Icon45 Leafs re-sign Simmonds (2 yrs, $900k AAV)

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Wayne Simmonds signs a two-year extension with the #leafs carrying a $900,000 AAV.

Played solid hockey in the bottom 6 for them and 2 years at under a mill AAV is not a problem at all for Simmonds. He might even improve on last years numbers because his contract situation is taken care of for a few years now.

Like that deal for the leafs. Solid player even if he isn't as good as he was for that amount is a no-brainer to me.

OK deal, though pretty early in the off season to be signing that level of player. I suppose their top 6 is pretty set though. I wonder if they will try to sign a bunch of bottom 6ers and then tell Hyman “this is how much we have left”.

This puts them at $70M with 7 UFAs and one RFA to re-sign or replace. Hyman, Galchenyuk, Foligno, Hutton, Bogosian, Dermott, Andersen (I’m assuming Thornton and Nash are gone).

I imagine they will replace Andersen, but they will feel pressure to sign Foligno after spending so much to get him. And Bogosian may have played his way into a decent contract.

I wonder if they let go of Andersen and keep Rittich.

Meh. He was amazing before he broke his wrist but after he came back from his injury he just didn't have it.

Andersen Hyman Foligno are gone for sure. If they can get Bogo to sign a cheap contract again he would be welcomed back big-time. Gally has looked like crap for every team except for the Leafs. I hope they bring him back on a one-year show me deal for cheap. I hope they keep Dermott but he might be taken by the Kraken. Other than that I have no clue what will happen with this team.

I like this deal for the Flames.

... Meaning now the Flames won't be looking to sign him.

This will help them meet the veteran exposure requirement for the expansion draft.

For the expansion draft, you are required to expose 2 forwards and 1 defenceman who are under contract for 2021-22 who played in 27 or more NHL games last season, or played in 54 or more NHL games in the last two seasons.

With this signing and the Spezza signing a couple of weeks ago, they now have 2 forwards who can meet the exposure requirement and allow them to protect Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, and Engvall. Prior to these signings, those were the only 6 forwards who met the requirement for the Leafs.

----------

This is the same reason we'll likely see the Flames sign either Ryan or Ritchie to a contract extension sometime in the next couple of weeks. Otherwise, they'll need to expose Backlund (most likely).

There's no way they are keeping Andersen, he's long gone.

No doubt about that. But they are also not keeping Rittich.

Only a leafs fan would ‘meh’ a veteran taking league minimum to ensure the stars stay together.

I think League minimum is $750K next year.

$150K veteran increment is fair. And Simmons is a better player than league minimum. 2 years at that price is a pretty fair deal. He could have gotten a little more elsewhere but only on a one year deal I bet.

Such a low risk signing for the leafs here even with the additional year.
