I'm in disbelief right now - a Habs team pretty much from basement dwellers to likely winning the Cup now! I'm gonna stop doubting the Habs in this playoffs.
If Tre would stop searching for the perfect goalie and start filling some holes on the the right side of the team...

It's a cinderella run, they happen pretty frequently in the NHL. They never go all the way though, Montreal will not get past Tampa. You simply can't compete with a team allowed to be 16m over the cap

I hate the Habs (I generally hate all the other Canadian teams except maybe Winnipeg and Ottawa, because I see them all as rivals) and I think they have the second most delusional fans in the league after the Oilers. When I lived in Quebec City, people genuinely expected Drouin to score 50 goals every year. Even Canuck fans look rational in comparison.
I also don't like Vegas or Tampa, but those teams are a little too distant to hate.

I don’t hate them either and I just don’t think the same way as some people regarding the reasons people have chosen to hate them. Vegas took advantage of expansion rules? OK, but blame the rules, and the league, not Vegas. Tampa beat Calgary in 04 and the puck was in? OK, but that was officiating, not something they did. Tampa got around the cap? OK, but again, that’s the league, not them. It could have been any team (that happened to have a superstar who suffered an injury and were a good enough team to make the POs without the said star). Neither team is dirty or has a bad fan base or plays boring hockey or is a natural rival, or anything else that would cause me to hate them.

I have that feeling a bit too. I just don't want to listen to Habs fans brag for the next 20 years.

Enough energy to make a fruitless offensive attempt, but not enough to pick up the trailer.
I love Stone, but those are the moments that separate the great players from the very very best

Haha my bro totally against the Habs because he doesn’t want good things for people in Quebec. Feels Alberta has been shafted for years by their voting, hostage taking of Canada on separation, transfer payments, bailouts, more handouts etc etc.
Hmm..,

As much as I hate Montreal they at least built the team right and experienced a lot of bumps along the way. They looked at their team and recognized the weaknesses in the lineup, then went out and addressed them by adding the likes of Anderson, Toffoli, Perry, and then Staal. Good on them and I hope they take out Vegas then the Tampa Cheaters.

As a guy who lived through the various expansions from 21 teams to the current 31, soon to be 32 teams, I'm actually glad that the Vegas team has done well. Those god-awful early teams from the 90s and 2000s were painful to watch and not a good way to try and build a fan base in their respective cities.
I also agree with subsequent posters. They weren't gifted the team. Sure the rules were more favorable, but they were able to leverage teams' desires to protect certain players to build their team to go with astute management and player recognition. I'm sure there was some luck in there as well.

rintoul and surman were discussing if teams rethink how they built if montreal gets to the finals.
i have always thought it would be interesting what would ahppen if you could build a really balanced team of all guys who are say second liners. you would not be as exposed to what happens if your superstar gets injured.

I guess, but it was clearly the D’s guy. Why the hell did they both close on the puck carrier? Terrible D.
The turn over was ridiculous though.

See this is what frustrates me. People have an idea about a player, Stone in this case, and make him out to be all world defense, great offense superstar and will go to all lengths to defend him. If Stone was so good and aware he would have seen both D moving towards the puck carrier and covered the guy he quit chasing.
Stone is an above average player, not some superstar who needs his gaffs defended. He screwed up, accept it and move on don't look for a scapegoat.

Pietrangelo was fresh off the bench and closed a greater distance to get closer (which wouldn't have been obvious to Whitecloud). There was a split second where Whitecloud could have tried to cover Caufield, but it would have been too late.
Stone had the full view and could've been there with two hard strides.

Stone is a top 5 winger in the league who made a bad play...in a game where his team was sucking and he was trying to make something out of nothing. He's still the first winger I'd choose for me team, full stop.

… I’m looking at a play for what I saw. I’m not some stone fan boy. Bite me.
You miss the part in that quote where I ragged him for his dumb turnover.

To be fair, the Canadiens are spending like $13million on goaltending

I just look at the faith that the team/coaches are putting into young "unproven" players like Suzuki and Kotkaniemi and then look at how the Flames manage their young players...there's a chasm between philosophies there.
The Flames feel the need to artificially push youth down their line-up and refuse to allow young players to make mistakes. Years and years of spending 3rd and 4th round picks on depth defencemen instead of using the young ones we already have. Years and years of propping up veterans and overpaying depth in free agency at the expense of internal development. We get what we deserve.
