Anyone know what is going in to the NE corner of Deerfoot Meadows? Earthmovers moved in earlier this week and started ripping the bare plot up.

It's being speculated that it's a new Canadian Tire. And apparently will be the largest one in Western Canada.

That would have to mean a McLeod/Southland closure, no? Couldn't see the biggest Canadian Tire in western Canada opened up within a 7 minute drive of another one.

Not necessarily. The Walmart and Superstore in the Macleod/Southland area didn't close when the ones at Deerfoot Meadows opened.

Yeah, Walmart and grocery I can see for sure. I don't see the same for two Canadian Tires that close, at all. I guess we'll see.

Oh yay!
Maybe we’ll really spice that area up and get a Winners across from the Sport Chek for the trifecta of generic shopping plaza excitement.

Hell....dont forget about the one on 130th.
You're really talking about 2 Canadian Tires within ~7 minutes in either direction of a new one.
You'd imagine one of them would have to close. Canadians only need so many Tires!

Sunnyside Greenhouses is infinitely cooler than Superstore.
Infinitely.
Calgary is getting watered down more by the day.

It's not Calgary, this transition has been happening in every city in North America for decades. We are headed for a time where most cities and their communities will be pretty much indistinguishable, even between two separate countries.

Houses, restaurants and retail are all being optimized to a perfect standard by a few major builders/companies.
I mean even look within Calgary. Our new communities are all exactly the same. Same looking houses, same shopping district, same restaurants. They're barely distinguishable.

And so people friendly! Giant parking lots just crying out to be walked!
Then when you break down and drive between stores in the same complex the traffic patterns are infuriating. Every time I visit a power centre I end up in a rage.

Holy cow, the price of Taco Bell has gone up a lot from when I remember it. Are they still serving the same crappy little tacos, which used to be like $1.29 and now are apprently $2.99 each?

Neither here nor there, but in the mid 90’s, while in high school (in the US), Taco Bell was our go-to spot after Friday night football games.
Burritos and tacos were .39, .49, and .59 cents, depending on what you got in it. With $5, you could practically get enough food to last days.
Suffice it to say that it is no longer the value it once was.

Some of my earliest memories were how cool it would be to be the elevator operator.
That, and how beautiful the fries with gravy were.
My trips back to Calgary now often coincide with ‘Bay Days’. Even with the pandemic preventing two visits, I reckon more than half my clothing is from that store.

What’s a ‘power centre’? Agree about Beacon Hill. But the pro move is to drive behind Costco and Winners etc to get out of there. There was an accident once at the exit by the Shoppers and everybody in that shopping centre was trapped.

I was curious about that too. This is what Wikipedia has to say:
Quote:
A power center or big-box center (known in Canadian and Commonwealth English as power centre or big-box centre) is a shopping center with typically 250,000 to 600,000 square feet (23,000 to 56,000 m2) of gross leasable area that usually contains three or more big box anchor tenants and various smaller retailers, where the anchors occupy 75–90% of the total area
