You only build around Tkachuk if you can sign him to a fair long term contract after this season before giving him 1 year at 9 mill. If he won't do that he doesn't want to be here and then you trade him for something that helps the team now and in the future.

By the way, I'm not trashing Tkachuk for this. If anything, most of us are probably agree with him. The player who told him to calm down is the one at fault.
But I'm just saying that it's a potential reason for his discontent. Just speculation of course.
|
Just for the sake of accuracy, what Friedman says in that clip is that after the "puck-flipping" incident the players held a meeting and Tkachuk felt confused by mixed-messages he was receiving. To be clear, here, we don't know what was said, nor by whom or why specifically.
I am not ready to side with anyone without knowing what actually happened and why. There are dozens of ways to spin a "players meeting which made Tkachuk upset and confused."

I can't imagine a realistic situation where Buffalo includes its 1OA in a trade involving Eichel.
Certainly not for 1 year of Johnny and 2 years of Tkachuk.
Your value isn't terrible, jits ust not what Buffalo wants. If they moved those two pieces in a singular trade, they would need to be getting back as spectacular piece to headline the trade. And I mean a piece who's trade value exceeds Eichel's by such a degree that Buffalo needs to include the 1OA to make it happen.

No guarantees the 22 buff 1st rounder is 1OA

Awesome and when Eichel is forced to retire in a year because of recurring neck issues then all we have end up with is a pick!

Agreed, I like the idea, but giving up 2 players for Eichel leaves us a little low on top 6, especially when there is the uncertainty.

Lindholm is great value for what he brings as a centre, and fill in on the top 6 nicely. What's lacking is another centre who contributes as a good level top 6 centre also since the team lacks a high end one. If Monahan, or if another centre is brought in that can contribute close to as well as Lindholm did, and Tkachuk + Gaudreau (and Eat Bread) continue to perform as they did in the late part of the season, the team up front would have a lot better results, and be in good shape to compete.

I want to grab this and stop this narrative in its tracks. The idea that the Flames as built are somehow anything like a competitive playoff performer is nonsense. The fact that they won the season series against a then-struggling Montreal squad is utterly irrelevant. By your logic, all the Canadian teams are super strong, and we see that proved wrong every year at crunch time.
Montreal is playing great, and it's been driven by a committed, dynamic performance by a whole bunch of guys, not just a top line and a couple hot defensemen. That winning o/t goal to get them through came off Danault's stick, he's just been a workhorse, super responsible, and put in the net by Lehkonen, who is a 2nd/3rd liner in theory. Got the clutch goal. They may well be playing above their ability, putting up unsustainable performances. Good for them!
The Flames on the other hand, in key moments, miss the net, fail to shoot, try a tic-tac-toe that winds up going the other way.... there is no proven clutch performer amongst the skaters.
So I reject the notion that the Flames "coulda shoulda" and that they are somehow in the same category as a Vegas or the Islanders... they absolutely aren't, and going into yet another season thinking that the Flames are "just a piece or two away" as Darryl Sutter used to say 20 years ago..... well that's exactly why the team is where it is. Overestimate the local talent, stand pat, lose again.
Tkachuk can be a tenacious, difficult guy to play against. He can get some dirty goals, and the occassional snazzy one. But he's not going to outskate anyone, and apparently he is able to disappear for a whole season at a time. If he's replaced by someone faster and more talented, I wouldn't blink at losing him. But I doubt that will happen, because fast guys who can score are not traded for grindy truculent forwards too often.
He's a useful piece, but I'm not convinced he's a keystone moving forward in this league.

I'm not really "siding" with anyone here either. What seems to be indisputable is there was some type of conversation or discussion amongst the team relating back to Tkachuk's reaction to the incident and for much of the season afterwards, Tkachuk IMO looked disengaged on the ice.
People can blame who they want for this, but speaking for myself, I was disappointed with his play. Not the captain material, drag his team into battle kind of leader we could use.

Yeah, this echoes my thoughts on the matter. I think I am most disappointed that Tkachuk was so rattled by whatever happened that it affected his whole season on the ice.

Given his father I can pretty much guarantee that he won't do that for what Calgary will offer. Tkachuks are all about gettin' paid.

The Athletic just finished a fan poll on the player they would like to see Armstrong acquire for the Blues. Tkachuk has 55% of the vote. Way more than the other options of Eichel (20%), Landeskog (15%) or Hamilton (10%). A quote from the writer:

... but it’s clear that the city will not give up on Tkachuk wearing the Blue Note until his career is over.

Not a surprise really and it's only a very small, but vocal, minority of Flames fans who would prefer to move him. He's a great, young player.

From 31 Thoughts:
2. This is what I can tell you about the rumours that Matthew Tkachuk wants out of Calgary: When the news about Seth Jones got around, no one was thrilled it had leaked, but no one denied it. Same for Oliver Ekman-Larsson being available and Dougie Hamilton free to talk to other teams. With Tkachuk, there’ve been firm denials. I do believe the Flames refused to include him in any Pierre-Luc Dubois trade talks last season.

Nobody wants to move him. Many are just aware of his tenuous contract status.
