No. It was old news. They decided to hire Muller instead of Tocchet. If they were to hire Tocchet they would have had to wait to see what Seattle did and then potentially miss out on Tocchet and Muller. It was one or the other and they didn't want to miss out on both. I suspect Muller had interest elsewhere too.

I'd imagine Gallant would have gotten Seattle but it's pretty hard to say no to a NYR gig.

Seattle might not be offering top dollar after paying a bundle just to be a team.

Dave Hakstol was awful in Philly.

Huh.

Hopefully we pick up Tocchet now.

Weird pick. They probably had a lot of interest. Sounds like Francis saw a lot of him during the worlds in 2019. Must have made a good impression.

I continue to believe that Gerard Gallant is not nearly as coveted in NHL circles as he is by fans.

This appears to be the case for Bruce Boudreau as well.
Although he may end up being hired as a Leafs assistant coach.

Which, for me at least, I don't understand at all given his stellar coaching record, but hockey professionals certainly know more than me.

It seems like coaches (as opposed to players) are evaluated a lot more on PO performance. By that standard, Gallant doesn't have a stellar record.

Gallant has, in 9 seasons as HC, been out of the POs 3 times, lost in round one twice, and made the Finals once. The other 3 seasons he was fired mid season after mediocre starts. Now his first 3 seasons were in Columbus, a bad team. But he was fired off of a pretty good Florida team (first place in the division the year before) and a great Vegas team, after round one exits and a poor start to the season.

Maybe that's the issue with Boudreau too. 14 years as HC (with very good teams), only 4 years past round one (and only one round 3).

Somehow, I get the sense Seattle is not going to be an elite team like Vegas right away.

Have we? Wasn't Ward the first first-timer since Playfair?

The Flames have had more former Cup-winning head coaches than first-time head coaches over the last 15 years.

If Hakstol has success then great but this smells of a stop-gap to get a current coach who's under contract.

There is clearly an issue with Gallant. He seems to get results but is unwanted.

Well, we recently hired Darryl Sutter. It was his first time coaching since he retired.

Ward was a first time head coach, yes.

Peters was a first time coaching a Canadian Team

Gulutzan was a first time coach for an NHL team that wears Red.

Lots of first timers!

He's just no-nonsense, he wants full control on who's in the lineup and who plays with who, he will butt heads with some GM's.

Sutter is the same way.
