillinger even if all this data is correct because Wheeler says Sillinger possesses a skill set that is impossible to teach and intelligence to improve his game in teachable areas.

What kind of point totals do you project for him?

Yes, these seems to be the takeaways. Another thing to note is that many of the hesitations on Sillinger were non-existent last year. His play was more even when he was with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Another thing with Sillinger is that non of his line mates this year were very elite. He practically doubled the production of anyone else on his team. That could explain part of the "selfishness" and lack of high danger passing.

According to this the Blackhawks may take Wallstedt or Cossa with their pick.

https://theathletic.com/2686203/2021...shared_article

Quote:
The Blackhawks are narrowing their draft target with the 11th overall pick. They believe there could be six or seven viable options available to them based on their projections of whom the teams ahead of them could draft.

The Blackhawks are set on taking the best available player at 11, and that could very well be a goalie. While they do like Drew Commesso, whom they drafted in the second round last year, selecting one of the two best goalies available this year may be too great to pass up.

I obviously really like Sillinger, but stuff like this worries me a little. Obviously it's great that he already takes his training seriously, but how much of his success can be attributed to being in better shape/stronger than the majority of his competition?
From what I've seen, he's able to use his strength to get into the middle of the ice/get past defenders, but obviously that's going to be a lot more difficult against NHL players.

Yep, the "selfishness" this past season seems like it probably stems from playing with lesser talent.
I would still rather see him try to build up his teammates rather than just ignoring them and doing it all himself though.

True, we don't need another Sam Bennett.

Good points about Sillinger though and I suspect these are reasons he isn't in the top 5.

He's a bad floater from what I watched on highlights. Also has a penchant for waiting for the puck to get to him instead of going to meet it.

Yeah he can shoot the Dickens out of the puck but of all the guys in the Flames range his negatives are big big negatives comparable to guys like Lucius or Lysell or McTavish, Johnson etc etc.

I'm fine if they take Sillinger but to me he has the biggest buyer beware sticker of em all. Like I dont even like advanced stats but if you're ranking below defensemen in important offensive percentages, that's horrible.

Like if we are talking risky players, He seems way more risky at 12 than a guy like Raty.

So here's Scouchings take on Raty:

Raty's stats nuggets trend much better than Sillingers, no red flags there. The issue with Raty seems to be confidence and maturity. Not Laine levels of GAF. But more I think just second guessing and being in his head a lot. Compare that to Sillinger who just has some major flaws in the fundamentals of the game itself.

If you can get him out of his head I think you have a play driving 1st line center. Someone like Sutter I think can do this.

Raty isn't my pick of the litter for the Flames but I've been absolutely convinced this is the name we will hear when tree gets to the mic. I can't shake it and haven't been able to for 3 months now.

I would be ok with Raty. His dip in production has as much to do with the coach and team he plays for as it does with his confidence, or whatever else is going on between his ears. Low risk/high reward IMO.

Default 2021 NHL Draft

This is such a unique draft. For the last two years, we’ve all been told that this draft isn’t very good when compared to the recent previous ones and the next two drafts after it are considered much better than this one as well.

Yet, it’s funny how perspectives change - at least amongst media and fans - as we get closer to the draft. And this happens every year. Every single player taken in the first round is compared to star players in the NHL - even so far as to be projected to be just like that player. For example, if he has a good two-way game… sportsnet says he’s comparable to Bergeron - the best two way player of the last decade.

Yet only a fraction of them ever reach that potential and fewer still exceed it. For a draft that was considered to be weak… people are now talking about future first line centermen being available with picks outside the top ten. I know it’s hard to project players this young - especially after the last 2 years - but it always feels like draft picks are coveted even more during this time of year. 2 months later, that same player having been drafted at 12th overall probably wouldn’t get you a pick in the top 20 to 30 of the next draft - and that goes for any year.

Curious that a player like Zary, who most thought would go in the top 10 to 15 in the 2020 draft, is considered a lesser skilled prospect now than a guy like Sillinger who is projected to go in this draft around the same spot as Zary was projected last year. Even though this is considered a weaker draft and last year’s was considered a strong, deep draft.

LHD Artyom Kulakov,6'2"201lbs (Omskie Yastreby,MHL): 29gp/4g/8a/12pts,39PIM. AK was committed to joining the Erie Otters for this season (2nd round, 82nd overall in the 2020 CHL Import Draft), but Covid put the kibosh on that. He's a solid defensive defenseman, but I don't think enough credit is given to his offensive game-his 12pts in 29 MHL games is 3rd for defensemen under 18 in p/gp. Solid, all-around skater with good acceleration and decent edges, agility, and balance. His positioning is solid in all 3 zones, but he leans to playing a defense-first style. He's solid and dependable, and doesn't make many mistakes in his own zone-smart, and calculated with his stick, he breaks up passes on the rush, and doesn't gets deked or fooled. Keeps passing lanes blocked on the cycle, and protects his goalie by tying up sticks and playing physically. He defends his blueline very well, and is adept at denying entries. In the other end of the rink, he reads the play very well, and contributes without risking anything defensively. He knows when to pinch in the zone to create opportunities, or keep pucks alive, without the risk of giving up chances against-and he knows when to retreat to snuff out the rush. One of his specialties is his creative breakout passes that he gets to his forwards in stride, which enable the transition. AK plays very much on the safer side, which makes him a defensive stalwart, but eats into his offensive numbers. Make no mistake though, there's more offense here if he can round out his game. Despite being a good skater, he needs to add another gear, and a better top-speed. Look for him in the later rounds.

RHD Daniil Sobolev,6'0"198lbs (MHK Spartak Moskva,MHL) 2019-20: 48gp/2g/4a/6pts,47PIM. Did not play this year, as he was committed to play for Windsor of the OHL, but was a very noticeable presence as a 16/17 year-old in the MHL. Sobolev has a well-rounded game-he's good at everything, perhaps not elite, but he's the kind of heart-and-soul player you win with. Terrific skater and stickhandler, he can get up to top-speed almost instantly, and has good edges and agility. He's become bigger than the 5'10"154lbs that he's usually listed at.

Good hockey sense and composure, he's slick and shifty. Excellent vision, and shows good offensive awareness-he also flashes game-breaking skill, and a highly advanced offensive game. Excellent passing game, and exhibits good puck distribution, and reception. Makes beautiful outlet passes while still evading the incoming forecheck, which facilitates the team's transition. Often initiates zone-entry, pushing the play forward with his puck-moving ability, or by leading the attack himself. He has a fine array of passes he can use, including a nice saucer off his backhand. He's also got a very hard, heavy shot.

Maybe best of all of his attributes is his heart and grit. He sacrifices his body for the team to make plays-he blocks shots regularly, and plays a hard, heavy game. Does whatever it takes to win. Forces opponents to the boards, often rubbing them out. Battles hard to protect his goalie, clears the crease, and sticks up for teammates. He's built like a tank, and hits like a truck-he's ultra-aggressive, battles hard in the trenches, and isn't afraid to play the role of agitator. He's a rock in his zone, and his offensive numbers take a back seat to his defensive responsibility. Keeps good gaps, and works hard in 50/50 confrontations.

With Sobolev, he has an offensive game that just needs time to grow-we may have seen some good numbers this year out of him if the OHL was playing, as he has a full toolkit. There are times when he takes himself out of the play, looking for a big hit, so he'll need to be taught when to go, and when to wait. He has a solid, thick build, but needs to get stronger to survive at the next level, and win more puck battles-he can still get pushed off the puck by larger players. Sobolev projects as a solid, 2nd pairing fan-favorite-his game is somewhat reminicent of Darius Kasparaitus. 3rd/4th round.
