I don't get why anyone here wouldn’t cheer for Montreal or Ottawa to win the Stanley Cup if they made it to the finals.
All western Canadian teams, yes frigg them. Toronto even if some of us don’t hate the team, we hate the media and their fans so them winning would never be acceptable due to the agonizing aftermath.
But the Habs and Sens I just don’t get why we wouldn’t rally behind them?
Maybe some of the older guys who still remember the 80’s battles we once had with the Habs but otherwise why not cheer for them?
I just don't want to cheer for another Canadian team, and it has nothing to do with rivalries. Maybe for me it is a reaction to the bizarre insistence that I should be cheering for a Canadian team?

I wouldn't mind having an eastern conference team to root for, unfortunately I can never get into another team. I'm getting old and these late night Flames games are hard to stay up for.
For me it's %100 about Carey Price. Probably one of the best humans in the sport and currently a positive lightning rod for this country's current events.
The man's earned this shot and I want to see him finish this off.

Hard not to cheer for Weber as well. He’s played a long time and is an absolute beast of a player.

I think you have to cheer for Montreal here (or you don't, I actually don't care), but for me:
- They're clearly the most historic and iconic Canadian team
- They're miles more loveable than Vegas (dumb bandwagon team), and Tampa (dumb loser team)
- The Islanders are neat and all but nobody cares about the Islanders
- Montreal winning would please Montreal and the many Montreal fans across Canada, and we could join in their joy for a day, or two. It would also upset Toronto, which is a positive.
- Tampa winning would please no one and primarily upset Calgary, clearly the worst option
- Islanders winning would also please no one, but upset no one, it will be like the Stanley Cup was never awarded at all (maybe good or bad)
- It's nice to see elite guys who have been at it forever finally get a cup (Price, Weber)
- Montreal is clearly the best city in Canada
- French Canadians can be a delight
- The notion that they riot after wins is funny
That's not really the same. That was a shooting at a massive parade. A couple days after they won. Not really sure it has much of a connection to them winning.
Habs thing is a bunch of people wearing Habs jerseys flipping over a police car the night of the win to advance.
Win or lose they will riot even more.
So jealous. You totally want to be out there in your Leafs tarp flippin cars.

Yes, the Habs represent Montreal, not Canada, just as the Flames represent Calgary, not Canada. This isn’t the Olympics or the Worlds.
When the playoffs started, I was definitely against all other Canadian teams winning the cup. Now that Montreal is actually in the finals though, I am pretty excited for them. Canadiens' fans are generally arrogant and hype up their players, which irks me. However, I've begun to appreciate their true devotion to their team.
I do not think I would feel the same way if this was Toronto, I'd still probably hate them. I know when Edmonton and Vancouver made it to the finals, I was cheering against them.
This is a pretty fun underdog story. The Sutter led Flames was also clearly better than the Habs. If they can win, so can we!
Also, this makes me really wish the Flames had pursued Toffoli. That guy is a gamer.

For me it’s at least in part push back against the Canadian sports media, though it’s worse with Toronto, Edmonton and Winnipeg (and to an extent Vancouver) than it is with Ottawa and Montreal.
I was a Habs fan as a little kid (and maybe the only one around where I lived) because I liked Lafleur, Cornoyer, the big 3 D and Dryden. I was a fan of Yvan Lambert. But I grew away from them partly because the Flames were in town and partly because they moved from the flying style of the 70s to a grinding defensive style in the later 80s and 90s.
I have no problem cheering for Price, or Suzuki, though. Just like I have other players on other teams I enjoy watching.

If Islanders win, they tie the stupid Oilers for number of Cup wins. So that's a big bonus for me.

My wife's cousin is married to Shea Weber's cousin. Therefore, if Weber wins the cup it's just like I won the cup, right????
Go Habs!
