Yep, having lost my 21 year old cat just over a week ago I can relate to this. We knew his time with us was limited due to his kidney's starting to fail but once he stopped walking and eating he was gone within a day a half. He did drink but he started to grind his teeth because of what looked like a canker which I think was due to his kidneys shutting down.

And even had we decided to euthanize him which we were open to we would have had to wait until the day he passed away anyway because the vet goes out of town every Wednesday to communities who don't have a vet. And unfortunately they aren't the type that will make emergency calls.

Sorry for your loss.

My son’s cat collapsed and suddenly died tonight, only five years old. They raced to the Emergency vet but there was nothing they could do. Such a terrible shock. They’ve had him and his brother since they were born. I’ve always taken care of them when they would go away. I’m so sad for how devastated they are. He was such a cute little guy! I will really miss you Toulouse.

When my pug was a puppy, she would run around the yard or on carpet and catch her nail, yelp, then jump up on the couch or run to me to be saved.

When I got a second dog, and he got a bit too rambunctious or the playing got too rough for her, she'd run to me to be saved.

Getting her nails cut was like skinning a cat, but iIf I stood there and locked eyes and pet her, she relaxed

When we were on walks and it got too hot, or when she was older and too tired, she'd stop and look up at me to carry her. Which I did. Lately I'd just carry her to the park, let her do her business, smell a tree or two, then carry her again

She had cancer, bad knees, bad hips, teeth problems, she went mostly blind and deaf, but she kept bouncing back

Last night at about 5pm her breathing became laboured, and she kept looking at me to save her. She'd try and get comfortable, fail, and just look at me. I gave her some pain meds, but that didn't help, and by 8pm she was really struggling to breathe. But she kept trying. I took her to the vet to get put down. She was about 16 years old

This is the first time she hasn't been sitting next to me where she always sat, staring at me

So very sorry to hear. But what a wonderful life she had. Take comfort from your remarkable shared experiences. And, yes, you saved her at the very end - when it mattered the most. Take care.

I know it's hard to think about right now, but 16 years of treats and love is a pretty damn good life for a dog, she was lucky to have you.

I knew my other guy would be depressed, but I didn't realize just how upset and I'm guessing lonely he'd be

He just mopes around, lost, listless, sleeps facing the wall, barely eats. All very unusual. And he sure doesn't let me out of his sight - even if I turn a corner in my house, he's right there behind me. He hasn't been alone in his 11.5 years, not even for one night

It's heartbreaking.

I've taken him with me everywhere just for some distraction, while otherwise trying to maintain his routine as best as possible

I hate when this thread gets bumped, because it forces me to think about the inevitable with my 11 month old puppy. I know there are many years of happiness and memories to be made but every time I think about the eventuality of it, I just become overwhelmingly sad. We have a 7-week old baby as well and knowing that they'll grow up together and when our child is hopefully in their early teens, they'll have to feel that pain, too, is just heartbreaking.

Sorry about your pug, Sr. Mints.

Not really sure where to put this.

Last Thursday night our cat escaped the house while we were watering the plants during the heatwave.

We haven't seen or heard a peep from him since then. Left out his litter, bed, etc. Checked in with Animal Services, looked at their book of dead cats and refresh their impounded cats list more often than I care to admit.

He's an indoor cat and would be useless out in the wild.

You hear stories of pets returning after weeks of being away but at what point do you stop going for walks to search for him. 5 days doesn't seem like much but when you're used to feeding them twice a day, sitting on your lap and seeing then wander the house, it feels like he's been gone longer.

I am actually surprised by the amount of stress this is causing me. I've had to put down pets in the past and it sucks but this has been much worse. Not knowing if they're in trouble/pain/etc is brutal.

As painful as it would be, even knowing he's dead, would be better than knowing nothing.

If you're in the McKenzie Towne area and come across this guy (Egon), let me know.

Sorry to hear, cats are really good at escaping, and don't come running back when you call...Have you checked the YYC lost pets Facbook group? I've heard that is the most active.

Yup. He's posted there and on their Twitter. The people who run that site are really incredible. Offered lots of tips and a checklist of things to try.

Also if there is a community Facebook page it's worth posting in there too if you can. We've reunited a cat with it's home that way in the past.
