Last couple years of Ellis may not be great, but the Leafs really have a 2-3 year window before Matthews is UFA and Tavares/Muzzin/Brodie start to slow down.

I agree with EF and Marek, that is not enough.

Listening to the fan this week and they were discussing which player from the core they could see moving and Monahan appeared to be the popular choice. I have been thinking about some potential trade partners and though about the Blackhawks. They could be looking to transition out of their rebuild sooner than later while they still have Kane. Thoughts on this deal?
To Flames: Strome, Zadorov
To Hawks: Monahan, Kylington, 3rd
Hawks see if Kane can get Monahan back to his 30 goal ways and they give Kylington a fresh start. Flames get Strome who they hope will be like his brother who was a later bloomer and really has played well for his third organization in the Rangers. Zadorov is a hard hitting physical Dman who will be part of a rebuilt left side with Gio being selected be Seattle so he will be fighting Valimaki for the second par LD.
Monahan is worth more than Strome, Zadorov is worth more than Kylington a third is tossed in to balance it out.

Ugh. We actually get slower in this deal. Monahan is no speed demon but strome is slow.
We need multiple core pieces moved out. Moving out Monahan at a low point isn’t going to turn this team around. Mangiapane is ready for top 6 duty. Johnny and/or Chucky need to go.

Mangi is not going to replace Johnny
Maybe Tkachuk the way he played this year but I doubt it

Won’t replace Johnny, but he’s ready for a bigger role and I believe top 6. Allows us to move Johnny or chucky for help elsewhere. Mangiapane isn’t part of the core that has let us down, move those who have disappointed us and give mangiapane a chance.

I agree with you that there needs to be a decision on Tkachuk/Gaudreau and one should be retained and the other shopped in my opinion. The only way I go forward with both is if they are both willing to sign long term decent extensions then I keep that top line together. Having said that if the Sabres are willing to entertain an Eichel for Tkachuk+ deal then the Flames should take it if they believe that Eichel can get this procedure he wants and he can have a Ping career after it.
I agree multiple core pieces should be on the block this summee

The Athletic has a piece up penned by Salvian from Calgary and Ian Mendes from Ottawa on making a deal centered around Sean Monahan.
Lots of back and forth but both believe they make very good trade partners. In the end it boils down to if the Sens would part with one of Norris, Pinto, Batherson or Connor Brown.
Mendes made a weird comparison between Monahan and Bobby Ryan and a decline on production without ever taking into account the latters off ice issues as a reason for his instead of realizing Monnys have almost assuredly been all injury based. But tahts really just noise in all this.
So essentially ot would look something like this in their estimation
Monahan for one of Connor Brown/Shane Pinto, Brannstrom and maybe a 2nd or flip of 1st round picks this season.
If that deal is on the table Im all over it...not that I want to see Monny go but its a core shake up that retirns a piece that helps right now as well as a piece for the future.
I would think Pinto would be preferred but Connor Brown is the type of guy player this club needs. His chemistry with Mangiapane at the WC doesn't hurt things either.
So...thoughts? (Im just the messenger remember)

Start with 10th overall, and just leave it at that. Better chance of picking up a faller in the top 8, and you could walk away with a top end winger and center in a good draft.

Monahan isnt being dealt for strictly futures. Again, this team is not in a re-build.
BT will insist on a player that can play now, as his departue creates a big hole in the top 6.

Francis pegged Ottawa as a trade partner too on the Fan on Friday. And CLB.
And dealing Monahan right now is most certainly selling low.
Poor season, hip surgery.

Connor Brown is not a bad winger but not a chance in hell I trade Monahan for him. That is a loss every time.

I personally don't think this is a good trade for us, but I could see something like Connor Brown + 10th overall for Monahan+ Kylington materializing.

That is the definition of the Sens selling high and the Flames selling low.
Brown was a piece included in the failed Kadri-Brodie/Janko trade from 2 years ago.

I would much rather try adding to Monahan to get a piece worth slightly more in objective value than trade Monahan at his lowest value for multiple pieces.
Monahan + for Laine would still be my ideal target at this point. Laine had a bad season and needs negotiations. Just need to figure out a +.

Interesting...as a Flame fan I want nothing to do with Laine.
Way to many red flags, plus acquisition cost, plus future salary = hard no.

Knowing nothing of him personally of course, he does seem like the type of player to take off to Europe to float around and make bank.

I agree they could probably get a better return on paper, but I'm not sure they could get a better "win-now" return.
Arvidsson and Ellis are among the best value contracts in the league.
TOR can't really count on getting exceptional value again out of:
Spezza 700k
Thornton 700k
Hyman 2.25M
Simmonds 1.5M
Bogosian 1M
Dermott 875k
Currently 12.5M for 8-9 players, including a 1B goalie. This was their best shot and they blew it. I hope they do stay the course.
