One could argue that taking a bridge deal is the bet on themselves. At a certain point, there is only so much room for your negotiating leverage to increase, while there is more room for it to plummet.
Taylor Hall. I'm sure there are some other examples in hockey, but this is the most recent.
Isiah Thomas Jr. in basketball (not sure he actually turned down a big offer, but he went from a potential $50M+ contract to the trash heap within a matter of months.
Le'Veon Bell - though I find his attempt admirable, he may have turned $70M into $30M (though not sure how much of the former would have been guaranteed).

Just listened to this St Louis radio show where they talked about the rumor. They talk about Tkachuk multiple times, first with O Brien then again just before the 1 hr mark. Pretty thoughtful takes on it, including acknowledging that it's not very realistic, and that Calgary doesn't have to trade him, and that he's worth a ton of young assets. At one point one of the hosts says he's heard that the ask would be at least two first rounders and a top prospect, if they wanted to move him.

Not that I believe the host here, but if the flames are entertaining a Tkachuk for futures trade, that means that they are entertaining a full scale rebuild. You can't do one and not the other IMO.
I think the value is close but they would need to be the '22 and '23 picks with no protection. Only way I'd consider any of that.

No kidding. I'm a huge MT fan but if the Flames actually did neuter his heart/soul edge with their usual brand of vanilla line-towing then he isn't going to be the highly effective player he needs to be. I don't think we're winning with this core, anyway.

For what it's worth, and I am not sure if this has already been said, but Friedman said on Vancouver radio that he doesn't think this one has much truth to it.

Before we do anything hasty, I'd like to see how Tkachuk plays in a full/normal season with this new coaching staff first. He's definitely a Sutter type of player. Yea he had a bad year overall, but I still think he can thrive here with the right line mates and coaches. He looked great playing with Gaudreau and Lindholm to close out the year. I'd like to see that line stick together to start next season.

In his draft class playing in 2015-16 he was better than Pastrnak, Nylander, Arvidsson . He was equal to Ehlers and Fabbri. Draistl who played 37 games in 2014-15 had 19 goals compared to Bennett's 18 in 2015-16.
Then Bennett was put away only to be brought out at playoff time. I guess the Flames needed grinders.
It was like the next 4 plus season were the 2nd Bob Newhart show and Sam just woke up last year in the bed with Suzanne Pleshette.
Bennett is likely to have the upside that he went to sleep with at the end of the 2016 season. Then it would be conceivable that he will be a lot closer to the top of the league than where he was for the last 4.
|
First off loved the Newhart reference.
The rest is just the same old Sam Bennett argument. It's not his fault. It is his fault.
I think both are plausible.
But no he's not heading to the top of the league in Florida or anywhere else.
But I guess time will prove it one way or another. I'd be laying my chips down on a return to his average on ice shooting percentage.
Where are you and your other brother Darryl placing yours?

Yaaay magic beans. Picks could easily end up with Poirer and Klimchuk. If we’re trading Tkachuk it should be for someone equal or better. Eichel/Laine/SethJones/PLD.

He was given every opportunity. Different positions, different lines. Then, didn't live up to cgy standards (maybe that's the problem). And the stupid penalties... Smh. He has the effort, but hockey brains meh. I hope he does well moving forward as I liked him alot.

Tkachuk is exactly the type of player Buffalo should be asking for Eichel, all this talk about picks & prospects for their $10m #1 center is ridiculous, the Buffalo fanbase would loose their minds if that happened.
And if Tkachuk is traded, it better not be for Laine, Seth Jones or PLD

The player, yes, the contract, likely no.
That’s not to say a trade can’t be structured around Tkachuk, but he’s not the perfect headliner due to his term left.
But it depends on what offers are out there.

I and the Darryls would expect that Bennett would have a better season coming up than Carter Verhaeghe who was drafted a year before Bennett. Carter had a 15.8 Shooting % with Tampa and a 16.8 with the Panthers last year.
Are you writing off him as well as he would likely regress to a norm? If so Florida might be in for a tough year.
Bennett is finally a shiny new thing that somehow he wasn't after 2016.
Somehow the Flames had an excess of players that were given more responsibility and leeway to be the core players with the Flames.
2016-17 Tkachuk took over as the shiny new thing, Along with Hamilton moving up to #1 pairing
2017-18 Hamilton became the #1 d and Jankowski was on his way to living up to his billing with 17 goals
2018-19 Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson and Ryan and Gio the Flames were loaded with shining new things. Gio was so much better he became a shiny new thing as a 34 year old.
2019-20 Mangiapane and Dube
2020-21 Tanev, Markstom and Valimaki
The Flames never needed or counted on Bennett to the degree that Florida will. There is no doubt the Bennett will be the #2C and that he will have 20-30 game leeway to lose the spot... sort of like Monahan, Backlund and Lindholm have with the Flames.
Just for a comparison the Flames based on Monahan recent production should start him on RW in the Lucic Dube line. See how he blossoms in that role . If he does good in that role maybe let him play 1C in the playoffs.

losing Bennett to a still get paid big bucks without having to succeed as a team was enough punishment for the franchise.
Bennett's play in Florida is a clear indication that there is something seriously wrong with the direction and attitude of the team. Sutter was not enough of a shock to kick start the malaise.

It is concerning, we have players that seem to be "holding back" Bennett before now Tkachuk. Bennett seemed to lose heart at some point and just wasn't going to do it for Calgary. When he got to Florida he himself said he was having the most fun of his career, how does that work?
