Even though signing him doesn't make a lot of sense for the Flames, I would do this deal in heartbeat.

And that probably means a team that actually needs him will give him more.

Sure, but only if Danault will actually sign that here.

Danault in, Backlund/Monahan out would be fine with me.

Like i said though, i can see BT making a side deal to make sure Francis doesnt take him and i can also see a scenario where Gio decides he would rather retire than move the whole family to Seattle for what would likely amount to 7 months. Letting Francis know that through his agent and being therefore allowed to stay "home" for one last year.
No reason to move his family when it will only be 7 months and he'll be on the road half the time anyways.

He can come back during Xmas and presumably Olympic break; they can come visit him a few times...maybe 25% time together instead of 55%.

andersson getting so much time on the pp looks like the flames trying to pump him up after signing him to a huge contract that he didn't earn.

Always remember, i know its hard, that andersson is older by 3 months than hanifin.

Also there might be a chance that valimaki has been humbled enough to get his work ethic back. Being the best player in the finnish echl equivalent league messed up his head.

I'd call Gio's bluff on this for sure. 7 months in Seattle would not be that hard to take.

Hard to say if Seattle would take Gio, they may see value in obtaining a him and then flipping him at a later point for what I would think is at least a 2nd rounder. Why not leave tanev exposed? For the next season I would still rather have Gio over tanev, he may be older, but still a more well rounded d man. The flames may very well not even make the playoffs next year, and this is an asset you can flip for a draft pick come TDL.

Tanev has more hockey left and was the Flames most reliable defenseman last season. Teams don't improve by letting another divisional opponent pick up their best defenseman. The Flames may miss the playoffs next season but Sutter/Treliving will be trying to make the playoffs at all costs.

I'm not sure Seattle selects Tanev.

I am 95% sure they select Gio.

Tanev was really good last year, defensively. However, brings nothing offensively, has dealt with injuries his whole career (Last year was his most games played % wise)

I would almost rather have Seattle take Tanev, be out from his contract (which I don't think will age well)- and next year have 11.5 million free (and maybe Gio TDL assets) to build a new D around Hanifin and Andersson.

That being said Tanev is 100% a Sutter guy to I actually expect Hanifin to be dealt and both protected

I'm 95% sure they'd take Tanev, but only 50% they'll take Gio.

Tanev would be an ideal partner for one of the many young D-men they will have.

They can make better use of their cap space than Gio, IMO.

No one knows anything about how he feels about being away from his family. So calling it a "bluff" is ridiculous.

Maybe it wont bother him, maybe there is no chance he leaves his wife for that long alone with children. I certainly understand both sides of that coin.

Also, there is little chance Seattle is anymore a SC contender than Calgary, so any incentive that way doesnt exist.

Francis as a long time player like Gio, certainly would also have the understanding of not wanting to move if such a move isn't wanted.

all this is just speculation though.

My guess is that Gio makes it known he would rather not go, BT makes a small side deal with Francis to not select him and Seattle takes someone else.

It’s so rare for a player to retire instead reporting that it isn’t even worth think about IMO unless Gio were to indicate otherwise.

I still say leave him exposed and see what happens. It has the potential to be a wasted selection due to the fact he is declining and may not be worth more at the trade deadline than a different player they can select instead.

100% that there will be a decision on what to do with him.

How would we know this without knowing which players declared as such?

It makes no sense that fans of this team want to hand out big money long term deals for players who average .5ppg and will be over 30 for 80% of the contract. All we heard this year on this forum is how the Flames do not have enough high end talent so it makes no sense to me we would spend valuable cap space on another middle 6 player.

Every time we get an Eichel update it seems like interested teams are losing that interest. Dreger on Buffalo radio downplaying the Ducks interest in Eichel which follows the Rangers, Kings, Wild, and Jackets who were all rumored to be interested heavily but not so much anymore

The Sabres likely set the price excessively high, which is understandable. Now that nobody will meet their initial ask, they’ll likely circle back around with more reasonable offers. The Sabres are the motivated seller here. The GMs of the Rangers, Ducks, etc don’t have guns to their heads to make a monster trade.

Agreed and couple that with the injury concerns it puts the Sabres in a really tough spot.

Read on the Bleacher Report the Sabres want the equivalent of 4 1st rounders which IMO the Tkachuk, Zary, 1st package accomplishes.

Honestly, Sabres are best to wait it out until they get a great offer like Avs did with Duchene. Sakic took a lot of heat while he wasn't trading Duchene but the end result was worth it

After this season, Eichel's full-NMC kicks in.

From what Friedman has says, Buffalo wants to get this dealt with so they can move forward.

As someone who absolutely hated the Tanev signing and was praying Seattle would take his horrible contract off our hands, there is absolutely no way we can expose him after the dominant season he had.

He was by far our best defenseman and very possibly the best defensive defenseman in the entire NHL.

He dominated every time he was on the ice and that was despite playing with broken ribs and a torn pectoral for the last months of the season.

Based on the horrible division they're in and with a full season of Darryl Sutter behind the bench, there's actually a better chance the Flames get home ice advantage in the first round of the Playoffs rather than missing the Playoffs altogether.
