They will study which Indigenous person to name it after. Haysboro was Harry Hays. You wouldn't want to have to rename the school again in a few years.

Cancel Canada Day?

Quote:
There are growing calls across the country to cancel Canada Day celebrations this year, in the wake of recent discoveries of almost 1,000 graves at residential schools in Canada.

Under the slogan of #CancelCanadaDay, a number of rallies are being organized in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba on Wednesday, July 1, in solidarity with the Indigenous community.

The previous month has seen the discovery of hundreds of unmarked children’s graves at the site of former Canadian Indian Residential Schools; 215 at Kamloops Indian Residential School and 751 at Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. At each discovery the phrase “Cancel Canada Day” soon trended on social media. Nevertheless, a mere 14 per cent of Canadians polled favoured an abolition of the July 1 holiday, which marks Canada’s 1867 confederation as an independent country.

All things considered, this is pretty minor to hundreds of dead children, but this is idiotic. Good to see no one actually agrees with it.

Nenshi has said Calgary will have fireworks but they're not celebration fireworks. They're to honour indigenous people.

It's almost like Twitter isn't the 'voice of the people' that it thinks it is or something...

Stuff like canceling Canada Day is just overreaching and causes people to hate activists.

Agree on this. Stupid to put people and other property (grass fire season) at risk

I don't mind seeing the blood red hands painted on these churches though.

Cancelling it permanently or for one year?

I actually don't see a problem with taking a year off to acknowledge how horrendously Canada has treated the Indigenous population through out history.

I struggle to see the down side.

The Church's structures, God won't protect the structures.

I always find it humorous that Churches take out insurance, I mean isn't Sky Daddy the ultimate all powerful Insurance.

Sounds like forever to me. If you're living on stolen land, you're living on stolen land... not just for one year.

If only there were some sort of national holiday coming up that we could use as a jumping off point to increase awareness of indigenous people in Canada. Perhaps a holiday that is tied to our Canadian heritage and centred on what it means to be Canadian, one where we could celebrate the contributions and sacrifices of the indigenous people of Canada.

No such holiday exists? Oh, well, that sucks. I guess we'll just have to move on and forget about this news story.

June 21 has been recognized and honoured, name changed, everything short of making it a stat holiday. Why?

Totally agree. Canada Day is an appropriate day to have some somber reflection, especially this year. If it helps just a little with building trust and reconciliation, then it is time well spent.

IDK. I'm not in favour of a piecemeal approach to reconciliation. Gestures here and there aren't going to help. Is there anything we can do as non-Indigenous Canadians to reconcile the past and move forward with the majority of First Nations in a way that FN people generally agree is reasonable?

So we cancel Canada Day, is everyone happy now? Of course not.

We acknowledge the land we occupy before school assemblies and office tower meetings, is that enough? No, and it shouldn't be.

I need to see a road map that we can all agree to that says if we do X, Y and Z we'll have paid our dues, we will be forgiven, and we can move forward and start healing from the shame. I don't want my grandkids still atoning for this. I'd like to take care of it now, so just need to know what to do. I'm not behind token gestures for the rest of my life based on what the Twittersphere says we need to be doing. This'll get ridiculous and we'll all end up bitter if that's what we do.

I suspect that some people would argue that you're making the perfect the enemy of the good there, and that by setting an impossible goal (solve everything all in one fell swoop) you're ensuring nothing gets done at all.

I’ve only heard of Canada Day cancellations for one year but I’m sure there are (ridiculous) calls for a permanent cancellation. That sort of thing never seems to go away. For example, the call to change the names of sports teams may lessen for a time but it resurrects over and over again. We may see calls every June to permanently cancel Canada Day unless we do meaningful reconciliation.

Nah, good works for me...doesn't need to be perfect. I just would like there to be a conclusion to this. Even it's on a 50-year timeline or something. But, yes, if no matter what we do it's not good enough, then let's do nothing and save ourselves the self-flogging and lots of money.

I waaaaaaaay prefer we do what we can to right this wrong, but for me that requires concrete and realistic steps on a finite timeline with mutually agreed upon targets.

Who is we? I don't like this grouping. You as a white guy have as much to do with this as me, which is nothing. It's something that happened 100 years ago.

Should the government apologize, yes. Should the church apologize, yes. But why are ordinary white people in their 20s and 30s apologizing and feeling guilty for something that happened in 1880? People on twitter (i know i know) are posting that they feel ashamed of the land they stand on, i fear they are going to off themselves (they're not)
