Tim Horton's. It could be 6am and there would be a lineup at the drive thru going out onto the street. Even at my college there's a Timmy Ho's in the caf, and the lineup is so long usually that it spills out into the hallway. Meanwhile, theres a coffee house on the second floor that serves the same coffee and snacks Tim's does, and its empty. EMPTY! Seriously, what unholy power causes someone to stand in line for half an hour when they could get the same coffee in 2 mins?? Its almost creepy.

Anyone seen So I Married An Axe Murderer? You know that line when Mike Myers plays the Scottish grandpa, and he goes on that rant about how he thinks KFC puts an addictive chemical in its chicken to make you crave it nightly? That could easily apply to Tim's I think, it really creeps me out.

Interesting. I had Bell for 3 years and never had a problem in my house or hardly anywhere, ever. I only last month switched to Telus(just because I wanted the LG Chocolate, and Bell didnt offer it), and I have absolutely no reception in my house. Too bad I signed a three year contract...I miss Bell already.

Store sells a TV for $2000. "cost" is $1600; which is lower than the sales guy can go. He makes $80 comission on the TV.

Cables sell for $400. Salesperson makes $100 in comission on those.

So if he discounts the TV by $300, his comission on the TV drops to $30. So he can sell you the cables and TV and make $130, or the TV by itself and make $80. The store also makes about the same amount of money from you. That is; until you return the cables. The fact of the matter is; most people don't.

What happens to the Salesperson commission on the cables when you bring them back? Does he still make $130, or does the store take back his $100?

If the store screws the Salesperson, I'm not sure I'd go this route. I've found building a relationship with one or two Salespeople at a few stores really helps save time when haggling. Between me, and those I know, we do buy quite a bit of high end electronics.

On the topic of boycotts... I too have way too many. Most of them are situational though. For instance, I'll never buy a computer or display at Future Shop, but will by PC games and DVD's there.

I wont eat at the A&W on Maclead (near Southland) or the McDonald's on 32nd and Barlow; I got food poisoning at both of them about 10 years ago.

I wont use the Registry office in Signal Hill Center - The WORST customer service I've ever had, and that was 4 or 5 years ago.

It's a similar process I hate going through when purchasing a new or used vehicle.
You just have to be a smart enough customer to exploit the system. Chances are, you aren't going to get a better deal anywhere else and there's a point where convienience of a store near to you and with actual return policies or warranties merits buying from some place like futureshop.

The money I've saved on buying from wholesale or pricey electronics from ebay etc. versus a brick & mortar store isn't worth it as I've heavily regretted most of those purchases. After the last monitor I bought on ebay blew up on me and I couldn't recoup any of the $500, I decided I wouldn't ever buy a monitor online again and would rather live with getting one in store where it's easy to get returns for a new one. Went to FS and got a 20" widescreen LG for $100 off as it was on the open-box table.

I'm the first to criticize AC, but in their defence I think I should share an experience I had with them yesterday. I mistakenly tried to board the wrong plan in Vancouver yesterday - it was entirely my fault and my flight had already left.

Instead of creating issues for me, they put me in business class on that flight since the rest of the plane was full. It seemed like an un-Air Canada thing to do but I am very grateful to have made it home and appreciate the service.

I boycott any kind of warranty I have to pay for. I just love buying a bunch of stuff at Future Shop and watching an irritating salesman trying to convince/scare me into buying it. I always say no. Makes my day. I did however in a moment of weakness buy extended warranty 1 time. It was on some furniture from the Brick where the salesgirl was a borderline supermodel. I tried to say no but was unable to.

I think his point was that there should have been a sign up. The fact that there wasn't; the Subway guy was asking him to pay a $3-4 surcharge as well as spend 10 minutes driving around to get his fast food worth $7. The Subway guy was counting on people feeling that they "had to pay" and was willing to inconvenience a lot of customers rather than take a piece of paper and spend 15 seconds making a sign.

Most places I've worked at the salesperson loses their commission. One place I used to work at- if the return was done at another store the salesperson didn't lose comission. But that was circa 1990; and the computers may not have been as smart then.

Once when selling electronics; I had a guy about ready to buy. He pulls me aside and says he knows I can discount; but don't want to without losing comission. He asked me to give him my best price that won't get me in trouble, and tell him how much comission I lost.

I get extended warranties on car stereos and portable music devices. I've used them a couple of times.

East Side Mario's in Shawnessy. Absolutely horrible. I even complained to the manager, and he told me "Sorry", and walked away.

In regards to Future Shop, here are a couple things to remember.

First, the salesperson does indeed lose his commision if the item is returned. There were a lot of days in January that I made $ -200 a day.

Second, the salesperson will always try to steer you to the higher commision item. They are trained to do it, and you shouldn't blame them for trying to make more money. Do your homework on the internet and decide which item you want to purchase before going in.

Third, the average markup for TV's and stereo's is around 20% or so. The average markup for cables is way over 100%, and the markup for the waranty is massive. Keep this in mind when haggling.

It should be noted that this is not a Future Shop thing. EVERY electronics store is the same.

Yes you have to be smart, however, i'm not interested in playing the silly games that Future Shop likes to play with it's customers. Nor do I want to have to listen to some salesperson try and upsell me something more expensive so he/she can pad her comission. That and try and force some useless extended warranty on you too. Frankly it's annoying as hell.

Olive Garden - Last time we were there, I gave the waitress a $2 tip, meal was $24 and the only time I saw her was when she brought the stuff to us. So when she saw what she was getting she went and said something to one of her co-workers, then came back to our table and threw the receipt down and walked away without saying goodbye or anything. Haven't been back since.

Futureshop - I usually go to browse around but if I have to buy something I'd rather buy it elsewhere. I find the salespeople much to pushy. Last time I was buying stuff the guy would not let up about telling me I should buy extended warranty, wiring kit, and pay for the installation at the same time I'm buying the product. I said no about 10x to him, then he started telling a co-worker that he couldn't believe me and that I'm losing out.

Bell - I think I have a 2 year contract with them for the dish but every month when I get their bill I'm annoyed. The first one was correct but every one since was not. Every month I call to get my balance because no matter when we make payments they're not on there. Tried calling one night but they were closed. It kept saying I could check my automated balance by selecting.... options. But when I did that it was a loop and then just said again that I could check my automated balance by......

Exactly what I hate too! There must be something in Future Shops training manual that says salespeople must be condesending towards customers and that they should be treated as customers who don't have clue what they are talking about.

Finally, I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees this. I chuckle whenever I see the lineup of lemmings spilling out the door.

Shane- did you know Bell changed all of our account numbers about 6 months ago?

Yep, neither did I until I called to complain that my payments weren't being processed. It's now on your bank as "Bell Canada All in One Bill" instead of "Bell ExpressVu."
