2004 springs to mind.

-Vancouver uses three goalies/Naslund not the same after Moore hit/no Bertuzzi

-Yzerman gets shot in the eye, completely demoralizing the Wings for at least a game.

-4-2 in OT.

-Our 2nd best natural centre was Yelle

-Our #2C was a winger

-we had the co-Rocket Richard winner, and not a single other player scored 20 goals or 50 points

-We stole a Vezina-winning goalie from the Sharks.

Horseshoes, I tell ya.

All that work just to hit the Tampa wall in the finals.

Habs have any magic left or has their deal with the devil expired?

while all true (although some of this is more fluke than luck if that makes sense), there were some arrows the other way (and not just the fact that it was in ). Injuries to Reinprecht, McAmmond, Lydman, Gauthier, later Lombardi, whereas that year (and playoffs) the Lightning were one of the healthiest teams (or fewest games lost to injury) that you could imagine

at least at the time (I haven't tracked it since) I believe the Flames were the first team to outscore their opponents in the finals and lose...not to mention the reffing in game 4...argh!!!

He will be fine for the rest of playoffs, but require surgery in early October and need 6 months to recover.

Exactly six months… unless Tampa has a few long term injuries that free up some cap space mid-season. Then he’ll have a miraculous recovery that brings him into the line up early.

I'm on board with this also. Pretty good chance they give everyone an extension and go full Oiler after the 2006 run? 2006?

Game 1 I was one goal off!

I think Game 2 goes to overtime and Montreal win 3-2

And the Avalanche softened up the Sharks in round 2 in 2004.

Depending upon a possible division realignment, the Flames will playing the weakest division while the Habs will play in a substantially stronger division.

I’m not sure what the point is

Regular season, Montreal isn’t supposed to make the playoffs. They do
Round 1, not supposed to even competitive with Toronto. They win
Round 2, not supposed to beat Wpg. They do
Round 3, they got lucky because the North sucks, no way will they beat a real team like Vegas. They do

Even if TB wins. Montreal has at this point accomplished what 29 teams didn’t. Only two teams get to play for the Cup. They are one of them. That is successful.

Maybe as a result of capturing lightning in a bottle. Who cares?

Literally nobody here is saying anything along the lines that Montreal is a top team and will be year in and year out.

If Montreal actually finds a way to win the Cup, they will be the champions. The result that matters most in any NHL season.

So you keep saying “Let’s see how they do next round” until you run out of rounds and then switch the goalpost to “Oh yeah, we’ll let’s see how they do next season”?

Who cares? I mean even if they win, then are strong next season, you can rinse and repeat. Unless they keep winning in perpetuity, I guess at some point eventually you will be right, so that’ll be nice

True. A big non-luck factor that the flames had at the time though was they had… for that period of time the best player on the planet in Jarome Iginla. Media love to throw that “best player/best goalie on the planet” title around a lot these days. I think the flames had that in Iggy during that run. Iginla was as close to unstoppable as it got in the playoffs of the dead puck era. The flames aggressive style of forecheck and defence worked because whenever iggy was on the ice, he could create something - goals, points, scoring chances, hits, fights. To this day I have not seen anything like it in the playoffs since. McKinnon is a close comparison but less physicality of course.

I wish we had a young Iginla in the same era as Monahan and Gaudreau. Imagine a Gaudreau-Monahan-Iginla line and Iginla with his one-timer on the PP.

Young Iggy was able to score fifty goals in the deadest of the dead puck era with little to no equivalent talent on his line. He could easily crush 60 goals with Gaudreau feeding him.

Not to mention the beatings young Iginla would lay on guys who tried to take liberties with Gaudreau. Iggy had a temper on the ice (even more so when he was younger) and getting him mad was the worst thing an opposing team could do. So teams would not want to get Iggy mad… so they might avoid going after Johnny. Which would mean more space for Gaudreau… which is the worst thing and opposing team can do against him. It would be a glorious combination.

As skilled as Gaudreau and Monahan are, I dont think Iginla would've produced as much as he did with softer players.

He was out there with hard nosed linemen who would werent afraid of the opposing lines and grinded out with them. Conroy and the interchangable winger fought those hard battles along the boards so that Iginla could do his thing

Lindholm would have been a great centre for Iggy. Similar to Conroy defensively, only more skilled. I think Tkachuk would work out well also. Though Gaudreau could probably make it work. Hell, Mangiapane or Dube would fit in on the left side.

I don’t think people would take the liberties they have with Johnny if Iggy was out there
