Mullers a great fit here. Glad Gelinas is being retained in a great role.

He doesn't need to say jack to the players .....he can likely still bring it on the ice skating wise as I have run into Marty and he looks phenomenal ....damn I love #23 and still have a huge man crush on him .

The players in Nashville loved him in the role he now has here.

As for Markstrom....hell be fine . He is a great goalie and just needs to not have to carry this team on his back ala Kipper and well be fine.

Sutter sitting back and letting Muller, Huska and Co do the heavy lifting and motivation sounds promising .

When you listen to Kings players still they may have locked Darryl out of the locker room in his last year but the players that moved on understand what he did for them to win , change the culture and make them Champions .

He did that here and I'm still giddy about my 03 /04 Flames underdogs who's GAF meter was higher than any team here I've ever watched since Badger BOB was here.....and the other BOB everyone hated except me.

Unfinished business as advertised.

Sounds like Sutter was the one who wanted a former NHL HC on the bench and that he and BT talked to a bunch of people before zeroing in on Muller.

Quote:
Muller came aboard after Flames head coach Darryl Sutter suggested that he wanted a voice behind the bench that had previously been a head coach in the league. The general manager talked with people who knew Muller, including players who he had coached.

“Before you go out and fill a position, you build a profile of what you want,” Treliving said. “Things like what characteristics you want that person to have, their background, personality, all those types of things.”

The Flames cast a wide net before tabbing Muller, a native of Kingston, Ont.

“Darryl spoke with a number of candidates and I spoke with a number of guys,” he said. “Once we zeroed in on Kirk, someone Darryl felt real comfortable with, they went through that process and then after that, I got more involved.”

Sutter and Muller see the game in a similar way.

“The style of play, they’re aligned on that,” Treliving said.

“Play with the puck, without the puck. In today’s game, you need to have a strong staff and it’s not just the head coach. He’s got game plans and 20 players to worry about, so you need a strong staff around him.”
More changes ahead, though thats not a surprise.

Quote:
“We’ve got a long list,” Treliving said. “We’ve got to make our team better, whether that be on the ice or off the ice. We like what we’ve done with our coaching staff so that’s one piece of business out of the way.”

Typical Tre recital from the ‘How to be a GM’ essay he wrote in application for the job

You could read this as “Darryl picked his guy. Then Tre got involved”

I am tired of this guy

Be "tired" of him all you want, but after the whole Bill Peters incident you can hardly blame him for vetting every single hire under his watch.

Exactly what were you wanting Treliving to say? “We felt like a change so I just threw a bunch of names in a hat”?

What kind of hat? Did he just grab any hat or did he have a list of characteristics he wanted in the hat?
I need detailed info before I decide how angry I am with this!

Man just wish people could stay rational on a topic.

There are plenty of reasons to support or want Treliving replaced without hating every single thing he says or does. Honestly just makes it clear that any objectivity is pretty much gone for you.

You'd prefer he came out with "we didn't look around at all ... saw a hockey card in my basement of Muller and just called him and offered him the job!"

Of all his faults ... (coaching hires, UFA signings, making the wrong call on the core) being thorough isn't a strike against him. It's a plus.

You have to really squint hard to see anything to object to in that piece.

I am not a huge fan of Muller. I don't recall anything about his terms in Montreal and Carolina that would indicate he is a great head coach. But he isn't the head coach. The Flames identified what they wanted (experience, connection with players) and went with Muller. That just makes sense.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Well that is a straw man, then, isn’t it?

I never faulted Treliving for being thorough.

First off, I was just making a passing comment, nothing worth everyone getting their knickers in a bunch.

Secondly what it was about is Treliving speaking at length and saying very little. And also the implication is not that he is thorough (though the way he belabours points, perhaps some people take that as such)

Basically what he said reads that he and Sutter and everyone were busy turning over every stone, then once Sutter identified the right stone (not Michael), he told Tre and then Tre ‘got involved’.

Not about being thorough, it’s about being as involved in the AC decision as he was for the HC, and having a lot of nothing to say

Right but TSN called him and asked if they could talk about the coaching hire.

So to make you happy he should say no?

Talk less when they ask him questions?

Grunt?

Just pointing out it gets pretty extreme when a guy answering questions riles you up.

Head coach wants an AC, picks one out, goes to GM for approval. News at 11.

Yeah, maybe read my posts using Morgan Freeman’s voice instead of Seth Bullock’s. I’m really not riled up.

Any interview with Tre is at high risk of a high words:info ratio. This one is the same in that sense and I suppose I am as tired of him now as I was before.

But this one was a bit special as he may have admitted that he wasn’t so involved in the decision. Which gives a glimmer of hope

And isn't that the right move?

Let the head coach pick the guy he wants to work with on the bench, and then you get involved to vet the coach and do the contract stuff.

Honestly I don't see how there is anything to pick at Treliving here.

Looks like you forgot to use the Morgan Freeman voice too. (Use Bill Murray for what I just said)

I read it in the voice of Christopher Walken thereby making it sound weird and creepy

Try using Grover’s voice. Much less stressful.

Bobcat Goldthwait is a great way to take the focus off of what is actually being said as well.

I think a Robert de Niro Taxi Driver voice is most appropriate!
