Help, save, whatever.
|
Can someone explain to me why the Isles fans littered the ice with beer cans after their team won? Clutterbuck seemed not impressed coming off the ice. I think the cans were hitting the Isles players.

Yep, Isles should win this series, but, the Habs aren't going to win it all. It will be the Islanders to win the cup.

The Islanders should definitely not win this series based on rosters.

If the Isles win, it's just another black eye for the league and how poorly it's officiated. Watching game 6 was like watching the bad guy win a WWE match.

So your just not gonna give the Isles any credit?? Refs have been bad on both sides and every playoff series in fact. So don't tell me the Isles don't deserve to be where they are. They earned it.

Disagree.
The Islanders are exactly where I thought they would be.
I know people hate the saying "offense sells tickets, defense wins championships" but there is so much truth to it.
Of the 4 remaining teams, the Isles (who went to the semis last year as well), the Lightning, and the Knights were all top 6 in goals given up during the regular season. Montreal, the one outlier, had their starting goaltender miss almost 3/4 of the season, but when he did play put up a GAA that would have had the Habs #1 in that category.
Team defense and commitment to it is the biggest component to success in the playoffs.

Which is why hiring Sutter was a good thing. We could *easily* be where the isles, Vegas and Montreal are with a little luck and goaltending. Sutter is the only coach we have had in 25 years that gives me hope for playoff success

Team defense matters matters more in the playoffs because NHL officiating is not the same in the playoffs compared to the regular season. What's obstruction in the regular season is not in the playoffs. It certainly makes life difficult for GM's as if you build a great regular season team there's a good chance your team will have difficulty even getting out of the first round if they aren't proficient at slowing games down locking things down defensively. High skill teams that can score a lot of goals and dominate on the powerplay in the regular season need to be able to change their style of play for the playoffs or they have no chance of winning a cup. Teams like the Islanders simply have to have good enough regular seasons to make the playoffs as their style of play directly translates to the change in officiating. I hate it but this is what the NHL clearly wants.

Also no coincidence that the 4 remaining teams have 4 of the best goalies in the league. And even backups - Sorokin and Lehner are no slouches either. In save% Varlamov, MAF, and Vasilevksy were 2,3 and 6 (and 1,4 and 5 were backups). And Price is Price.

I hate to break it to you, but if the Flames have any hope of success in the next few years it will be by employing the same roster model and play-style as the Islanders.

Trotz and Korn could probably win with guys like Rittich and Koskinen.

Ya there's no way Tampa is losing a game 7 at home, with or without Kucherov. They've also dominated every game they've played after a loss, so I kind of expect the Isles to roll over. Last night was their last gasp

Korn is pretty consistent in his goalie results isn't he. Wherever he goes the goalies blossom. And when he leaves they often just aren't quite as good.
I realize we aren't getting Korn (because we aren't getting Trotz) but if I were the Flames I'd look at a Korn protoge. Mike Bales is a Korn student who coached MAF in Pittsburgh, went to the Canes where he seemed to improve Mrazek a lot, and is now in Buffalo where he can't be that happy.

I kinda feel like the Isles fans jinxed themselves by throwing the beer cans. Which is also just a weird way to close a building...

I believe it’s more Trotz and playing a solid defensive system, but credit where credit is due.
