When is that? 3 years ago?
Oh there is that one other thing too...he is UFA after this season and if they dont sign him...he walks for absolutely no return if he wants.
Are you willing to risk that?

Yeah Johnnys NTC is a one of a kind too. Only 5 teams he can be dealt to of his choosing. That really puts the pressure on to get things done in this time frame.

Oh I’m all for trading him if he won’t sign. But as it stands he is our best forward. The offence would dry up if he was gone. Nobody else on the Flames comes close to the skill set he has. I just hope they can re sign him.

This Montreal run is lightening in a bottle type stuff. I wouldn’t be surprised if they missed playoffs next season.
Also, the Kings aren’t one star player away from being a contender. They were 25th in the league and only one point better than Detroit. No UFA is doing that. I don’t even think Eichel does that for them.
|
I agree they needed more than 1 star from lasts years team. But if they add a star this summer they aren’t just adding 1 star. They added arvidsson already and a couple potential impact rookies. They might be adding 1 star and 3 really good players. They also could add a goalie too.
Very unlikely they are a contender next year but to say no chance for 2 or 3 years is ridiculous. It’s very possible to happen sooner

I just don’t see it. I disagree with the premise that “they are very close to being a contender”. They are very far away from being a contender. For that to happen they need a lot to go right

Their prospect pool is unrivalled - and a number of them have already spent some time developing (so they aren’t being rushed), and this is a young player’s league. Add in championship winning veterans in Doughty, Brown, and Kopitar, and that ship is heading in the right direction fast.
It’s a beautiful thing when an organization makes clear decisions and commit to a plan. They won Championships, and then chased that dream likely a year or two too long - but when they pivoted, they did it right and now their veterans that will help develop their next wave of top end talent are already in place and they don’t need to mess around with the lunacy of overpaying veterans who contributed to championship teams in years gone by to help develop a culture worth while.

Yep on the right track I agree, but not close to contending. They were one of the very worst teams in the league last year with Kopitar, Brown, and Doughty and those guys aren’t getting any better.
Nobody should be picking LA to win anything next year let alone be a contender

They are every bit as bad as the Hawks were in 2006-07
Added Toews and Kane and Brian Campbell and Byfuglien to Keith, Havlat, Seabrook and Sharpe
2007-08 40-34-8
2008-09 add Hjalmarson, Ladd, Brouwer, Versteeg, Bolland... beat the Flames in 6 then the Can####s in 6 and lost to Detroit in 5.
The guys that they were adding (expect Kane) were already in the organization drafted in 2003 - 2005 that put out a crappy team in 2007.
Maybe not a contender but pretty good looking as a bubble team in the Pacific.
The Pacific sheds it's reputation as the weak division putting 3 out of 8 into the playoffs. Vegas, Seattle, LA Edmonton Vancouver, Calgary with Ana and SJ as the only weak teams.

So, the Central puts 5 in the playoffs, taking 3 of the 4 wild card teams.
It’s much easier being a wild card team in the Pacific due to so many games within your division. If they only place 1 wild card team, they must be truly horrific.
Vegas is the only truly very good team there.
Only 2 of those teams made the playoffs this year, and that’s with 4 of them playing in the Canadian division.

Arvidsson is okay but this trade doesn't really move the needle for a Kings team that still isn't very good. They may be prospect darlings but that doesn't always translate into success. Improvement is difficult when their top players are all in their 30's and declining. I suppose if guys like Vilarde and Kempe take massive steps forward they could hang around in the playoff race in what's by far the worst division in hockey.

The playoff qualifying format hasn't been determined yet.
One scenario may not even guarantee 3 teams per division - you only get 3-4 games against divisional oppts and 3 against the other div. in the conference.
Or straight divisional playoffs; 4vs div; 2vs everyone else; 6 games for special scheduling (whatever that means).
Bettman doesn't like it, but it's not inconceivable that they add a play-in round of some sort.
5v4 divisional would be the best IMO, but I'd be open to the NBA's model, too. A few ways that could go:
5v5 - loser out, winner plays loser of:
4v4 - (winner in)
But it would be a bit complicated which division the final 2 slots end up playing in.
I say go crazy and do each division:
3v4; winner in; loser plays winner of:
6v5

The Kings won’t be adding a Toews or Kane next year let alone both.
Byfield is very raw and Turcotte is being surpassed by guys picked below him

You guys so easily forget that JG cannot get it done in the playoffs. We have watched him disappear as soon as it get tough and yet you want to keep him. If your goal is to win the Stanley Cup then you need to move on JG and get what you can for him. Over the years we have seen Tampa win the cup, reload and win again, LA are now in the process and are looking good, it’s extremely frustrating watching good team do the right thing while Calgary just hangs onto players and does not a lot.

Relative to who? Marner and Matthews can't get it done in the playoffs. McDavid was pretty well a no-show against the Jets. Playoffs are such a small sample size and I think it's pretty shortsighted to overly focus on what happens in a random best of 7 series. The Flames issue is that largely the entire roster has difficulty in the playoffs and part of that is coaching, part leadership, and partly the players for not being able to elevate their games. There hasn't been a Flames team since 2004 that's bought into doing what it takes to win in the playoffs as their issues are deeper than Johnny Gaudreau.

Slightly OT but I wandered to a couple Maple Leafs sites and they were complaining about Marner doing his “typical cross the blue line and button hook”. It was like déjà vu all over again.
