Is there a Muller-Sutter connection in the past that I am missing? If not it’s pretty interesting.

Anyway, a changeover in coaching staff isn’t a bad thing. New perspectives, new voices. And Maclean being involved probably helps Sutter with knowledge of the young guys people really want in the lineup.

Yes, he wasn’t good at drafting.

He built a team that won a division, went to a Final, and should’ve won another division.

It got away from him at the end.
He was bad at drafting and managing the cap.

Those two skills become more important every year now.

I just hope someone writes a book that tells us what happened in those two days that saw the Saddledome become the looney bin.

What a 48 hour period ... Phaneuf trade, then Jokinen deal ... all those bodies added in two transactions. Quantity over quality ...

Something went really sideways.

Ho-hum. Fine, tinker with the coaching staff once again. But please, Brad, please do something about that...thing... you call pro scouts.

Muller was hired as the Blues assistant in 2014, as the successor to Ken Hitchcock. For some reason, Armstrong changed his plan ~2 years later and hired Mike Yeo to take over for Hitch. Muller was PO, and quit before Yeo was announced (as did Brad Shaw, who was just hired by the Canucks)

The Blues had the #3 ranked PP over the two year period that Muller was here, and #3 in face off percentage during that period

Cail MacLean is on the FAN and sounding super classy, per usual.

So Huska, MacLean and Sigalet all promoted from the Heat ehh?
That's got to look promising to anyone who comes to coach the Heat in the future.

I had taken a week off work and booked time up at the Banff Centre. Wanted to get away from everything, focus on some writing, really disappear for the world. And there’s no better place to get away from everything than the Centre.
I got into my little dorm room on a Sunday afternoon. (I think it was a Sunday?) Set up my writing desk. Then I thought “Hey maybe I’ll check out CPuck.”
And of course the Phaneuf trade was going down like exactly at that moment. And then every hour there was some increasingly unbelievable new development to it all. So needless to say I didn’t do too much writing those first couple of days.
What a wild time.

Darryl is good for some surprises. He is not afraid to be bold.

If Iginla wants to be an NHL coach, I have no doubt he would make a very capable one.

But not for another 15-20 years.

Wayne Gretzky was a great player too. Look how that turned out as a coach.

Have always liked Muller. Seems like a great add. Hopefully he helps mould the team buy in and they start with gritty, hard on the puck, and become successful.

Anyway, I guess as an adult I can get Kirk Muller and Cail MacLean mixed up.
As long as we don’t call them Kirk McLean

Darryl has dropped Marty Gelinas before, when he was much more deserving of sticking around.
I never understood this move after 2003-2004

Nice to get some Flames news! Its been awfully quiet since clean-up day.

I don't know enough about any of these guys but I'm encouraged by two things:

1. Sutter now has his own coaching staff in place
2. The Eliminator is still in the organization

"Flames ownership won't pay for a top tier coach"

...I wonder how much more money the coaching staff is costing the Flames this season compared to Ward and his crew last season. It has to be significant, no? Like...5x more?
