^^^ Yeah, there's the rub. The Flames are NOT entering a rebuild. Not after just hiring Darryl Sutter. So everyone please put aside your fantasies of trading away known quantities for magic beans, because it isn't going to happen after this coaching hire. Players will be moved out, but it will be for other known quantities and players that can contribute right now.

This is the reality of the situation. Flames will look to reshape their core while still looking to compete in the pacific next year.

Personally that actually makes more sense then trying to blow it up in a flat cap scenario. If this team is brutal next season then it is time to blow it up but let’s see how they do things in a normal setting.

You’re probably right. But people need to be realistic about the return on hockey trades. Monahan might get you a Max Domi but he’s not getting you a Patrick Laine.

Let Gio go to Seattle. Sign Perry for $2M Currently making 750k.

37 playoff games 8 goals 15 pts and counting in the last 2 seasons. He is a year younger than Gio. Could sign him for 2 years.

PS> Sutter would likely make Perry captain. That would provide a major shake up with minimal moves.

Nobody was saying one for one, there would have to be a small add on our end. That and this board tends to undervalue our players while overvaluing everybody else's.

If Treliving does trade any members if the core this summer, I expect we’ll find out that the opposite is true.

I actually think it's the opposite.
Rebuilding teams can trade their best players away with cap retention.
One they have cap from trading people away, they have cap space to take on bad contracts.

All of this is incredibly valuable with the flat cap.

Add the fact that that Bedard and Michkov might be better than McDavid and Eichel, and this might be the best time possible to initiate a rebuild.

Don't get me wrong, the Flames obviously won't do it. But I think in terms of cap it would make more sense than people are letting on.

I think Armia at a 3.33 x 3 deal would be nice. Would be a great addition to our middle 6. That’s the guy I am going for in the offseason. If we have to bump it up to a 4x4 I would. I think he’d be the second coming of Frolik when Frolik played his best hockey here.

There is a limit on how many players a team can retain salary on I believe. Also you are also assuming that the Flames will eat salary so they can suck badly and tank. I don’t see the owners signing up for that.

In terms of the upcoming prospects I don’t disagree but looking at this from a business perspective it makes no sense. I will fully accept the direction if they decided to tear it down but I would also cancel my season tickets as I have no interest in spending that money on a terrible team with no shot at the playoffs.

Having Sutter coaching the team and having a strong starting goalie in Markstrom I struggle to see this team being bottom 2. Bottom 10 sure but bottom 2 I don’t see it

I agree with this whole post.
I'm just saying that from a cap/asset management perspective, it would make sense to rebuild right now.

But you're right, they wouldn't do it for business reasons.

The only way a rebuild would start is if they were forced into it. The only way I see this happening is if Markstrom is awful for the entirety of his contract. And I don't think that's going to happen.

Over the edge in the same sense that I get when I click on CP and the more I read, the more I think there are some fans on here who have clearly started to drink the Kool-Aid of the process.

I'm still in the trade Gaudreau/Gio column. You want to shake up the team, moving Monahan will not get it done.
I was on the Perry band wagon last time around and still am. We need his type of grit.

Brad Treliving:" Yeah so Mr. Edwards I'm going to spend a bunch of your money for players to NOT play here next year so we can be bad enough to miss the playoffs and all the revenue that comes with that. The upside is we gets assets back that we have no idea how good they will be. Is that OK with you?"

Over the edge in the way some people are valuing players or just so jaded in their outlook. Like years of mediocrity have pushed them over the edge into hot take land.

Detroit and Vancouver are the only teams with room to protect Giordano before the expansion draft. I’m too scared of Treliving trading with Yzerman. I would be fine with trading Gio to Vancouver.

If Gio was on another team would you want the Flames to take him for a year a 6.75 M ?

You would be wanting that team to retain some salary.

At least Gio's contract makes sense a couple of million too much

---------

How does Shea Weber's contract end?

He has a year of 6 M, a year of 3 M and 3 years of 1M. with a 5 yr cap hit of 7,857,143

In 2 years his buyout cap hit is 7,190,476 for 3 years.

Do they get to say he is injured? Can he retire like Byfuglien? At least there was a clear indication of injury that Byfuglien didn't handle well to his own detriment.

Is there a gentleman's agreement that Weber would retire at 38 ?

Would Montreal lose their 1st pick should he retire? ( arizona style?)
