Which is exactly why the Flames should work out a deal that has Seattle taking Lucic. If you're giving up assets to protect another, make sure you jettison a problem with those assets you're giving up.

Why pay Seattle at all? Just let them take one of Lucic, Gio, or Backlund. At this point I dont think it really affects our potential to win measurably whichever of these guys go in the draft.

If cap floor is an issue at all (which I’m not sold on) Lucic is actually good value for Seattle. His cap hit is $6M but next year his signing bonus is $3M and his salary is only $1M. I’m not sure of timing but if the Flames pay the former, it’s a cheap way to get to the floor. Even after that he only costs $5 and 4M respectively and he has an LNTC clause kicking in, so Seattle might be able to trade him as a relatively cheap TDL add to someone, because his bonus works in a similar way.

I guess you're basically trading him Backlund at that point. I'd want something back for that.

Lucic only makes $5M, 4M and 5M cash in the next three years, $750K of which is paid by the Oilers.

What are we talking about really here though... We want to make changes? Obviously that is related to total lack of playoff success right?

Well, out of those three Lucic performs the best, measurably, in the playoffs. Not only for the flames but of course over their careers.
Gio was horrible in the playoffs last year. Terrible.

My bad. $5M and $4m. I was looking at the wrong columns. Still a lower cash deal than cap hit, especially next year if they take him after bonus is paid.

If you are advocating the trade returns that have been thrown around for Monahan (not saying you are - just saying) the limits on a return for Backlund should be palatable.

Not hard for him to game it to locations that are pleasant, have a good chance of winning, and a low chance of wanting to make a deal for him based on their depth charts:

TBL
VGK
PIT
SJ
ANA
LAK
PHI
TOR
EDM (if he's feeling brave and/or doesn't want to move far)
WPG
or NAS/DAL/COL

Since when is Francis putting the screws to Calgary simply because he wants to wait to see the full compliment of players available before he decides on his selection?

No one is taking Lucic for free, the cost is likely at least a first round pick.

There lots of players with high cap hits who play at a better level than Lucic. Seattle will have zero problem hitting the cap floor and will do so collecting as many assets as possible.

Oh, I’ve never thought the floor was an issue, but there are those who mention it all the time. Really, a few $3M contracts solves it.
